Recently I have looked at 2 landscape jobs I did at least 15-18 years ago. Both jobs have caryota urens which have not flowered. A friend of mine had one flower within 5 years. I was once told 20 years min. Dypsis in Hawaii are flowering 5 years. Global warming?

Self-Decapitating Two-header D. decipiens
by DoomsDave- 11 replies
- 1.1k views
Howdyall: I had a big old D. decipiens I'd planted from a 32-galloner way back when men, women, and babies were all men, and it had two heads. Now it only has one, and it's starting to grow. Hmmm.

Queens don't make good canopy
by DoomsDave- 10 replies

Howdyall: Joe's earlier post in which he wonders about some queens near his cool pool . . . . If you just love 'em, keep 'em. If you want other, rarer things in the same space, I don't think they'll coexist well. Here they are, don't ya love 'em madly . . . . About three years from fifteen gallon pots. Seriously.

Well, I never really found out what this one really is but I believe it to be the cross of the teddy and triangle. Another good grower. She's getting ready to trunk. Last year present..and my photography skills continue to decline!

I've been thinking of doing this thread for so long it feels like Deja Vu. If I'm repeating myself "somebody stop me!". The Oceanside Civic Center is full of surprises. I find something new every time I'm there. First up, a group of 6 Rhopies (I'm not showing them all).

Anyone growing Areca macrocarpa?
by junglegalfla- 1 follower

Anyone growing Areca macrocarpa and can you tell me more about this palm? I've found very limited info and pics online. I have a very robust seedling. It's been one of my best growers. Always shooting out fronds and fattening up much quicker than most. It even handled the winter outside and didn't miss a beat. In my opinion, the limey coloration on it makes it an attractive palm too. The color reminds me of the crown shaft of a A. tuckeri. I will post a pic soon. I need to get a memory stick to upload my camera. In the meantime, any additional info or pics would be greatly appreciated! Thanks, Bren

Can anyone ID this palm? It's in my yard (Miami area) and the landlord (who planted it and is a plant guy) didn't know what it is. Sorry about the shots, but it is in a rather crowded location. Thanks in advance.

Adonidia merrillii
by AJQ- 3 replies
I have what I think are some Adonidia merrillii ( possibly some other veitchia though as seeds were mixed up.) With the fronds just going pinate. Unfortunately they don't look too good and are starting to curl up and discolour. Is this under watering or over watering or something else? I water healthily once a week during summer but have reduced the amount now but still water once a week. They have been good steady growers untill now and the pinate fronds do not look half as big as when they were strap leaves. Any Ideas guys and girls? Regards Andy.

Should I go with a coconut?
by Derekjp- 5 replies

I'm a property manager and I've got the oportunity to plant a nice palm tree at a commercial building. I moved to Pinellas County Florida this year and I'm still renting, so I don't have a place to plant anything of my own YET! This will change early next year. What I basically wanted to know is how safe is it really to plant cocos nucifera in Pinellas County? I see them all over here... some are healthy others are dead or on their way. What about LY? Is it here? Will it be here later? If it was my money I would plant it anyway because I love coconut palms, but it's not so I don't want to waste someone elses. The site is in north st pete around 1/2-1 mile…

Royals Gone Wild

I noticed many wild Royals are generated in Schmelting Pods.A Schmelting Pod occurs on properties owned by late Octogenerians, who gave up gardening supervision a decade before. This is far from lost on the Gardeners, who enjoy month long rummy bender's.During this time Schfelera,Ficus and Royals establish positions. This leads to the patented "Mow around Technique",which guarantees the "Schmelting Pod". A larger example of the "Schmelting Pod" is seen in this shot: Closer view: Some Juvenile Delinquents talking trassh to some Ixhora Shrubs:

Royals Gone Wild

Roystonea(Royals)may well be the most Majestic Species on Earth.Royals promulgate prolifically throughout South Florida like the Native Beasts they are.If this is the case, you would expect to see some evidence of this natural proliferation. One day,I opened my eyes and looked around to see what I could see. "Say hello to my little friend" Another a little larger hiding in the Shrubs. I noticed that some of the kindegarten kids dig fences. Pelagodoxa henryana

I have six of these wonderful palm seeds and the first has just popped. What size tap root can I expect? I have my Bizzies in 18" tubes and wondered if the same would do. Any advice on cultivating P. henryana from seed would be most welcome, as I haven't grown this palm before.

Shake, shake, shake...
by ThunderSRQ- 2 replies

This may be a very basic question but I figured I would go ahead and ask just so I can have the input for my potting procedure. When I pot up plants, I've noticed that, after thoroughly soaking the soil with water to get it settled in well around the new plant's roots, if I shake the pot, almost without exception the soil settles another inch or so. Is this recommended (in order to best eliminate all air pockets) or does this possibly create too much soil density? Thanks... Tim

After finishing the Car Port Terrace, which by the way has NO Car Port, I began clearing and planting the area below it. There is a road that leads to the back of my 2 acres and this is the right side of that road. It's a project just beginning. Here is a link to a few days progress. Kou Tree Right Wai`anae Steve

I planted two Sabal Minors this past April. One plant is looking well; however, the other does not look so healthy. The spear has brown areas and has not grown out like the other. I am posting pictures of the healthy Sabal Minor and the one that has brown spots. I would appreciate any suggestions.

Container Ranch goes "garden style" 1 2 3

BS MAN goes "garden style" with the Container Ranch. (Sorry, the Ranch Hands got their hair wet yesterday and went home early, they called in sick this morning claiming "We can't do a thing with it") After a lot of actually fun work, I got the front to look better. I still have a LONG way to go, but I wanted to get some stuff moving/growing. HERE'S MY EVENTUAL GOAL (at least for So Cal) OK- I'll be uploading so it may take a bit, but it will be a combo of thumbnails and photobucket. Click on the thumbs for bigger views. May be several minutes between posts as I look for various places I put them.

SOME MISCELLANEOUS QUESTIONS
by PalmGuyWC- 4 replies

Does anyone grow Allagoptera leucocalyx and does anyone have a mature one that is fruiting? I obtained a small strap leafed one this summer and it's grown at a relatively fast rate. I also have a larger Allagoptera arenaria and it's hardly grown at all this summer. They are both in containers. I've heard that A. arenaria is cold hardy down to about 25F, but I'm curious about A. leucocalyx. It grows inland so it should be more hardy. I'm also curious to know how long it takes a coconut to mature and be ready for germination from the time the fruit is set until it's ripe. Also the same for Jubaeopsis and Allagoptera. Thanks, Dick
