Need help finding a specific fertilizer for my Coccothrinax Borhidiana (rare Cuban palm)

Hi, I have 4 of these beautiful palms which are endemic to Cuba and grow on a limestone beach. They're seriously endangered in the wild so I feel fortunate to have them. One of my palms is struggling. I'm told its a nutrient problem. I read that this palm grows best in a Serpentine soil -- rich in nickel and/or heavy metals such as iron, chromium, cobalt, and manganese. No calcium. And could use a regular iron/manganese supplement. My question is this: Where do I find a fertilizer such as this???? Thank you in advance for your assistance. PS: I have attached two photos -- one is a healthy vibrant CB palm, and the other is the unhealthy palm. They started exactl…

Leaf spots
by Hammer- 3 replies
A while back I picked up this Beccariophoenix Madagascariensis from a very generous Dooms Dave. On some of the older leaves you will notice some very dark spots. I was talking with Dave today about it and admittedly it had suffered from a little lack of water in years past but otherwise no other known problems. He wasn't sure how to diagnose the spots either so here I am. The newer leaves don't seem as impacted. However... The latest leaf it is pushing started growing slowly but steadily. Then it seemed to stall a bit due to some cooler weather...either that or I was watching it too much and a watched pot never boils. In recent weeks I have noticed more slow…

Bentickia nicobarica
by Richie- 3 replies

I grabbed a couple of bentickia's the other day amongst other things. I bought these because they are fast growing and take sun, which I need in the Ex rainforest. This was decimated in 2010 during Cyclon Ului and took many weeks/months to clean up . I plan on putting a couple of Clinostigma samoense in this area also to provide canopy for further plantings. This Bentickia was put in about 7 years ago Some of the destruction from Cyclone Ului 2010

Cyrtastachys hybrid

Its been about 5 years since people were talking about the more cold hardy Cyrtastachys hybrid and I've seen some nice pictures of some big ones. So what is the availability on those here in Florida now? It might be worth a try even if I have to keep it in one of my greenhouses up here in Lakeland.

Palm Food

Not food for your palms, but food from palms for me…. Eutrupe olecerea pops I guess. I saw this in the checkout line at Wildfork Foods, so I got one…. Kind of gritty, tart, not too sweet (which I liked). Not bad. I sat in the car and opened it up. Sadly, I bit off the top, gave it a firm squeeze and it shot dark purple syrup goo out of the bottom all over my crotch.. That was an unfortunate turn of events. I guess I shouldn't have squeezed it so hard. Thank god I was headed home. Side note: They are putting Thrinax radiata all over the place in parking lots down here, and Vetchias that are tall with white crown shafts in the medians. They look …

washingtonia hybrid with other genus.

Does there exist a hybrid with another genus. What is most closely related, I'm guessing Brahea. It seems like its traits such as growth rate would make hybrids desirable.

JAW DROPPING GARDEN IN FULLERTON
by OverGrown- 3 replies

I was visiting a relative of mine in the hills of Fullerton, across from St. Jude's Hospital and as I drove into the neighborhood, I spotted a huge C. gigas and noticed it was just a street over... Drove up to the house to find one of the most diverse collection of mature palms & cycads I have seen up to this day!!! I didn't want to bother the owners but they had a greenish gate w/ a couple palm insignias on main driveway section of it. I know someone here has to know who that is? I've been going to this neighborhood for ten years and only noticed it now... HOW DO I GET A TOUR????!!!!!

Hello everyone! My mom decided to do deck plants again, so we're potting and stuff outside. She realized that she needs more center plants, and palms are great for that! Any suggestions for some palms that we could use to look tropical outside for the summer, and possibly keep inside for the winter? Thanks! Jason

Can anyone id this probable SW Pacific palm?
by kentiopsis- 3 replies

Aloha, I received seed for this palm from the IPS seed bank in the late 70s or early 80s. During many commutes to Alaska for work, in the 70s and 80s, the tags were lost, and I forgot the name. I'm not even sure if it was identified to genus or species, but I imagine it was id'd to genus. The pics were taken 5 to 10 years after I got the seed. I did not see this palm in 25 or 30 years of garden tours with the Hawaii Island Palm Society or in New Cal and N. Australia during the 2000 Biennial, and I was looking for it. Ken Foster tentatively id'd it as a Hydriastele sp., but he was uncertain, and by now, it's probably been reclassified, anyway. I'm not a botanist, unfortun…
