by surgeon83- 7 replies
Hi, I hate to start a thread like this, but I only have one more day left in the Newport Beach, CA area and I have yet to see a Jubaea chilensis. This is my first (and only anticipated) trip to CA and darned if I'm going to miss seeing one of those palms. Rest assured I will add pictures to this thread once I find interesting stuff (and get back home). Thanks all! -Brian

Here in Louisiana, weeds are a big problem. I was just reading about a preemergent product called Snapshot and wondering whether it was safe, we I realized that you guys would know the answers. What chemicals, pre and post emergents, have you been succesful with that have not harmed your palms and other ornamentals plants?

Hyorphobe Indica
by palman- 17 replies

Do you have one? If so, how tall is it? Is it a red form or green form? Does the red form prefer shade while the green form does not or vice versa? I'd like to know what the needs are of each form based on your personal expariences. A friend of mine planted a 7gal red form that was 2meters tall in a sunny spot and it slowly declined over a period of 2-3 months despite being watered regularly. Thanks for your input!

Phoenix theophrastii
by NCpalmqueen- 21 replies
- 1.8k views
I grew these two P.theophrastii from seed. They've been in the ground here in NC for 3 years. The top leaves are near 6' now. I am debating on whether to wrap them up for the winter like I usually do. They now have a nice girthy 6" tall trunk on them, so I'm hoping they are getting hardier. Anyone growing any mature specimens and care to share any photos or experiences?

Well, in a little suprise (in that it was not supposed to bring as much water as it did) we got rain all day yesterday. While I don't have a rain gauge, by listening to the news and checking my "open trash can", it appears I got about 2.75 inches of rain!!! (I think thats about 70 mm) Wow! Thats here on the coast of north San Diego, just south of Camp Pendleton. Down side, I found some spots where it leaked thru the stucco Some pics to follow. How much did everyone else get?

Finding a spot for Guihaia argyrata
by TikiRick- 25 replies
- 1.3k views
Matty B...you plant one and I plant one. I love competition! While PalmGuyWC was here this month, we went to the Fairchild's Palm Show and Sale....and he was kind enough to buy a Guihaia argyata, 5 gallon for me. He convinced me that it is a real unusual palm, especially one of this size. I am not that familiar with this palm, except that it is S-L-O-W and is from limestone outcroppings in China. Here's some pictures of my afternoon, attempting to find a spot for it. This spot gets full afternoon sun and since it is slow growing it will not outgrow this spot. Digging the hole...I think I can see China! Notice my crappy sandy soil. This area was pu…

2 for One on a Rainy Day
by freakypalmguy- 4 replies
I was bored with all the rain today so I decided to pot up som Butia eriospatha that had recently germinated. When I dug them out, I found that two of them were coming out of the same seed. I found this twice. Is this something that comonly occurs with palm seeds? Or just certain species? Can they be separated later when the seed has expended all it's energy?

Hedescepy canturburyana
by MattyB- 24 replies
- 1.6k views
I got a nice fat one gallon Hedescepy from Steve in SD last year. It grew great over last winter and through this spring. I potted it up to a 2 gallon in spring and I thought it was doing great. Well, it's obvious now that it's stopped growing (I marked the spear), the leaves are dying back and I'm sure it's on it's way out. Of course it could be from any number of things, but I was wondering if these might prefer to be grown out of the greenhouse. I know Phil @ Jungle Music grows his in the greenhouse and they look great. I think mine gets hotter though. Any thoughts from people on this species. Thanks.

For me the most difficult palm seeds are: Dypsis bejofo (never sprouted, 2 attempts) Dypsis tsaravoisira (one out of 20) Dypsis lastelliana (never had a sprout in 3 attempts) Voanioala gerardii Oncosperma tigillarium (2 out of 50) Attalea oleifera (after 2 years none has sprouted yet) Butia capitata (zero, third batch) Orania ravaka Astrocaryum murumuru (Oh Lord...) Most Bactris Howea forsteriana (sporadic and low germination rate) Manicaria saccifera (2 out of 30) Phytelephas macrocarpa (tough seeds, unlike Aphandra natalia) What other species are difficult for you?

Jubaea or Butia X Jubaea?
by FRITO- 4 replies
Geoff (palmbob) from CA sent me a few seeds collected in a park last summer. He collected Jubaea and BxJ. I lost track of which was which and this was the only palm that germinated. I sowed them November 06. these are the same seeds he sent (left and right): http://davesgarden.com/guides/pf/showimage/126211/ heres my seedling 7/28/07 here it is 9/14/07 It has grow steady and is healthy as can be with no special care. It germinated outdoors this summer and has been there since. any experts have an opinion? My gut tells me it JUB as the seed isnt pointy on the ends.

Had some time to kill so took some photos. Starting with, Syagrus schizophylla and a Pritchardia, not sure which one. WaianaeSteve you might be able to chime in as for the identity of the Pritchardia, its from seeds you sent to Chris in Australia. And the schizophylla is from the seeds you sent me. Second Photo is of my woto boto, sort of got knock about during last winter. Grandis, and Pseudophoenix sargentii which is showing faster growth. And of course my impossible to grow lipstick. Mike
