When I was in LA a couple weeks ago...I had the pleasure of meeing Dave from So-Cal. Got to see some very cool palms and left with a few goodies one of which was bag full of A. cunninghamia X alexandrea hybrid seeds. This will be my first attempt to try and germinate palms from seed. The seeds are going on their third day of soaking...What's the best method to removing the fibrous husk on the seeds? Thanks in advance.

Pritchardia experts needed!
by oliver- 3 replies
Bought a number of Pritchardia from Jeff Markus and Phil a few years back and put them in pots. Unfortunately, labels were lost and/or faded after a few years. I put several of them in the ground about 4 years ago and two of them have done very well, surviving the 24hrs of 29 degrees and freezing rain about 2 years ago. I was under the assumption that both pictured were "remota" however they are obviously different. The second one has much rounder and bigger leaves (around 4 ft in diameter) Any thoughts on possible ID's. I think that the first one might be a remota, but I doubt the second is. It did survive sub freezing temps and therefore ??could not be pacifica?? Does l…

palm list by mature height
by flplantguy- 3 replies
Does anyone know of or have a list of palm trees by mature height? Either/or the reproductive height, or final height at old age in cultivation? Im daydreaming a sunken conservatory and those numbers all put in a list would be helpful. I'll make one if not, palmpedia has the numbers mostly just in each category. Then people can plan around their dreams with reality; so many people try seedlings inside only to have it die when it's too large and freezes to death outside. Knowing what to expect in advance may help people make good choices too, or decide it's worth the effort.

it has been so warm in southern cal this past month that all the palms have started growing again. must be the la nina............. What are the U.S. impacts of La Niña? "La Niña often features drier than normal conditions in the Southwest in late summer through the subsequent winter. Drier than normal conditions also typically occur in the Central Plains in the fall and in the Southeast in the winter. In contrast, the Pacific Northwest is more likely to be wetter than normal in the late fall and early winter with the presence of a well-established La Niña. Additionally, on average La Niña winters are warmer than normal in the Southeast and colder than norma…

Licuala something :)

"Whats in a name", many can say, but in the "Palm World", I like to pin down "What Palm" it is so I can find out more about it , like where it comes from, how big it gets, etc etc. Anyway, it has similarities especially down low to Licuala distans ( pic 453 and 454 is distans leaf), the Licuala in Q is the other 2 pics. Does any Licuala fans out there "have this" and can help out with "what" Licuala this is ? Pete

I need to move a lot of palms, different types, from compots to individual pots. These palms are all destined to go in the ground, in mostly clay loam soils. In the summer they need to be able to handle Louisisana's long hot summer days without having to be watered every day. I am thinking sand, a little clay, and some compost as a mix. If so, could I use regular old builder's/play sand? Should I rinse/wash it? I am open to other suggestions/alternatives. Let your thoughts flow.

Another Chamaerops humilis Vulcano
by PalmatierMeg- 3 replies

Back around 2010 I germinated seeds of this dwarf Chamaerops from an island in the Mediterranean Sea. They were generously sent to me by a palm lover in Rome. I kept and planted about half a dozen seedlings that appeared to show Vulcano traits, which show up across a range. A couple years ago I posted photos of my primo palm on the north side of my garden lot. These photos are of one of its siblings, which shows almost as well. How Does The SoCal Freeze Rate?
by Adam from Oz- 3 replies
I have obviously been following what's been going on with you poor guys in southern California. Now, to scientifically rate it. Just how bad was the freeze? Were record lows recorded? If so, what were the previous records? What were the daytime highs after the cold nights? My newspaper had LA at 4 - 10C (39.2 - 50F) yesterday but I think their recording station is on a surfboard a few metres out to sea. I'm not trying to be morbid. Just trying to get a grip on what happened. If you quote temps, could you do me the favour of converting them to Celsius? I just don't speak Fahrenheit. This will help you: http://www.onlineconversion.com/temperature.…

Can you help me identify this palm?
by Mystery palm- 3 replies
Hi all! I am a new member in Southern California (San Fernando Valley) and would greatly appreciate help in identifying this palm. I had obtained it somehow about 10 or 12 years ago and. As you can see, it is still relatively small at 2-3 feet high and no obvious trunk. It is a fan palm with bluish fronds and what I believe is called a suckering habit as it has a very short trunk and many other plants clustered around it. It has small green fruit. Any ideas on what this is or how to propagate it? I really like it and would like to know more about it. Many thanks in advance!
