another dippy dypsis dialogue

According to the PASCOA website and some of the books, Dypsis Gracilis is just a synonym for Dypsis Pinnatafrons. However, today in a very reputable nursery specialising in palms, I was able to buy both a D. Gracilis and a D. Pinnatafrons then just to be certain of my facts I also found a D. Pinnatafrons X Gracilis !! Any clever people out there who are up on the very latest names for these things ? I am still in recovery from my Chrysalidacarpus days. Peachy

Believe it or not I actually listen to ideas and quite often ign, I mean use those ideas. Spot number one: Spot number two: Spot number three: (shaded in afternoon summer sun) (I'm thinking Cyphophoenix here somehow.)

Sandlewood Palm??
by Wai`anae Steve- 10 replies
About a month ago I asked about a palm sold at the local Wal-Mart called Sandlewood. Some thought it might be Hyophorbe indica. I bought it today. It's in a maybe 4 gallon pot and really looks nice. Cost $22. Here are 3 pictures. What do you think? What ever it is, it's a beauty. Will look great in my front yard. In-ground pictures will follow in a few days. Wai`anae Steve

I've ordered some of these seeds and want to make sure I treat them the right way. The seeds were not cheap, so to speak. Does anybody have some tips on how to germinate these? Usually I use ziplock bags with neemcoir and put them away at around 35 degrees Celcius. But if there's a better way for these seeds, please let me know. Thanks!

Phoenix roebelenii hardiness?
by velutina- 15 replies
- 10.7k views
Most sources I look at claim P. roebelenii is hardy to 25-28F. Yet I see them all over in my neighborhood doing extremely well (even very large specimens). According to zone maps, my area is zone 9a (average minimum 20-25F). I see many mature P. roebelenii yet hardly any mature Syagrus romanzoffiana (which supposedly is hardy to 20F). So what's going on? Maybe the smaller palms are protected from the cold and wind and the tall S. romanzoffiana are exposed? Also, if P. roebelenii is doing well here, do you think Livistona spp. or Dypsis spp. might grow here with some protection? I've never seen any growing here, but i've also never seen them for sale. Yet, the local …

Ok....let the jokes fly! My injured patient....a Chamaedorea ernesti-augustii and the broken petiole bone. This must be surgically repaired as quickly as possible to allow blood flow to the extremities. My surgical tools: popsicle stick and duct tape. (Hey....we're on a budget here!) The patient. That damned crashing Roystonea frond....what a big bully! Surgical tools and patient ready. Patient now in Recovery Room. Patient should recover 100% with some water and rehabilitation. Here, the sutured patient is resting quietly.

Bactris gasipaes
by redant- 11 replies

When I bought my Bactris gasipaes I really did not think it was going to be a long term survivor,. I purchased a small 1 gal plant that now is over 20 ft tall. This palm has blown through each winter without the slightest of winter blues. It is written to be a zone 11 palm but my 10a seems to be fine for it. I hope to see some fruits from this palm soon.

Yesterday was our third meeting of the Costa Rican Palm Society. The meeting was hosted by Dr Dewayne Richardson who has been in Costa Rica since 1959. He retired in 1994 as Director of the Palm Research Group for United Brands Company. Dr. Richardson started this palm collection in 1990 and has about 250 species. Other than the Herrero brothers, this is one of the best private collections of palms in Costa Rica! We were handed a list of palm species upon arrival with location codes for each. All the palms were labeled with the name, the location where collected, and a location code. I'll do my best to id as many palms as possible. Enjoy the tour! Wodyetia bifu…

by freddyuk- 8 replies

I have in the past managed to germinate about 10% of my batches of arenga seeds but this year i bought 100 as i thought i was getting better at it. I have sowed in batcheS using various methods. I have used fungicide after soaking and used media which has been cooked in the microwave, also i have washed with mild bleach but they have all gone mouldy. They are prone to fungus but this is ridiculous I seem to be going backwards as a beginner! Any ideas please

Alabangalicious and Australicious
by Daryl- 16 replies

Mike Green (Newcal) and I revisited some palms we planted about 4 years ago in a local garden. We re-mulch every year or so, but apart from that these palms are never fed or watered, relying on rainfall, and whatever they can get out of the ground (although a little magnesium would help) We have had a wet year locally, and these things stunned both of us with their growth and health since we last saw them. Gotta love the native species for their toughness, and even though the Alabang is a hybrid, it seems to get all of the good traits from both parents. The Alabangs are 4 years in the ground, coming out of 8" pots, same as the Livistona australis. …
