How do you appreciate palms?
by kylecawazafla- 1 follower

Out of the many ways to enjoy palms, can anyone select their favorite way to enjoy them? I have various favorite ways of enjoying palms. I love seeing them cultivated in climates where you would not expect to see them, such as a coconut in california or trachycarpus in alaska. An equal pleasure extracted from palm trees for me is seeing them in their habitat growing how they're supposed to grow. Unfortunately mainly tropical palms spike my interest, so I'm void of that here in North Central Florida, but it's still exciting on this forum seeing photos of Hydriastele ramsayi, Archontophoenix myolensis, Verschaffeltia, etc... So what about you?? Do you enjoy seeing them in …

I recently purchased a Hookeri X Macrocarpa off of ebay. I am pretty sure the seeds came from Jeff Marcus. The color looks different than the regular Hookeri. Any one have a larger one out there and any thoughts. Here they are for comparison. Aaron

Saltwater Tolerance
by JimR- 6 replies

In Rockport, we were very lucky to miss the brunt of Ike. All we got was some high water (about 5 ft. above normal high tide). Our thoughts go out to everyone who (or whose family) was in Ike's path. However, the high water means that a large Queen palm (c. 10 ft. of trunk) and several V. arecinas (1 with c. 10 ft. of trunk and 3 with <1 ft. of trunk) were standing in saltwater for 36 to 48 hours. There are no signs of damage yet. How serious is this for them and is there anything I can do?

Bringing plants indoors
by newtothis- 9 replies

This is for people without greenhouses.. So this cool front has me wondering what I'm supposed to do. I have a bunch of seedlings, CIDP, c.macrocarpa, a.myolensis. Only the CIDP is cold hardy but they are all seedlings. Can I wait until it's supposed to drop below 30f to bring everything in or can they stay out when its 40f?? Do you keep them in all winter or move them back out on days when its over 30f? If they stay in all winter are they next to a window or is a garage ok? How do I give them light during this, can I just open the garage a few hours 2 or 3 days a week? Do I water less when they are in?Anything else I should know?

Community pots and transplanting
by newtothis- 8 replies
- 3.2k views
Some might remember I had 30something CIDP seeds germinate in a community pot. I let the first leaf grow to 9" or so then moved them to their own 3g pots about a month ago. I watched the fully open nicely green leafs shrivel up, apparently in transplant shock, and SOME are just now looking normal again. So my observation, it seems, you loose a couple months of growth bare rooting and repotting. Well when you are "newtothis" and you go out every day to look for growth its like waiting for water to boil. So is it better to start them out in their own pots to avoid this?

x Wodveitchia cool-hardiness
by mnorell- 1 follower

Does anyone have any experience with the cool-hardiness (as opposed to, or in addition to, absolute cold-hardiness) of x Wodveitchia? I've purchased a group of small plants from a source in Florida, he says they came from a reliable industry friend there, and believes they are Wodyetia x Veitchia arecina (of course if the pollen-parent is V. joannis I may be in for a sore disappointment on the hardiness front). I'm planning on planting at least one of these out for a winter-brutality test this year while the others put on some size in the safety of the greenhouse. Though I've seen a number of reports that these are hardier than either parent, and in once case survived …

Pushing the envelope
by John Case- 35 replies

I have jusr finished putting in three planters on the east side of my home. This side gets no wind (as a rule) and little sun in any season, no more than 2-3 hours per day. It is also the warmest side of the home in the winter. I am ready to take a chance and push the zones. According to USDA I am zone 9b (although we are unlike Florida in every way that I can imagine), according to Sunset Zone 14 (although we are sometimes 15, 17, or 9). I am looking for suggestions to put one more zone to the test, Zone 10a (oh, the horror!) I am in need of 4 or 5 of the best zone pushers that you can come up with. Dick, if you are reading this, you are familiar with the Greate…

Help With Variant #2 ID, Brahea Supersilver???
by palmaddict- 9 replies
IPS, Home Depot was selling Brahea armata's for $15 each and they were a good size and color. They came in three gallon size. I have a dirt path through an arid garden that I wanted to line with Brahea armata. It is about 100 feet long so I ended up purchasing nine of the palms. To find nine of them I ended up going to three different Home Depots. The last Home Depot I went to had about 12 of the Brahea armata. As I looked through these 12 palms I noticed that about 4 of them had a very different look to them. The other 8 are what I have come to expect from Brahea armataa but the others look different. In the following photos variant 1 is Brahea armata and vari…

Question about flowering/fruiting?
by Neofolis- 4 replies
OK, it's a very novice question, but on the plus side should be easy to answer. My Chamaedorea cataractarum has flowered a few times and I was told, when it first flowered, that it was a female. Not having a male plant, I was quite used to seeing flowers and never expecting anything else. This time, however, it has set seed, which I assumed it wouldn't do without anything to pollinate it. Does this mean that a female will still produce fruit without a male, but the seeds will not be viable or has it been pollinated by one of my other Cham's? I only have microspadix and radicalis, both of which have flowered, but they also look like females and I don't think they are …
