Archontophoenix purpurea, one of my top performers. Really getting BIG!! It was quietly putting its act together, hidden in the deep shade of a Brugmansia. 1.75 years from seed. Born August 2005. Love the newest, 7th frond. Look at that SIZE! Pic taken recently:

Chamaerops humilis with brown spears
by glasalle- 3 replies

I have a clump of Chamaerops humilis that sustained cold damage after 2021 February freeze in Austin, Texas. It lost all its leaves and some trunks died, but it quickly came back in the warm weather. and looked great until now, a year later. Now in March-April, I noticed several trunks producing light brown spears and fronds. All the already existing fronds look healthy. We have had very little rainfall (but I have watered it occasionally) in the last six months, so I don't suspect a fungus problem. Will it recover? s

Coral trees - Are they neighborly with palms?
by Christopher Dillman- 1 follower

Back to the 'finding the right flowering tree' in my palm scape.. Had a yellow flowering tree, like a Cassia or Thevetia, in my head. But now noticing the coral trees (eg Naked Coral Tree - Erythrina coralloides) in my north county San Diego neighborhood. There's also a fabulous grove of them at the Salt Creek Beach Park in Dana Point. Coral trees also remind of better vacation times in Hawaii. Can anyone speak on behalf of Corals - good, not so good? Any considerations to be aware of appreciated.

Areca Palm - advise needed
by John H- 3 replies
Dear palm enthusiasts I planted 4 Areca palms in my elevated planter. Some were already a bit tired and thirsty but I’m wondering if they didn’t carry any disease. After planting I fed with Miracle grow and sprayed with copper fungicide (premixed). Then later in about a week I discovered that my drip line was clogged and palms were too far out on the line to be fed enough water. So my question is, looking at the pictures are these symptoms on the foliage strictly due to palms getting insufficient water or does it look like it might also have a disease? See the trunk too. I numbered the pictures. Thanks for your comments

Royal and maypan pushing growth in Palm Coast, Florida.
by Gottagrowemall- 3 replies

Which fronds should I prune off? I don’t care about how they look right now because I know they’ll look fine in 1-2 months. I simply want your guys advice on what would be the best thing for the palms to get them ready for a warm spring. alfreddii and Sylvester were just added to show perspective on cold resistance. The coconut was wrapped with a couple blankets the royal had protection around the trunk.

Are these Brahea seedlings?
by Phoenikakias- 1 follower

In a large pot containing mint herb and hyacinths I throw at times unwanted palm seed, most of them being Chamaerops. But this time keep popping up seedlings with a long leaf tip and rather soft tissue. I can not remember whether I had thrown in there also seeds of Brahea brandegeei or another sp. Certainly those seedling do not look like Chamaerops. Anyone able to confirm at least the Brahea identity?

Palm Help.
by luke- 3 replies

Hi all, I recently rescued this palm, the lady said was a Canary island date palm, but i’m not sure? she said that it was 20 years old and she’s never protected it in winter or anything we’re in the UK zone 9a, her son repotted it last year but has been neglected for many years and now i’ve taken it off her and want to get it to its best. i’ve noticed these brown marks on the fronds and i’m not sure what they are, maybe frost burn or a nute deficiency, i’ve got some palm fertiliser but any help or suggestions would be great. Thanks

Date Palm Help Needed
by jreich85- 3 replies

I just got back from a one-week vacation and it is remarkable how much my Sylvester (or whatever hybrid it is) has declined in that time. It received Palmgain earlier this year and about two weeks ago I threw some Lesco 8-10-10 around it. I poured peroxide in the crown this morning and it fizzed some but nothing crazy. Any thoughts on what the problem could be? I grew this from seed and it’s been in the ground for 5 years always doing great until just now, so any advice would be greatly appreciated!

I am not certain but these are two tall ones: According to Riffle and Craft, it is most likely that these are two old D. leptocheilos because there are very few D. lastellianna in the continental U.S.

Then and now palms
by Kev Spence- 3 replies

I would be interested in seeing pictures of the growth rates of palms from way back when and the present day. I find it fascinating the growth rates that some palms can attain in a fairly short period. Here in the UK its mainly the good old Trachycarpus but Bismarkia seems to be quite a strong grower in the ideal spot. These 2 shots are from Fuerteventura (Canary Islands)at 28°north off the coast of Africa a winter hot spot for us guys in Europe. This shot is from 2004 a nice row of palms with the path clearly visible This was taken a couple of weeks ago, same palms same shot, they have moved on a touch and walking the path is a little more difficult.
