National Geographic Easter Island Article
by Jason in Orlando- 3 replies
An article in the current edition of National Geographic discusses the Rapanui (sp?) people of Easter Island and the conditions that contributed to the collapse of their civilization. Paschalococos disperta is mentioned several times (thought not by name) with regard to the role it played in island life and the role it may have played in the civilization's collapse. By no means is it in depth with regard to Paschalococos, but it is probably worth the fifteen minutes to read none-the-less. Interestingly, the artist's conception of the palms is indeed quite similar to Jubea chilensis. Jason

What is the current consensus (if there is one) as to the status of C. hookeri. Is it viewed as a separate species or is it still considered a form of C. macrocarpa?

I would like to thank Carl Potter (here in my town of Brentwood) for his gift of this fabulous Brahea edulis. Another example of the generosity found in members of the NorCal Palm Socienty and the IPS in general. I have learned a lot and been on the receiving end more often than not since I have joined. Carl, Thanks a bunch!

Wow, I'm excited! My very first palm seeds have sprouted. I feel like a new parent all over again! We were at Balboa Park, San Diego this last September and there was alot of fresh Kentia seeds that had dropped. I have had them over a closed heater vent to stay warm, for the last month, but it has taken 2 1/2 months in a mix to get to this point.. Most have just started to put out roots of about 1/2 inch, no cotledon leaves yet. What's next? When do I repot? Do I want to use 2", 4" pot, or community pot (worried about root disturbance when moving up)? I don't know how fast they grow, and don't want them to be too wet. Advice? Sorry no pics, boring... Besi…

Hemithrinax ekmaniana
by Al in Kona- 1 follower

HEMITHRINAX EKMANIANA is considered quite rare in cultivation outside of Cuba and only quite recently has some seed become available. This is my small very slow growing plant but I'm very happy to have one even if it is super small and likely will be for some time yet. For me it will always be considered a dwarf size palm. Perhaps the grandchildren might see it become taller and might even have to look up a bit to see its interesting palmate leaves.

Gophers vs. Voles
by Moose- 3 replies

I had the opportunity last weekend to talk with Bill (BS Man about Palms) while eating lunch. One topic brought up was the burrowing critters you guys have out west. We don't have burrowing rodents that attack our palm roots here in South Florida. I would be very frustrated nursing a palm along for years to have these destructive guys erasing all that care in a very short period. Just curious, which of the two do you out west consider the worse case sceario regarding damage to palms? The Gopher or the Vole?

Are These Ptychosperma?
by Johnny Palmseed- 3 replies

My neighbor has these doubles he got from Home Depot a couple years ago. They have grown rapidly and are seeding like crazy. I grabbed a few seeds but he didn’t actually know what it was. He said it was something I had never heard before but I think it’s a ptychosperma. Even though I have never seen these at any place locally.

When to cut palm fronds
by Foreverwood- 3 replies
I've always read to cut a palm frond only when it is completely dead, but also to make sure to cut off dead fronds. My question is other than for aesthetics, what happens if a dead frond is not removed? And when does water cease to travel through a frond? Thanks

Gastrococcus crispa first bloom
by NatureGirl- 1 follower

My Gastrococcus crispa or Acrocomia as it’s now called, has bloomed for the first time. Hopefully it will produce seeds. I still call it Gastrococcus bcuz the seeds are much smaller/different than other Acrocomia’s. They look more like Aiphanes seeds to me, also they germinate readily when fresh in 2-4 weeks, rather than years….Photos aren’t the best, it’s in a difficult location behind the shed. Even though it is thorny, it is Self-Cleaning which is great.

Palms in unexpected places

You can always be assured of finding a palm growing near the base of a tree from which it did not originate. Post any you find here, or better still, post some palms you've seen growing in unusual places. Three Washies growing in the fork of a peppercorn tree.

What determines how thick the bottom of a Washington robusta is. I see some bases that are pretty wide then they get skinny with height, and others that are really thin at the base.

Will this rain kill my coconut?!
by Zeeth- 3 replies
So apparently we have a huge rain coming from the Caribbean. It hasn't stopped raining for 2 days now, and it doesn't look like it's letting up any time soon. My coconut is planted a little below the soil level, mostly by accident, and the water is pooling around it. Every time the rain lets up for a few minutes I take a shovel and scoop all the water out I can. Will all this flooding kill my coconut? I just planted it, and I don't want it to die!
