Open house at my place Sunday Sept. 6 1 2
by Justin- 45 replies

We'll be having a summer BBQ at my place, and for the first time since late 2006 the garden looks "presentable" in my opinion. So I thought I'd invite over whoever is interested in checking out all of the palms, bamboo, flowering trees, Proteaceae, succulents, heliconias and other good stuff. Depending on when you arrive you'll get one of two garden tours. The "more" sober tour: Probably more informative, but less interesting The "less" sober tour: Less information, but more interesting If you're interested, PM me and I'll send you details.

Germination question
by LauraAnu- 5 replies

Hello, I collected some fresh foxtail seeds one month ago and soaked them for a few days to remove the fruit. I then put 6 in a baggie in a dark bathroom and 6 in a pot outside. Today when checking the baggie, I noticed roots and all six seeds had germinated. They have not thrown any spears. The baggie is small and so I carefully removed them and placed them in individual pots in the shed. Should I have planted them out this early? Should I cover the pots with plastic? I am new to this and would appeciate any advice. Laura

The latest meeting of the Hawaii Island Palm Society had a Plant Pathologist with a Ph.D. give a very informative presentation entitled Palm Diseases and Pests in Hawaii. While some info is specific to Hawaii, about 3/4 of the talk and slides would definitely be of interest to anyone growing palms. Learn what causes "accordion leaf," and "crown leaning or deformity." Diagnose your brown spots - fungus, copper spray, or nutrient deficiency?. What's that orange/yellow flecking or spear damage? I was allowed to record and make it available on Palmpedia. I learned a lot, and would suggest that you not miss the chance to view this. It's 1 hour long, so set aside some …

We had a BPACS outing today, to the garden of Phillip Arrowsmith in suburban Brisbane. This garden is now 27 years old, and has constantly evolved and changed over the years. It has endured several droughts and even a direct hit by a huge bolt of lightning which took out several mature Caryotas and a lot of smaller palms around them. However, new plants have been acquired and now find their home there... The garden is a little over a quarter of an acre in size, with a reasonable slope from front to back. Here is a photo from the street...pretty easy to spot the palm enthusiasts garden! Daryl

Bismarckia or Latania?
by Gileno Machado- 19 replies
- 3.8k views
These two came from the South as small seedlings, same size, almost 6 years ago. The Bizzie has been a faster grower, now almost 3 meters tall, while The L. loddigesii barely reaches 2, but it's located in a much drier spot. They are both quite showy, every visitor here prefers Bismarckia in terms of colour and choose Latania for the nicest shape. Which one do you prefer? (Please add your own pictures) PS: Anyone ever heard of these two genera being able to inter-hybridize?

What Rhapis species/variety is this?
by Alberto- 8 replies

Here in Brazil Rhapis excelsa is a very common palm in nurseries. I have few clumps growing in the garden and also R.multifida grown from seeds. I was looking for a R.humilis but I heard it is rare here. Today I saw a different looking Rhapis in a nursery. The owner said it was a...´´Palmeira Rhapis. The palm look strange to me. The size and collor of the petioles: longer colms and green. The petioles are softer, longer, darker green and more leaflets per fan than on my Rhapis excelsa. The description of Harri Lorenzi´s palm book doesn´t entirely match with my palm, but a lot of characteristics are the same. Could this be a R. humilis? Right:R.excelsa and left:my new st…

I think the only photo I've seen on Palm Talk that was of Jubaea X Butia was posted by Gaston in Argentina. It was growing near a pure Jubaea and had grown much faster. This is not to be confussed with Butia X Jubaea which looks entirely different from Jubaea X Butia. Anyone have one? I don't, and have never seen one in the flesh. Dick

I wanted to get some work done in the yard, but it's too dang hot. So I decided to take photos. It's almost too hot for that. I moved these from the greenhouse to the front porch because of the heat: Chambeyronia, Hedysepe, and Lytocarium.

It seems alot of discussion promotes the fact that you may think you have a Red Latan when you actually have a Blue or Yellow. I purchased this specimen about five years ago as a Red Latan. Is it really a Red Latan? Please post your Red Latans or anyother item in the scope of Lataniality.

Archontophoenix maxima

A few photos I took around lunch time today in the Herberton Range, on north Queensland's Atherton Tableland. This grove of A. maxima is growing along a permanent creek in moist sclerophyll forest dominated by Eucalyptus grandis. It does burn from time to time, but the palms are somewhat protected by the moist ground either side of the creek.

Prestoea acuminata var. montana...
by Kostas- 19 replies
- 2.3k views
Hello! After much efford,i have managed to keep alive 4 or 5 Prestoea acuminata var. montana seedlings These are and have always been at the same number of leafs but one of them is,and have always been, considerably larger in size than the rest and the more they grow, the more intense the size difference becomes. So,i would like to ask you if this is normal and it is just a strong and robust seedling(and its indeed a robust seedling as it doesnt have any stunted leafs while all others have some stunted leafs on them) or if its a hybrid or even another species? Something i had noticed when i received them as germinated seeds is that some had a brown membrane surroundin…

Hello! I would like your help in IDing a Dypsis seedling i have. As many of you know,i got 3 Dypsis seedlings of probably 2 different species, as Kentiopsis magnifica last year,so the name they came for doesnt help much...2 of the seedlings didnt make it for various reasons which were not the responsibility of the seller however. 1 died from cold in my unheated greenhouse(didnt expect it to die with only -1C or -2C at the very very most)and the other died of unknown reason, probably related with too much water but i am not sure,it wasnt under my care when the decline started and the it progressed fast with the spear turning to a brown mush and colapsing just ouside the …

Pinanga glaucifolia

I'm growing more of this Pinanga sp. than any other tropical, probably because it's a tougher than most Pinangas. There is a nice specimen on PACSOA (here) provided by Colin (palmtreesforpleasure). Lovely dark, thick leaves and an all-round attractive potted plant IMO. Are many nurseries growing it? Do you have one in your collection?
