Phoenix roebelinii Flowering in Zone 8b
by nitsua0895- 2 replies
I didn't think this would happen for a few more years so I was shocked when I went outside and discovered that my P. roebelinii was flowering. It wouldn't be a big deal at all in the tropics but it's so rewarding after keeping it alive for two winters in my greenhouse. I only used a small, portable heater so I'm pretty sure that the palm handled temps in the upper 20's without damage when the low outside the greenhouse was around 20F for several hours.

Ray Baker and his namesake
by colin Peters- 2 replies

Always wanted to show this picture, but have no idea who took it. So hope it is ok. Ray baker toiled endlessly at Lyon Arboretum, it is because of his effort there is one of the greatest palm collections on the planet, amongst other plants. Saw him many times up there, but never said hello to him. Now I wish I had. His namesake can be seen up in our valley, so there is a special connection to Pritchardia bakeri to my family, who has been in the valley for 105 yrs. much aloha, and thank you to Ray Baker.

My copernicia fallaense was completely exposed and hammered by IRMA for 5-6 hrs at 65-75mph. Initially I though the shredding of leaves was the only damage.

Newly Planted Queen Palm
by ChrisA- 2 replies
Good Afternoon, Well, I bit the bullet and planted a Queen palm outside of my office window. I know it is very marginal here, and nearly all were wiped out in the last cold spell, but if USDA zones are really creeping northward and are trending more zone 9A or better, than what does it hurt?? If it gets taken out in 20 years I'll be nearly 70, so it may be a non-issue. My question is in regard to fertilizing. I know you should never fertilize a newly planted palm for the first year in the ground, but given the Queen palm's need for Potassium and Magnesium should I be supplementing those nutrients as well as acidifying the soil with a new specimen? Defi…

Daughter’s Bismarckia

Hello ladies and gents, On September 27th, 2020 my third child was born. On that exact day I also planted a Bismarckia In my front yard. This was not planned at all, my wife was having some contractions throughout the previous night and some in the morning but nothing too serious. That morning I planned on doing some planting and followed through with the plans. Right after the Bismarckia was in, my wife told me it was time to go to the hospital (Barley even had time to take a picture and water the palm). Long story short, here we are 2 years later, God willing, and I decided that it’s only right to take a picture each year to see both of their growths. This Bismarc…

Spring Cleanup on the Back Lanai

This past week we finally had some springlike weather - today we are back to clouds, rain and January temps for the next 7-10 days. The past 18 months have taken a brutal toll on our gardens: Hurricane Ian in 2022, drought in summer 2023, then non-stop clouds, more rain than last summer and protracted low temps in 2024. We've had a record 84+ days of clouds and no sun. I spent much of last fall living at Airbnbs in Tampa while my husband was treated at Moffitt Cancer Center. My container gardens were on their own. In early October I moved many of my potted tropical palms onto the back lanai where they had access to irrigation and shade cloth. I haven't done much to/f…

by junglegalfla- 2 replies

About a yr and a half ago, a bird stole my plant tags. At the time, I posted pics of the seedling because I wasn't sure which one was the Clinostigma savoryanum and which one was a Archontophoenix. The palm on the right was deemed to be the Clinostigma. Now I am not so sure They both look like king palms to me although the left sided palm is much bigger and robust. Any ideas?? Left palm right palm

Drought and heat damaged ramsayiis watch the new floods
by Walter John- 2 replies
Australia is a country of extremes, from hard hot drought to floods. Many of my plants suffered severely from the drought that ended with a flood within 12 hours. Check the pictures down the back yard where the dry creek as at last Friday has turned into a bank buster of flooding proportions. Some Licuala ramsayi hold on, others have waited too long. Nothing fazed the Livistona decora, it doesn't care if it's in an oven or in a creek.

A couple of Interesting Palms at CSU Long Beach
by anaheimpalmguy- 2 replies

Saw a couple of interesting palms today while driving by Cal State University Long Beach, on the 7th St side of the campus. First was the BIG Acoelorrhaphe wrightii clump, beautifully trimmed and maintained and in bloom. I've seen fairly big clumps in San Diego and Palm Springs, but this one was bigger. A quick Google image search of this species does show some clumps that are even bigger than this one, but it looked they were mostly in Florida and the southeast. Second, around the corner of the building from the Accoelorrhaphe was some kind of Phoenix cross. At first I thought it looked like a huge roebelenii, because of the finer texture, shiny green of the…

This palm has been looking dead for months. Then it sprouted a side trunk; so I thought at least I still have a palm. Then out of nowhere it starts to push the rest of the leaf that had died back to the bud. Now a 2nd trunk is sprouting off the base of the trunk. I wish I knew what this one was. I hope it is not a Euro Fan, I am hoping some kind of thrinax. Do they clump?

Around 2005 I built a small pond for my wife as she wanted to grow water lilys Couple of years later 2008 I bought a Cyrtostachys renda put it in a cement pot and placed in in one corner of the pond sitting on a cement block. At some point in time my lady bought some papyrus thinking it would look nice in the pond. Well for a few years yes. Then it decided to take over the pond including the pot w/my Cyrtostachys renda. Grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr Yea the palm is in there somewhere..... Above picture was 2019. I began searching w/a pair of hand loppers and found the palm. Just pulled off the old leaf base, this palm alway shows some nice color. I have about 75 of these in the ground that I grew all from the same seeds and all the seeds from the same tree. Colors on the crown seem to vary from brown/green, maroon and this nice reddish blush that I like the best.
