Brahea armata vs. sp. 'Super Silver'
by mppalms- 14 replies
- 3.1k views
I realize this is probably a matter of personal taste, and there may be disagreement, but I'm wondering what people on this board think. I've seen a palm simply labelled Brahea sp. 'Super Silver', which may be a form of Brahea nitida (?). How does it look compared with B. armata? I really like the look of B. armata and may need to include this palm in future plans, but I wanted to look into other silver-/blue-leaved palms, too. Jason

Beccariophoenix no windows & Butia capitata
by Palm Hound- 4 replies

Stupidly, I planted these two species too close to other palms last summer. Next spring I plan on transplanting them to areas where they will have more space. Are the Beccariophoenix and the B. capitata easy trans-planters?

LONG, Florida vacation - opium of the open road 1 2
by DoomsDave- 45 replies

Howdyall: After begging, pleading, threatening, etc. I have been granted 28 days of vacation time from next Monday to January 6 (yeah yeah, includes weekends). I'm going to do it slow, like a boat to China. I'll take Greyhound, Trailways, Amtrack etc., and do without a car as much as possible. If something's interesting before I get to Florida, I'll gawk at it. Maybe hang a day or two in Cajun Louisiana. N'Orleans. I DON'T want to see Disney World, Busch Gardens, etc etc! Try to get Fairchild, Key West, Fort Myers, I'm open to suggestions. Approximately from Dec. 12 to Jan 4 more or less. I've got an uncle in Hommossassa Springs, nort…

I had the camera out taking pics of my Del Mar Coconut so I thought I would take a few of my garden. This one I'm really excited about. It's my biggest Archontophoenix Purpurea and spathe. This Purpurea is differant from others that I have planted in that it has almost no petiole ala Rhopalostylis Sapida and is way more robust. Anyhows I'm hoping for seed. The leafbase that came off was almost chest high. Steve

Record Germination Times

Hi all, I just received a packet of seeds filled with Wodyetia bifurcata and planted them on Monday evening of this week. While I was doing (near) daily inspection I noticed a root! This has to be one of my records. 3 days at about 85F. What are some of your record germinations short of receiving pre-germinated seeds? We especially want to here from nursureymen. Bet that have some pretty good stories. Mike F

Satranala decussilvae

Is anyone growing Satranala decussilvae, the Forest Bismarckia from Madagascar? I got some seeds awhile back from RPS and 4 have germinated and put up their first leaf. I potted them up today in deep pots. Several other seeds were begining to set out a sinker root. I am curious if they can take full sun as a juvenile. Also, any info on cold hardiness?

Plant/pot shelf source (from Lowes)
by ThunderSRQ- 4 replies

I was wondering if there are any other good options for outdoor (plastic) plant shelves -- I have been looking around and, so far, the only type I've found are made by US Fence (it's their "Powershelf" merchandising system -- I saw them in use at the Lowes garden center and contacted the manufacturer but there's no distributor anywhere near me). Although the type I found do look very good (very sturdy black plastic grid and lots of sizes/configurations), I would have to order them directly from Ohio and the shipping cost adds about 30% to the cost for what I want. Anyone else have a better/closer/retail source for good, quality plant/pot shelves? (and, if anyone wan…

Since I've mentioned the most difficult seeds in another thread, here are the best and most reliable palm seeds I've germinated in the past: Carpentaria acuminata (100%) Phoenix canariensis, reclinata, dactylifera, etc.(The only difficult Phoenix for me was paludosa) Syagrus (all species except lilliputiana and microphylla) Gaussia maya Most Livistonas Mauritia flexuosa Wallichia disticha (100%) Chambeyronia macrocarpa Salacca zalacca most Ptychosperma, except propiquum(?) Cyphophoenix Sommieria most Chamaedoreas (except metallica, stolonifera and deckeriana) Washies Corypha umbraculifera (C. utan seems to be difficult for me). Euterpe spp. Sabal spp. …

Large ohi'a tree vs. palms
by bgl- 37 replies
- 1.4k views
Typically, the tradewinds here (95% of the time) are very pleasant and gentle, and windy conditions are extremely unusual. About once a year we have very strong gusty winds for several days. Last time was in late January 2007, and two large Ohi'a (Metrosideros polymorpha) trees fell down. One of them landed right smack on top of a Dypsis sp. bejofa and I posted photos at that time of the damage. To my surprise, the Dypsis survived and is doing just fine now. For the last several days, the entire state of Hawaii has experienced strong gusty winds with plenty of rain, more so in certain areas. When I walked around our garden this morning I couldn't believe my eyes: a very …

Pinanga dicksonii seedlings
by Tyrone- 14 replies

I just potted up these little Pinanga dicksonii seedlings the other day and thought how gorgeous they looked so I had to take some pics and show everyone. I grew these from seed and they've grown quite fast. These are just under 10 months old grown in my humidi crib fish tank thingy. P dicksonii comes from India and is meant to be quite cool tolerant for a Pinanga. I'll find out if they really are. They seem much faster than coronata. I just love all that cool Pinanga mottling.

Germination Question
by gavilan1- 3 replies
I followed suggestions provided by several members posted on this board, such as soaking seeds for 15 or so minutes in mild bleach solution, then for 3 days in plain water, changing water every day, then into the moist peat moss (hand wrung after soaking), with a light spraying of Daconil onto the peat. Close the lid on the Glad container, then sit it on the germination mat at 75 degrees F forever. The only thing that I didn't do, as I wasn't sure that it mattered, was to cover the Glad containers to keep them in the dark. In any case, I set out 10 H. indica, 10 D. orange crush, 10 L. grandis, 10 D. lanceolata, and NADA. I've read that others have already sprouted the…

Triming Canary Island Date Palms
by Ashton- 12 replies
- 2.8k views
A friend has a 25-30 ft. CIDP in his front yard. For many years the tree retained short leaf bases. Recently about ten feet of trunk started losing the leaf bases and now clean trunk is showing. I suggested that he remove the remaining leaf bases to give it a cleaner look. He is willing to buy a new set of tools so that whoever trims the tree will not infect it with Fusarium. Do the trimmers use chain saws for such a job, or is there a special tool that does an even better job? Also, does anyone know of a reputable tree service company in the southbay area of Los Angeles? Thanks for all thoughts. Ashton
