How palm rich is Thailand? Going through the shadehouse today I noticed that my Kerriodoxa elegans is filling out pretty nicely. What are some of the endemic palms of Thailand?

Who knows this palm?
by mpiodi- 38 replies

Can somebody help me identifying this palm? The fans are divided in about 20 segments (see pic), the petioles are strongly serrated as also seen in a detail pic. The petioles are covered with a fine white-silvery powder which can be removed with the fingers. The current size of the plant is about 1,5m. (Sorry if I am not using the perfect technical terms. I hope you understand me) Mpiodi

Happy -in ground- palm leaves at my house!
by BS Man about Palms- 23 replies

Well, many of you know my ratio of "planted" to "potted" (container) palms is extremely lopsided. At the beginning of this year, I had 10 palms in the ground. (After almost 3 years of collecting) I just counted 26 in the ground recently. Heres some leaves that have opened recently on my "planted" palms. (No, I'm not counting my rooted in pots as planted ) Just for Kris, these are "unthumbnailed" Good old Chambeyronia first up.

Hi, I am new to this forum. I am German (so not a native English speaker!), living since 15 years in Kinshasa, Democratic Republic of Congo and palm fan since my arrival in Africa. I collected palm seeds during trips in Africa, having meanwhile a nice collection but with difficulties to identify a lot of them. Therefore I am hoping to get help in this forum in this regard. I am also frequenting a German palm forum but the problems discussed there are mainly about growing palms in colder regions. Some of my already identified species: Elais guineensis, Cocos nucifera (of course), Caryota mitis, Areca catechu, Borassus, Syagrus romanzoffiana, Adonidia merrillii, Crysal…

Multi growing points on palms
by Walter John- 3 replies
Hello dear listeners, We have seen on previous occasions where certain palms may form another growing point below the primary crown point and go on a multi trunk formation. I have Dypsis lutescens and baronii doing this, no big deal, we all see this from time to time. I have mentioned before on the board about one of my Dypsis pembana with secondary growing point, this time I will show you clearer pictures of it. What has really blown me away though is my Ravenea glauca doing the same thing, not one secondary point but two. I was alerted to this unusual occurrence on noticing a flexible (soft ) palm spear lying across the top of my african cycad. Let's go to the vid…

Indoor palm questions
by newtothis- 5 replies
My new addiction has moved indoors and we picked up a 6' Ravenea rivularis at Lowes for $12. I was reading davesgarden and half users report its a great indoor palm and the other half state it dies after 2 years inside, gets infested by mites, and is much better outside. The tag on the plant reads "magnificent palm for indoor feature" if placed within 6 feet of a window. Half of reports state to never let it dry out between watering and others report let the first 2" dry then water. By the way today they had a hyophorbe bottle, around 5' tall, for almost $200, I wanted it sooo bad but sounded kinda steep.

Dypsis leptocheilos
by Walt- 1 follower

The first 2-3 years I had this palm the fronds/leaves looked great. Then it seemed to decline, where the leaves on all but the 3-4 newest fronds would turn brown and die, looking very raggedy. I have a 2nd D. leptocheilos that is just now starting to show a trunk and it's leaves are fine, except for the oldest, lowermost frond. Is this typical for the species? I'm starting to get annoyed with this condition. I started to give this palm some extra potassium, in hopes that might help. Note the second to top right-hand frond, at the very end. The leaves are starting to turn brown. I feed this palm with Lesco 13-3-13-4.5, which is the best I can get at my local Ho…

If You had this Carribean acre ....
by Jon Stolson- 28 replies
- 2.6k views
I just finished building 4 new cottages 500 yards from the beach on the Carribean island of Nevis. Ran out of $$ for landscaping. But I do have a great groundskeeper, and I plan to travel there twice a year. (Dec and May) Please look at these three pictures, experts. There are about 12 foxtails (1 ft) random along winding sidewalk ... and two mahogony shade trees (2 ft) in middle of the acre... plus 4 traveler palms near cottages. What would you do ....remember, I can only take seeds and seedlings. And I have, hopefully, 25 years to enjoy this vacation paradise. Megga thanks for any inputs as I know how to spell "palm trees" but beyond that, my palm tre…

Trimming your Phoenix Canariensis
by iamjv- 29 replies
- 15.3k views
This thread is meant to highlight how I go about trimming my Phoenix Canariensis (CIPD), while attempting to get that Pineapple look. The first step that I take in trimming up my CIPD is to trim away the lower hanging fronds. I typically cut away enough to give the fronds a “fountain look”, I think this helps in getting that pineapple look that most people seems to like. From the shot below I'd trim away two or three rows of fronds, reevaluating the look as I go along.

Unusual Germination Results
by Neofolis- 5 replies

I checked the seeds from my most recent RPS order yesterday. There were 7 species in total. Calyptrocalyx leptostachys, Chamaedorea tuerckheimii (Veracruz), Iguanura elegans, Licuala mattanensis (Mapu), Pinanga aristata, Pinanga sp. (Blue Fruit) and Rhopaloblaste singaporensis. I only ordered ten of each seed, although invariably I recieve 11 or 12 of some species. I separated each species into two or three groups and planted at least one group or each in baggies and one in tupperware containers, in case they prefer a particular method. Of the species ordered, all were on the new additions list other than Rhopaloblaste singaporensis. So far, one baggy and one…

King palm seedling seeding?
by John Case- 4 replies

All, Take a close look at these photos. This is a rescue palm I picked up and the end of a local plant sale in May. Since then, it has put up a seed stalk from underground (look at the left side of the photos) and is now spiking another (see right). With so few fronds, shoul I jusr leave it and see what happens (I paid nothing for this plant) or cut off the spikes in order to conserve energy to grow leaves. The fate of this tree is in your hands.

Howdy Yall, I have been wanting one of these for a while and to my surprise they had 2 of them at HD today. I'm so glad Morningstar Nursery is getting these on the market. I want 2 more to add a trio in the back yard. I think I will wait till after hurricane Ike passes before I plant it though. How many years before its gets a trunk? PG These are the ones 5 minutes from my house at Cape Harbor that put them on my short list.

Hi all, I am new to this forum, but I have been reading for awhile and I am excited about finally being a registered member. The experience that the members contribute to this site is priceless and this is such a valuable resource! I live in Vista CA and have a standard track home lot (< ¼ acre) with about 30 species of palms. I am going for a “lush look” so I am really crowding things in and may end up removing some bigger trees (non-palm) as I go along. Species in the ground: Archontophoenix cunninghamiana 5 ea. Archontophoenix purpurea 2 ea. Arenga engleri 1 ea. Chamaedorea radicalis 1 ea. Chamaedorea seifrizii 1 ea. Dypsis baronii 1 ea. Dypsis d…

Possums eating palms
by tim_brissy_13- 31 replies
- 9.7k views
Throughout last winter I found many of my rare palms were having fronds eaten off, or in some cases for seedlings, the entire palm was eaten. Not knowing what was doing this, I placed some rat poison in the area with no effect. This winter the damage is continuing, and I am 99% sure it is a possum (or 2 or 3) which is eating my palms. Does anyone have any successful ways of catching or stopping them damaging my palms? It (or they?) also have excellent taste in palms (unfortunately for me), going after Dypsis prestoniana (my first one and its replacement this year), Dypsis 'ovobontsira', Dypsis 'canaliculata', some different Ceroxylons, Caryota himalayana and a few…

Most of the day was spent attending to Mom's more pressing needs. Cel cleaned the yard removed water from the leaks inside, while I nailed tarps onto the roof. But,,,,,,, When I got home today, there was a few minutes to begin the righting. As usual it pays to be prepared. I had purchased a 300' roll of webbing a few months back from Forestry Supply. This stuff is great from fastening plants and much easier on them than using a rope. My only regret is not purchasing the 3000' roll. Here is subject 1 before and after

Little Bismarkia
by amazondk- 10 replies
Bismarkia palms are quite expensive here in Manaus. They bring them mostly by truck from São Paulo and normally only sell larger ones for high prices. I was at my favorite plant shop today and he had some smaller ones for 90 Reais, about 60 USD. This is still not cheap, but larger ones are 10 times this price. I have a place I want to put one on my Bela Vista lot in Paricatuba on the other side of the Negro River. So, I broke down and bought it. I am sure it will grow fast once established. The rainy season comes in a few months and I am assembling things to get in the ground. Here is the little gem as it was getting ready to go out the door. And, when i…
