Canary Island Date Palm - Different Kinds?
by honda03v6- 3 replies
- 1.9k views
I am trying to locate a palm tree that I see every day on my way to work. Without knowing the name of it is my first issue, but to me it looks like a large pineapple in the ground. I put in pineapple palm in a search and it comes up but certain "pineapple palm" pics that come up look different. It sits low to the ground and does not grow tall. I believe it might be called a Canary Island Date Palm but when I look up images online some of the pictures show it in the "pineapple" form with it low to the ground while others pictures show it extremely tall. Are there different kinds of these palms? I am looking for the one that sits low to the ground. Is there a specif…

Palm Surgery

A few weeks ago I noticed a dark spot forming at the base of this carpoxylon. I have seen this on royals so I figured it was just the leaf beginning to split before its shed. The leaf has started to split but the dark spot kept getting larger. Yesterday I noticed that the spot just didnt look right so I took a closer look and noticed the unmistakable smell of rot. I poured hydrogen peroxide all over the area and into the crown...tons of fizzing. I also marked the spear. Today I decided to take more drastic action. I started probing the area trying to take out the rotten tissue and see how bad the situation is. There was an ant nest immediately behind the darke…

Zone 5 Windmill palm

This video is the most inaccurate video I've ever seen! I would explain the problems with it, but this youtube comment says it all. Awesome Guy 10010 hours ago this is crap. windmills cant take lower then 5 degrees, possibly 0 degrees, once established. even with wrapping that palm would not survive a zone 5 or 6a winter. it would take some expensive Christmas lights, mulch, and tarps and blankets to survive -15f. and snow? ive seen snow in georgia and sc and many different cheaper palms can survive snow. just becuse a palm can survive snow doesnt mean it is that hardy. putting a potted windmill outside could only survive postitive 16f due to the…

Chamaerops growth rate

I have a Chamaerops I planted last April, and I took a photo today to see if it grew at all in that time, as I’ve read they’re fairly slow growing. Mine seems to be growing at a fast rate, especially for its first year in the ground. First photo is the day after I planted it (4/09/19), and the second photo is from today (4/16/20). I did lose one of the original four larger trunks this winter, although we only hit 25 for one night.

Sabal Palmetto going to seed?
by zimm- 1 follower

I have a Sabal Palmetto that was put in about a month ago, and had an inflorescence growing when it arrived but had not gone to flower yet. It has gone to flower since then and was covered with insects. Now the flowers have gone and little green balls are forming. I have no other flowering Sabals so I am curious if this is a normal thing and the seed will not be viable, or if the fact that seeds appear to be forming means they were pollinated? I know of only one other Sabal in the neighborhood (via conversation with a guy on Nextdoor) I know his is a ways away and I have no idea if it was flowering at the same time. Since Sabals are supposed to be dioecious, I am…

chamaedorea flowers @ anthesis
by MattyB- 3 replies
Since the shutdown of Kamipalms website I can't find any good anthesis pics. Does anyone have one? I've got some C. alternans pollen that I'm trying to apply to C. plumosa. Probably not a probable hybrid but I thought I'd try. But I can't tell if the flowers are at anthesis yet. Do they noticeably open up and show a little yellow?

The Palm Planting Continous
by osideterry- 3 replies

Instead of creating a new thread each weekend, i thought I'd create one and just update each week. Behind my pool, the ground drops off to a drainage channel, next to my fence. I reinforced the ground with legacy blocks to stop erosion, and to create better planting beds. Yesterday I braved the heat and filled 2 slots I have their. This King Alexander replaces the one I lost in last year's freeze. Those are coffee grounds at the base... it has a minor scale problem I'm treating with neem oil, and decided throw in coffee also.

Big Trouble for South Texas
by oliver- 3 replies

I have noticed quite a few dead Queen palms in addition to some Phoenix which were not typically affected by the disease that killed all of our CIDP's.(ie roebelenii) If this new disease is really going to knock out all the queen palms, then some of you local nurserymen and landscapers stand to make some big bucks replacing them all. This is the first one that has gone on me personally. I noticed it looking bad about 6 months ago, but there have been a few others in the hood that have done the same thing.

Palm IDs
by PalmatierMeg- 3 replies

I've been working diligently on my cold-decimated shade garden since Sunday - and have the aches and pain to show for it. I've managed to plant a passel of palms but in the process have discovered I have lost name tags on some potential candidates for planting. I also have questions about others. First, I need IDs on the following palms Palm #1: compact, with reddish stem and black speckles on the petioles. In the back of my mind, I think "Dypsis rivularis" because I bought a seedling last spring at a sale. Palm #2: starting to go palmate. Leaves have no petioles and are serrated. For a while I thought it might be Livistona nitida but my other L. nitida seed…

Pinanga crassipes seedling care questions
by sashaeffer- 3 replies

Picked up this little guy and wanted some real world advice on care. Since it's supposed to like shade and humidity was planning keeping it in master bathroom where humidity will be naturally higher, and room only gets diffused light from a north facing skylight and small West facing window that is under a covered porch. Anyone with experience with these on here that can offer advice and their success story? I'm going to keep it behind a Joey palm I acquired this summer and has so far...been doing just fine where it is. pics...
