All the beccariophoenix alfredii growing on the hill here made it through the Winter in a splendid fashion, super healthy, all are pushing new growth. However, the large alfredii I planted out in the open at the bottom of the hill as an experiment to expose it to cold has spear pull. Proof to me that this is not a very hardy palm. It was exposed to 26F down there. Bummer!!! Me thinks this might be a USDA 10a palm after all.

Hello friends, I really hate to post this without having a picture of the subject yet, but there is an interesting looking CIDP I have come across. It has all the typical characteristics of a CIDP, except that the fruit it holds are a nice bright red. This may be more common than I'm aware of, but the CIDP's I see typically have yellowish orange fruit that either fall off as such, or turn black on the palm before falling. I gathered several seeds from the ground and they look no different than the typical seed in size, shape etc. And the few I found that still had their fruit, were still red and ripe. My question is.... is this a common variation, or is it perhap…

I got this super silver last year at the pssc banquet. If I remember right it was a plant that (elhoagie) brought. Anyways, I popped it in the ground the next day and it has grown way faster than I thought it would. It was looking great but alway dark green and I was wondering when they start to show silver. This newest leaf is way more silver than the rest of the plant. I thought it would be more of a gradual change but this is pretty fast change in my opinion. I'm loving this palm!

Despite living in a less-than-ideal place to grow almost any of the dypsis species, I have come to really appreciate this genus. Being relatively new to the palm world, I don't have much to show, but here is why i love the dypsis (dypses? dypsises?) This is my small, 1-gallon prestoniana. I bought it from Jeff Searle in October, and shipped it all the way back to myself here in CA. Since then, it's been pretty much faring for itself through our cold winter nights (including many nights in the low 30s). They arrived. I am very enthusiastic about these two. The main reason is their thickness of both their stems. Reminiscent of my first and most thriving coco: golden malayan dwarf. It also had a very wide neck. My other green malayan dwarf (rip) was tall, but very thin in stemwise. So I planted one of the new Red Tahiti/ Haari Papua dwarves in the place where my previous (and only) Atlantic tall perished. The plot had already one week of liquid copper drained it it. These are one of my favorites. They grow well for me with plenty of water and fertilizer. This was originally planted in probably 2015 or 2016 and was in a 2 gallon pot with 3 others. I let them all grow in the ground for a year or two but then decided to edit out 3 of the 4 so that I could get a big, fat trunk going. Show off your Majesty Palms!

I'm curious to know the single most expensive palm purchase any of you have made and if you're happy or disappointed with that decision. My most expensive palm is a common queen, of all things, but a big 35 year old that I had craned into position four and a half years ago in a place that I was too impatient for a big, mature palm. It cost me $1,000.00 including its installation. Notice in the picture that the younger queens nearby (planted from 15 gallon cans at the same time) are catching up to the big old one. I'm still glad for the purchase. I don't regret the purchase of any palm, dead or alive now.

Alright,nobody laugh at me on this, because I have never heard of this being done, but has anyone in the world transplanted a double coconut? In about a month or so it is going to be moved as opposed to being bulldozed. Has anyone here dome it or heard of anyone someone else doing it that I could contact? I know the reasons why they are supposed to be virtually impossible to move but the people involved with the move are going to go to any extreme to make this happen. Thanks for any help on this. Tom

Growing tropical palms in subtropical climates can be a challange to say the least. One problem I seen, with growing some tropical palms in area with cool winter are stunted leaves in spring... that can take all summer before normal size leaves return... I had this problem with Veitchia and other tropical palms...but I have others that don't have this problem... Like Roystonea, Acrocomia and even Attalea sp... So I am interested to know what tropical palms handle cool winters without having those ugly stunted leaves in spring when growth resumes.....

Ive wanted a teddy bear for over a year now. And it finally happened today. Not quite 100% legal i don't think but we dug it and loaded it anyway. A friend of mine that knows I'm into palm trees asked me about some fuzz growing on a palm in back of his crummy run down apartment complex. I got more palms than sense. I knew winter come for them eventually and this weekend it will. Lows will fall to the low- mid-30s, the coldest since Jan. 2010. I pondered the mess I find myself in and decided some of my tropical palms are worth saving. So, today, we began moving the lucky ones (uber tropical Arecas, Licualas, Pinangas, etc.) indoors. Others currently residing in mini greenhouses (or not) will be covered with the silver cover from my husband's 1979 Lincoln Mark V heated by two oil space heaters tucked beneath. Howdyall: bo's thread on CIDP got a bit hijacked by this but I thought it warranted a new discussion for easier future reference. How's the fight going as to the Red Palm Weevil over in Europe? There were lots of disasters, but perhaps some glimmer of hope. We here in the Land O'La La are still sitting ducks, putting on our armor, and just fended off an attack. So how about it? Tonight we noticed the crown of the huge Bizzie that graced our front yard had totally collapsed. When my husband cut off fronds and pulled out the center he saw weevils/beetles running for cover. They are black with red markings. I'm sure this is the same pest that is destroying Bismarckias all over Cape Coral. This palm started struggling last winter. Since we first noticed it was doing poorly, we have treated it with buckets of Merit and extra fertilizer. I suspected it was infested from the beginning but my husband insisted it was doing better. There have been many topics on palms you like, palms you want to plant, palms you wish you could plant but can't. I thought it was also interesting to hear what are the palms that people don't like, never intend to plant or simply refuse to plant! For myself, I dislike clustering sorts in general with a special dislike for D. lutescens. Borassus (familiarity has bred contempt I suppose), Syagrus (too untidy), Canary date (too large and spiny), Washingtonia, and Ravena rivularis also find mention. Please add what's on your Negative list.

Here is the image gallery of the garden of Gregg Hamann in El Cajon, CA. This is one of those rare multi-generational gardens where you can see some of the tallest Dypsis and Pritchardias found anywhere in California. This is where you can spot a fat Acrocomia (Gastrococos) crispa, a mysterious Dypsis "Frilly Leaf", a towering Cyphophoenix nucele, and too many other rare species and hybrids to count. Andy Green, who has appeared here before, just moved into his new house on the Gold Coast. He needed some help with his new garden, so we all got together and pitched in to help him get his new garden established.
