Dypsis Saintelucei
by fisherman1- 12 replies
- 1.7k views
A while back I picked up two Dypsis Saintelucei. I had them in pots outside and when it got cold they really took a hit. One died and I moved the other inside where it is doing real good. This is a beautiful palm in my opinion. I recently picked up several small palms and all are doing well except for my two new Saintelucei. The weather has been good and they are all in shade. The Saintelucei are very finikey for me. I have looked around and I can not seem to find out very much about this palm. Is anyone having success with this palm in So. Cal. Thanks F1

Palm Mycorrhizal associations
by Kailua_Krish- 10 replies
- 1.3k views
I was thinking in my botany class about mycorrhizal associations and how they often help plants perform better in the environment. After class I researched it and found a couple of articles showing how these associations significantly improved the health and production of Phoenix dactylifera in middle east palm groves and another on a tropical mexican species of palm. The articles also mentioned that it has been suggested that these associations may also improve disease resistance. I was wondering if anyone ever intentionally infects palm seedling roots with this fungus and if so how are the growth rates impacted. I'm guessing that when planted in ground they get infected…

Palm Growth Rates
by PalmGuyWC- 13 replies
- 1.7k views
Like Wal, I'm conducting a little experiment of my own. After 5 days of blistering heat, the heat wave is subsiding and my low this morning was 60 F (15C), which is about normal for this time of the year. Last evening, I marked 3 different palms with a felt pin. Rather than just puting a line across the emerging frond and the nearest petiole, I drove a thin bamboo stake in the ground next to the palm and put the mark on the emerging frond at the top of the bamboo stake. I think this is a more accurate way to determine growth rate since a nearby petiole could be growing also. I'm trying to determine if palms grow more at night than they do during the day. The 3 palms I…

Palms that stand out.
by cfkingfish- 26 replies
- 2.3k views
In our communities there are palms we see that even if they are common, they stand out as markers on the road or path. Here are a few examples: -The Sabal "Lisa" off Luckett Road on I-75 in Fort Myers. -The Phoenix reclinata hybrid that is hanging on to dear life next to the guardrail on Krome Ave between 8th and 88th St. where everyone goes paintballing. It has been there as long as I can remember. -There is a Mule near the intersection of SW104th St and Red Rd (57th Ave) near Fairchild that is taller than the coconuts surrounding it.....it blends in well, did anyone know about this? Anyone have palm markers they'd like to share?

Project Foxtrot
by Walter John- 8 replies
- 1.1k views
What is "Project Foxtrot" ? It is a study of undetermined (claimed) foxtail hybrids to determine growth speed, and hopefully discover exactly what species are on board. To assist and to cross examine, true Wodyetia and Veitchia palms are part of this study. What is known about these seedlings ? It is known that the source of supply considers one batch of seedlings foxtail and Veitchia arecina hybrids and another batch foxtail and Adonidia hybrids. How long will the project take ? Approx. 2 years Will you seek funding for this project ? No, but all donations and bribes greatfully received. That's all for now folks, as winter is coming on here, not likely t…

Pseudophoenix sargentii...my first one
by pg6922- 28 replies
- 2.1k views
Howdy Yall, Since I got the palm bug, I have not looked back and I see no sign of slowing down in the foreseeable futures...i guess there are worse things to spend my money and time on. 2 months ago, I would have thought this was just a nice palm, and in fact had never even heard of it. But after learning how slow they grow and the fact they are Florida natives, makes me appreciate the specimen I have even more. I was very blessed to receive this as a gift from Jerry Pottenger Sr. of Pottenger's nursury in Fort Myers,Fl. I thought it deserved front in center in my yard, so that others can enjoy it too. I look forward to driving home and seeing it every day.…

A remarkable palm find in Madagascar?
by rafiki- 24 replies
As readers may know by now, Peter Balasky, Guy Rafamantanantsoa, Pierrot Rahajanarina and myself were in Madagascar during the month of April. Each year we target specific forested areas and pick selected palm species to try to find and photograph. This year Dypsis furcata and Dypsis lanuginosa...two palm species not seen for many years...were our objective in several small forests in the south east of the country. Imagine the electric shock when Pierrot yelled out...what is this...what is this? We all rushed over and stood in awe! Our guides did not believe that the palm in sight was a palm! Dypsis lanuginosa is represented by a single herbarium specimen in Paris an…

Quiz Question
by Dypsisdean- 2 replies

Anyone know what this might be. I was asked this on Palmpedia "We are seeking the name of a palm tree that grows in India plus other Asian countries. The trunk fiber of the palm tree, when dried they look like a thick spaghetti and about 1 to 2" long. These fibers when exposed to a water mixture absorb and expand like a sponge. Can anyone tell us which palm or palms match this characteristic?"

Looking for a driver

I'm not sure this is the appropriate location for this post so forgive me if so, but I'm looking for someone who could pull a 12ft trailer full of Jubaeas from Escondido Ca. to East Texas. I would rent the trailer, pay expenses, and a daily wage. I need this done asap. I could put you up on my 26 acre facility or you could drive on to central Texas and stay in our cabin on the Blanco river in the hill country of Texas as part of a vacation. If interested please email me at davidrglover@aol.com or respond on the forum. Thanks

I saw the video of how NOT to move a canary island date palm with a pickup truck I plan on transplanting a few palms a sagos. say small sables with 8ft -10 or so of trunk and 3 ft trunk sagos. not 25ft 30 yr old monsters. the planned operation: have sharp shovel and ropes. trim palm leaves (hurricane cut or whatever) dig palm, then pull out of hole with truck or hand winch place onto some type of 'sled' - plywood or sheet/tarp etc my truck bed is a couple feet from the ground so what I used to do to load a riding lawn mower in was to backup the rear two tires of my truck into a gentle sloping swale or ditch with the tailgate down and park just as the tailgate…

Hey guys, Im considering ordering some palm seeds from Europalms and alas, with the dollar the way it is it would be an expensive prospective for me. Be that as it may I still am planning on doing it but I was a little concerned about shipping into the US and also I have searched the forums and web without getting a tremendous amount back on them. What I have read is good but just wanted to check and see what y'all thought about both the company and the difficulties of shipping into the US. Thanks for all your help. Krishna

Coconut Palms at EPCOT
by Eric in Orlando- 15 replies

I was out at EPCOT today, their Flower and Garden Festival is going on until June 1st. I was suprised as they have planted quite a few coconut palms in several areas, including the front entrance. The theme this years is beach/fun in the sun kind of thing. The ones at the front had topiaries of Mickey and Minnie at the beach and Goofy surfing. They are all the 'Golden Malayan'. Wonder if they will leave them in.
