Documenting ranges/gradients?
by Darren Michael- 2 replies

Hi everyone, I'm an artist/cartographer/landscape architect and palm enthusiast with also a general interest in plant geography (natural and horticultural). I've seen a lot of posts here dealing with the actual and potential ranges of various palms, including using google street views to document the northernmost/southernmost example of a given species. This goes beyond palms, but I'm curious - has anyone ever come across, or contemplated, a combination of street views at even intervals along a temperature gradient, say from New York to Key West, documenting the appearances of various species at certain points? It would create a sort of photo-transect along the gradient,…

Looking for best palm for zone 9B
by Kidderarch- 2 replies
I’m in search of the perfect palm for near our pool. We are zone 9b and love the look of queen palms but read that they flower every other month and can be quite messy. I’d love a palm that doesn’t grow too tall so it’s easier to maintain. Also love the look of multiple trunks. Anyone have any suggestions?

I've had this seedling in a terracotta pot for months and it's been on a decline for months and I've been meaning to get to it but just kept forgetting or putting it off, but today I decided to pop it out of the pot and the root growth is so sad. Pretty much little to no growth, but it's still alive with green and pushing a new leaf, but terribly slow and it's not growing roots quick enough to support the new leaf that's just barely popping out. I have a small cup prepared for it with new better soil and I let it chill in some hydrogen water for a while. Is there anything else I should do before "potting" it up, or is this a "pot and see what happens" situation becau…

Benificial to fertilize during winter in my climate?
by Palmfarmer- 1 follower

It obviously depends on the species. I have noticed my date palm, Butia, livestona Chinensis, Filabusta and queens etc are growing in the winter allthough a lot slower. The winter here usually last from january To mid february. With nightime temps hovering around 5-0 celcius and some very brief dry cold dips below zero at times as well depending on the winter. Then the days consist of 20-25 in the daytime. Is it safe for me to apply some all purpose triple 17 and water with a mineralbased flower fertilizer high in pottasium mixed with a little fish emulsion to make the npk close to what traditional palm fertilizers have during the winter? The …

Dear Palm Talk Members, not many of you know me personally, I am a Spanish landscape architect living and working in Rio de Janeiro (yes,I know how lucky I am). I became a Palmtalk forum member a few years ago when I became IPS member and I was still in university. I haven´t been very active in the forum since a while ago, but I always check what´s going on around here. Despite the fact that I´m not that active in the forum, I am active in the palm world. I have worked as a landscape architect for the restoration project of the Palmetum de Santa Cruz de Tenerife in Spain, along with my good friend Carlo Morici and other experts and professionals in the area from a…

Caryota in Manipur
by nickpgp- 2 replies

Greetings all. Not posted on here before, but wondered if there were any mad-keen Caryota geeks here, that could tell me if they know of any species with white undersides to the foliage? I've recently returned from Manipur, NE India, where we travelled (painfully) to the Burmese border over one of the worst roads ever (semi-) built. Only passable by small Jeep and only in the dry season. At the lowest altitude we got to, at about 1000m asl, a couple of Caryota species occurred in the forest. One of them appeared to be possibly C. obtusa, though none were particularly hugely tall, but the other was a small clustering species with white undersides to the leaf segments and t…

Acrocomias in Hillcrest Heights ( Central Florida )

Here is a street view of Acrocomias in Hillcrest Heights , in Polk County , not far south of Lake Wales . This is on the slope going down to Crooked Lake , from the south. This is a hilly area , ( some well over 200' ). I was told about these palms by a friend many years ago. I've driven around there a lot of times in the past , and there are a few Banyans etc , but I haven't been there for 10- 15 year now . Screen Shot 2015-10-19 at 8.42.43 PM by Bill H, on Flickr

Volunteer Seedling ID Request
by bananaman- 2 replies

So, recently, quite a few little palm seedlings have popped up around my yard. We don’t have any mature palms, so I’m not super sure of the species. In my neighborhood, there are quite a few mature palms — some big Washingtonia (mostly filifera), some big Chamerops, some decent sized Butia, and a lot of Sabal minor. A bit further away, there are some big S. mexicana and a Brazoria Sabal at Barton Springs Nursery. There are two different kinds of seedlings I’m looking to ID. Here are the first four — they’ve got a pretty bulbous base and pretty short roots. The leaves that haven’t been weed whacked are 5-6”. The second one grows a lot faster th…

Surprised how many 9b/10a plams this place has, considering it is 20km inland and on flat ground, I see it's not in a river valley however, but more on a plateau which must help.

Washingtonia Robusta Disease ID
by Zcxc- 1 follower

Hi, looking for some guidance on what to do with a large Washingtonia Robusta that seems to be dying. It was nice and healthy only about 3 months ago but since then has declined rapidly. I thought it was just a nutrient deficiency but it has not responded to a standard palm fertilizer. I know it's difficult to see in the pics but the latest frond coming out is very undersized and already browning on the leaf edges. At this point I feel that it's not able to be saved but just wanted to get some thoughts on what is the cause, we have several others nearby and am worried it is something transmittable. Thanks!

Palm ID - Deeply split palmate leaf, trachy?
by Mauna Kea Cloudforest- 1 follower

This palm has a suspicious label, was identified by nursery as trachycarpus takil, but the leaf looks nothing like a takil, it's way too deeply divided and the leaflets are wider. Can someone ID this? Petioles are unarmed. Are there multiple forms of takil? It has glaucus undersides, and the wider segments suggest trachycarpus latisectus. Waxy coating under the leaf: Another view from above.

Caryota single trunk identification

Is there a way to identify which species of Caryota I have. I can't seem to find anything that list the difference, besides over all high and a few basic characteristics. Can this be determined by the leaves? I got it from a place that was going out business, so no information and was in too small of pot.

Sun Acclimation
by ellidro- 2 replies

I raise this question because I recently had to put some of my sun acclimated palms into my garage so I can finish a back yard overhaul/re-model. If I leave them in there for about a month will they burn when I take them out? The garage is actually pretty light due to a large window. Also when I am home I leave the garage door open which alows for direct sunlight for a few hours in the evening. Any info would be appreciated.
