The Palm Society of Southern California will be having an article about hybrid palms in its magazine soon, and one of our contributors cited Merrill Wilcox's seminal article "How to make a hybird." Anyone know where I can find it?

I finally have some seeds being produced but they seem awfully small. Little white fruits like the Radiata but 1/2 the size. The seeds are like BB’s. Is that normal or are they underdeveloped?

Hydroponic seed starting?
by sashaeffer- 3 replies
Wanted to start a new thread about hydroponic palm seed starting as I was thinking about giving it a try. Did a search and most previous posts on Palmtalk are very old and discussion moved from palms to vegetables. In looking at different hydroponic set ups I didn't see any that involved any heat, just above lighting which is nice after germination. I suppose with some inexpensive systems they could be put on a seed germination heat mat. Has anyone here tried hydroponic palm seed germination? If so, what species of palms did you have best success with? Scott Omaha, NE USA

I just found a site by accident listing some palms and Cycads, and I clicked on the link to this one and noticed the strange black spines that apear to be growing from out of the midrib of the frond. Any idea what the purpose these perform, and is it indeed a palm? aiphmes species Also it lists Caryota gigas as Ultra Rare, is that right?

The baggy method? Nah.

I passed by some nice Phoenix canariensis at a bank a few weeks ago and stopped to pick up some seed that was on the ground. These seeds already had their fruity coats gone and were grey from sitting in the sun for what was probably since last year. I picked up maybe a hundred or so and drove home. I put them in a glass and filled it with water and to my amazement none of them floated. I had forgotten about them, they sat in the glass of water for a week or more in the garage. Sunday night I needed to do something with them and didn’t have any peat moss or perlite to germinate them in so I wrapped them in wet a terry cloth towel in a bucket. Now 3 days later about…

Phoenix Sylvestris - Root System
by honda03v6- 3 replies
- 1.8k views
Can anyone tell me how the root system is for the Phoenix Sylvestris? I have planted one about 3-5 feet away from my drain field, and now I am concerned that it is going to mess up my septic tank's drain field piping. Should I be concerned about this? I know all trees scope out water but I have heard that palm trees root systems are different. I just need to know if I should be relocating this palm or if it is ok to leave it where it is. Thanks for any help!

Bismarkia seed fail
by Rickybobby- 3 replies

Today I checked my baggy full of Bismarck seeds and found 2 that have germinated and the radical is going down to the soil. My fail was somehow in taking it out of the bag and getting it ready to put in a community pot. Half of the radical broke off. So for all you pros out there. Is this seed a goner? I put it back in the baggy to help. I know more will pop but I hate killing anything unless it’s a weed

Sabal minor in Bowie, MD, USA

Though it can get wicked cold here (coldest temperature I've recorded is minus 8.4°F), I do manage to grow a couple nice palms. Here's one of my dwarf palmettos that are starting to self sow in the area. Look closely - there's a little seedling right at the base. Yardstick is for comparison. This palm gets no winter protection.

Dear Palm Talk members, We have just returned from a trip to Nicaragua and Costa Rica. While in CR, we visited Wilson Botanical Garden outside San Vito, near the CR / Panamanian border. The IPS bi-annual visited it last year. For those whom have never visited this garden or are unaware of it, here is a little bio. It is said to have the second largest collection of palms in the world, along with 100’s of species of Anthuriums, Philodendrums, Heliconia’s and other tropical plants. However, during a fire in 1994 the garden lost a few buildings, including the Library, which housed all of the gardens planting records. So many of the Palm identities have been l…

Bought 2 years ago as Dypsis interrupta, i'm now quite sure it's not. The leaves and leaflets seem to be close to D nodifera / pinnatifrons, but the main difference is the persistants leaves along the stem with long internodes. Do you have an idea ? Thanks

Royal Palm and lightning
by Cynthiaald- 3 replies

I live in Rincon, Puerto Rico and have a group of royal palms, many are 40' tall. During the summer one of the smallest was hit by lightning and lost its head. Is it surely dead? If so, can I take it out roots and all? It is in close proximity to others and I'm afraid the roots may be all tangled together. Any help I would appreciate.
