Weird Washy trunk
by Alex High- 3 replies
I noticed this on Street View in Atlantic Beach, Florida. Very unusual trunk with thicker and thinner segments running up the length of it. What do you think is causing this, is it natural or from pruning? https://www.google.com/maps/@30.3466386,-81.3978357,3a,42.6y,297.81h,113.75t/data=!3m6!1e1!3m4!1ssEpapMW4oJ0hjawfJAj8QQ!2e0!7i16384!8i8192?entry=ttu

Seedling's leaves folding over

I recieved 3 Areca Vestiaria from a friend that has too many of them. They are all small in size, no more that 9 or 10 inches. Anyway they were bare rooted when they were shipped about 2 weeks ago. I repotted them when I got them and they looked good. All three had small new leaves that were already opening when I got them. They open up nice then started to fold over, or roll. It has been raining here for about almost 2 weeks with out much sun. I don't know if they are just now responding to being bare rooted, are they getting too much water, or not enough sun. They are in a very shady spot in the yard, so I moved one out to get more light this morning. An…

I like in the uk so it’s normally cold but the last few years we had hot summers so it has obviously grown well

If you missed out on the amazing D'Asign Palm Sale this weekend (check out PalmatierMeg's thread below), there's another amazing one coming up in October. Look at this from the PALM EXCHANGE...for sale forum: Searle Brothers Sale I went down to D'Asign from Merritt Island (290-mile round-trip) this weekend and I will be at Searle Brothers (380 mile rt) next month. Both are well worth the trip.

I transplanted two separate Archo clumps from my old garden that popped up from the mother trees there and since coming to their new home they have grown very well and are showing more colour on new leaves. They live in a fairly shaded area, although in summer there's a fair chunk of sun on them. Thought I'd share.

Night Moves/Mercury Vapor
by sur4z- 3 replies
When I purchased my house there were in ground copper housed mercury vapor lights. I love the soft green hue the lights make. As I added and subtracted and moved stuff around on the property, I wanted to add more of the same upligjting only to find no one was selling this type anymore...everything was LED which makes white light. I work in white light all day and I did not want more in my garden. So after a long search I found a company in Texas that still made the lights and I ordered them immediately. Here are few shots from the other night: C.macrocarpa T.radiata Ponytail and Stag horn (Elk horn?) A.catechu dwarf po…

I have some Adonidia and Foxtail palms around 6-7 feet that will be coming indoors for the late fall/winter. What kind of light would be best to keep them growing happy? I'm looking for a simple commercial plug and play option such as this: Grow Light Would one of these per palm be good? Or will they need something more substantial? Thanks

I purchased three small but healthy Rhopalostylis Sapida (Oceana) from a specialist palm nursery in Sep 2018. Planted all three in different situations within a 600m^2 plot of land. Interesting to compare them now. 1. Mostly in shade under a large tree fern, some morning sun. Doing ok but uniformly a very light green, seems to have darkened up since I gave it several light doses of general fertilizer. Current new leaf is opening, but seems shorter than last two, unless it's going to emerge some more. 2. In full sun first 2/3 of day year round and sheltered from most winds. Warm spot in summer. Under 2 layers of light shadecloth. This one has ne…

Corypha umbraculifera in Ft. Myers Park
by PalmatierMeg- 1 follower

Last Sunday afternoon my husband decided to drop in on a Ft. Myers Palm Park, the one by the former railroad museum, to see what was up. Overall, the palms look okay but rather ungroomed, likely because of covid issues. But some of the palms were seeding and we scarfed some Copernicia baileyana and prunifera seeds that had escaped being cut down last year. We also saw a juvenile Corypha umbraculifera that is already well on its way to dominating the rest of the park. It is already larger than my Sabal causiarum. My husband immediately fell in love with it. But I don't plan on getting one. I already have a young Tahina spectabilis and one giant monocarpic palm is enou…

The inflorescence on this diminutive little palm looked so similar to Pinanga, I had to do a double take. Looking at reference material, it’s genetic relationships remain unclear, that’s as far as I got. Anyway, a nice small, almost dainty palm that cannot be overwatered. Tim

Do any of your Sabals have windows?
by _Keith- 3 replies

While visiting Dick Douglas garden, Patric asked me if any of my Sabals had windows and showed me one (translucent area near center of the leaf.) I answered no. Well, working in the garden today, what do I notice that I had never noticed before, windows. So Patric, I was wrong, I do have a Sabal with windows. This one has never been identified, but I think it might be S. domingensis. Anybody else have Sabals with windows? Post em up if you do.

Need a clumper that can handle stagnant heat in 10a coastal alkaline conditions. And if that isn't hard enough, needs to handle full midday sun. And not lutescens or Pembana. Any suggestions?
