Palm landscape design

I find it difficult planning and designing my front yard to make it look appealing from the road and somewhat private from my front porch. my house is small and most cold hardy palms are grow large(washy butia, CIDP), so finding the right scale is also a concern... Is there any good books out there that walk you through this? Here is a crude areial view of my front yard. what im concerned with is the 3 sided curved bed that goes around my grass in the middle. I currently have planted 2 sabal 'lisas' , Butia and a mature sago, and recently a queen palm. its basically a postage stamp font yard and Ive have created the curved beds that wrap it all together. Do I…

Blue metal
by Tyrone- 22 replies

I was talking to a palm nurseryman today, and he was telling me of some Dypsis decaryi that he bought from another wholesale nursery which had a blue metal style rock near the bottom of the pot. Reportedly this substance absorbs the fertiliser and releases it later over time. He reported that these D decaryi's went from 60cm high to 2.5m high in 2 years and were really bulky whereas his triangles from another supplier had much less growth. The wholesale nursery that he bought these triangles from used a fertigation system and watered them 5 times a day. So basically this rock substance released fertiliser to the plant long after the fertigation had stopped. Has anyone hea…

I was just wondering if I could tap into the collective wisdom of the forum to find out what the best ways exist to growing, fat, healthy sunhardened Archontophoenix alexandrae, and Archontophoenix cunninghamiana. I have my own thoughts, but was wondering if there are little tricks etc to boost strong robust growth in fullsun. Any ideas???? I'm trying to grow big 100litre bag specimens. Best regards Tyrone

I was just wondering if I could tap into the collective wisdom of the forum regarding how one grows the fastest, fattest, strongest sun hardened Wodyetia bifurcata's. Are there any little tricks etc? I have my own thoughts on the subject, but I was just wondering what others would do, or have done to create, the fattest, healthiest robust sungrown foxtails around. Any ideas???? I'm hoping to create large 100litre bag specimens. Best regards Tyrone

New Growth Point Question
by gavilan1- 4 replies
OK, so this may well sound like a newbie question - my apologies in advance here so please save snarkiness for a better opportunity. I have a solitary D. lutescens that is beginning to trunk, and a few weeks ago, a lump appeared under a sheath of the oldest frond. I thought that the palm might have been trying to throw a first inflorescence. I removed a portion of the leaf sheath to expose the lump. It looked like it might be a very underdeveloped spathe, so I let it be. A couple of days ago, it looked like this: Here is a close-up view (sorry about the lighting): Did I just lose my solitary golden cane? I know that these sucker, but does this qualify …

Planting Livistona in Clustered Pairs
by rsproule- 14 replies

Does anyone know if it's a good idea to plant Livistona decipiens in a clustered pair? When King palms are planted in a cluster they look great since the trunks will gracefully curve away from each other. Other species, such as Queen palms, don’t work well in clusters since they often grow straight up and crowd each other out. Also, if you do plant Livistona decipiens in a clustered pair how should it be done? I was thinking of putting them in the same hole tilted at 45 degrees angles in opposite directions. Thanks Ryan

Lemurophoenix halluxii died!
by Paul The Palm Doctor!- 11 replies

Everyone said: "don't let it ever dry out...and I didn't!" It got to the fourth leaf, and plum rotted out of me! Damn! Next time, I'm trying a seedling from any source that sells 'em! I had such great hopes; it survived two years of hurricanes and winters...and water did it in! I never would have suspected that as the "killing factor!" Never in a hundred yeras...but it was! Shucks! Paul

Was thinking (again) if the magic genie said I could have the knowledge of the greatest palm expert, who would I pick. I know there are different fields/areas. Please don't get upset if you are not picked, but I am sure there are so many experts. Who do you think is the wisest or (could be different) who's wisdom would you want?

Recent plantings

I have been building my house for the last couple of years (BS, you have company) and I have been putting off planting for quite a while. All the structural work is done, but the finishing is taking a while. My lot is very, very small, (5600 sq feet) so I have to pick and choose which of my palms I plant. And I have quite a few cycads too. I am trying to catch the last months of our rainy season. Here are a couple of pictures. Planted yesterday. Wallicha disticha.

Commercial compost and repotting
by John in Andalucia- 4 replies
Thus far in my horticultural endeavor, I have resorted to buying large sacks of two different types of compost at 7 Euros for 80L (21 gal for $9.57). Now my seedlings have grown, the real work is looming upon me, because as I near the end of my first year as a nurseryman, I currently have over 4000 seedlings of 100 different species, and just over half of these will need to be in 1 gallon pots some time soon. To those who grow on a commercial scale, I would like to know if you make your own potting mix, or alternatively, is it delivered wholesale by the truckload? (I will ask at my local garden center, but it's always more interesting to ask here first.) Secondly, as a mo…

Mapu progeny

Went out this morning and had a nice surprise... This is the first germination of my seeding plant! That is really a cool thing... Almost every flower spike I have had has aborted so this is extra exciting news! I really want to give a good soil mixture that wont waterlog this plant... meaning mostly inorganic and plenty of air exchange... Here's a pic of what I usually use... You can see the mapu's yellow out quite a bit and aren't happy, I think my mix isn't freely draining enough. When I pot up my new seedling I want to use a very free draining mix, similar to orchid or cactus mix... Here's a couple seedling I have that are much happier... I didn't …

Palm Visual
by John in Andalucia- 0 replies
An effective technique for visualizing a mature palm on your property, can be achieved through photo editing. For those of us that know how, this is a very simple technique. In reply to a request by one member for a visual like the one below, I'm hoping that those with computer skills, will be able to help out. Chamaedorea cataractarium All you have to do is post two photos; one of the palm you would like to see in years to come, and another of where you will ideally plant it. With luck, a helpful member will do the rendering for you and post the results. Please also discuss your choice of palm, as this is only intended as a serious landscape proposal.

Zone pushing, Act 2
by John Case- 24 replies
- 1.8k views
All, I have begun my zone pushing extravaganza because I could not pass this up. Here are my issues 1) I have decided to plant it on the Southeast corner of the home. It gets morning sun, but not afternoon. It is for the most part, shielded from the prevailing wind. It will get little overhead cover, unless I plant something taller, which I cna but my neighbor may have some issues with a large tropical bamboo encroaching into his front yard landscape. 2) Plant it now or later? It looks like it can stay in the can for some time. If it gets too cold this year (I do not expect it to for two reasons a) we have already had our 10 year freeze 2 years ago and I am c…

Public Plantings: Carlsbad

If you are driving around Carlsbad, and you see great public landscaping, chances are our very own Gonzer had something to do with it. Especially if it includes large boulders and travelers palms. This thread will cover as many of these mini-paradises as I can find. This first planting is near where Carlsbad Blvd splits off and forms State Street. Here it is as you approach from the south, and from the north.

I have had this Licuala in the ground for 5 years now. Though it's slow here, I like the way it's growing. Does anyone else grow this one? I would love to see a photograph of a more mature specimen. The trunk shown in the photo belongs to a Copernicia which helps to provide shade. Aloha,

I have had a big royal palm for years that had a bad spot in the trunk. I pulled it out today and harvested the heart and made a salad. I will post some pix here so Y'all can see what it looks like inside the crown of a royal. The first pic represents about half of the edible potion.
