Palms in unexpected places
by John in Andalucia- 3 replies

You can always be assured of finding a palm growing near the base of a tree from which it did not originate. Post any you find here, or better still, post some palms you've seen growing in unusual places. Three Washies growing in the fork of a peppercorn tree.

What determines how thick the bottom of a Washington robusta is. I see some bases that are pretty wide then they get skinny with height, and others that are really thin at the base.

Will this rain kill my coconut?!
by Zeeth- 3 replies
So apparently we have a huge rain coming from the Caribbean. It hasn't stopped raining for 2 days now, and it doesn't look like it's letting up any time soon. My coconut is planted a little below the soil level, mostly by accident, and the water is pooling around it. Every time the rain lets up for a few minutes I take a shovel and scoop all the water out I can. Will all this flooding kill my coconut? I just planted it, and I don't want it to die!

I bought a small Dypsis baronii nearly eight years ago. I kept it in a pot as I was renting. The last time I re-potted it was about four years ago could be five? It is still small and shares it's pot with a Justicia carnea a random cutting stuck in the pot. The Dypsis seems happy enough just slow. From looking at other posts on here I realise that this palm is variable in form and colour. Mine has red petioles and dark green leaflets. It is still a single stem not trunking yet but looks to be growing sideways along the surface of the soil. At this point I'm just a little embarrassed to share a photo of my D. baronii but would love to see what it could potentially gro…

Hydroponic culture of Palms
by CYPALMS- 3 replies

Fellow PTers, I have been searching the forum for some time with various keywords, trying to find information on hydroponic culture of palms. My interest is both academic and proffesional. What i have concluded so far from all i read, is some members have tried it back in 2007-2008 with success but the species reported were very few and with few details accompanying it. What i would like to ask is if someone has gone the extra mile to test various species and keep a log of the results, or any newer experience with newer materials and set ups. For example the subastrate that was mainly used back then was the expanded clay pebbles, while few years later this was su…

No not a bird, not a plane, a seeding Syagrus botryophora. Dropping seed bombs everywhere. Really a tough palm for most landscapes. Goes from nothing to a skyscraper in a few years. Works in my jungle however. Really can't due justice to the height of these in a picture.

Hey I’m new to this and need help with my palms sprouts (adonidia merrillii) the story goes I was on vacation and the people who own the place we stayed at cut the trees rack off and I found these seems and started growing them. So I been growing them by I have a heater set to 85 degrees in my room and I water them once a week and I potted them with cactus palm potting mix from miracle grow. But the issue is I was repotting my sprouts and in the second picture my palm sprout seed pod came off of the plant and I don’t exactly know but can it live without it seed is what I’m asking. And the last picture that sprout has is seed and is kinda dying and hasn’t open its leaves …

I think this was my first visit to Fairchild Tropical Garden, June 1977. Not a good photo--I was doing better Kodachromes with my Minolta, but it's enough to give a feel for how the famous group looked back then. Me? I moved to Wyoming in April 1978

I was in São Paulo last Thursday and Friday and took this picture while on the street. I would like to confirm what tree it is. It is commonly grown all over town. When I lived there some years ago I was not paying much attention to palms. I think it is a commonly grown palm in many areas. Thanks for the help. dk

Looking for a solid ID on a tricky one please
by PalmWarbler- 3 replies

I have what I believe are a pair of Ptychosperma elegans, however I'm not 100% sure so I'm asking the masses. The trees have done exceedingly well here in SE FL, and in 3 months shy of 4 years, they have grown from approx 4' to approx 15-16' with moderate care. I've attached a few pics of them which should help, but if any more are needed to really nail the ID I'm all for taking more. What I do know about these is that the squirrels absolutely love the seeds and have not only wiped me out on them, but also scarred the trunks from climbing the trees to get the fruit. Thanks in advance.

Hi, I'm new here but I want to know lots. I live in New Zealand and my wife and I have built an new place by the beach North of Auckland. In our new garden we have planted lots of palms mostly Queen, a Kentia and some Majestic. Some horrible person tried to steal some by ripping them out of the ground. They weren't sucessful as the majestic they tried for had already made good roots held on but broke off leaving the roots behind, sadly it died of course. But now I have a space and I would love to plant a Fish Tail palm or two. I have read a bit but seemed to find conflicting info. Does anyone know for sure that given a few years that these Fish Tail or Chinese (I th…

Chambeyronia houailou new red leaf

I was taking photos earlier today and noticed my largest Chambeyronia houailou is opening a new red leaf. A few days ago we trimmed away a tangle of Livistona jenkinsiana storm-damaged fronds that had wrapped themselves around the Chambeyronia's fronds, courtesy of Ian's winds. The Chambeyronia is down to 3 good leaves so I'm glad to see a new one open. Chambeyronia houailou, Cape Coral, FL 2023

a lot of people are trying to grow A. cunninghamiana in the mildest parts of the UK or Ireland but i never hear of poeple trying a Linospadix monostachya? they grow together so i think they have about the same hardines to cold. the small size of this palm makes it easy to protect during a cold winter and this is also the reason why i am thinking of planting one in my garden...my winters are colder than in the milder parts of the uk or ireland but i am willing to give it protection every winter but it would be helpfull to know at what temperatures damages starts to apear? i think they dont mind a long cool period like during my winters? (any other sugestions for small palm…

A question for the Brisbanians

Greetings to Brisbanians, especially those who don't live in the bayside suburbs. This will be the first winter for my Pelagodoxa henryana and I am uncertain of it's cold tolerance. I have seen photos of them growing outdoors in Orlando Florida which gets a lot colder than here but the specimen in the Mt Coot-tha gardens in in the conservatory. Now I am certain there are people out there who are much smarter than me who know the answer to this predicament, so here is your chance to gloat, skite and boast if you have grown one in the garden successfully and maybe share your secret. Please speak up too if you have proudly planted one only to have it croak at the first h…

Knowing my luck, had to show these before they go to palm heaven. The G, pauciflora is already showing black new leaves at this size, from Jeff Marcus. Seen his pictures of the full size ones growing, couldn't resist to try them. Also, a picture of a variegated Dypsis madagascariensis, that I got from seed. Anyone know if this variegation will last?? aloha

Hi guys, finally got the other 2 palms planted this week, another D. sp. 'Malagassy, and my D. sp. 'Maroantsetra, the new sp. 'Malagassy is on right. and it is pushing 2 large spears, maybe it will double, yesterday I took off the old leaf bases, and you can see where I have wetted it with alittle water on my finger, and that's what color the entire crownshaft is when the old leaf base is removed, Ed
