   Dypsis Sp "Bef" viable seed

   My Dypsis sp "Bef" produced its first lot of seeds in the summer of 2013. A gave batches of seeds to several local palmtalk members but nobody had success in germinating them. Last summer (2014) it produced zero seeds - absolutely nothing! This year looks like it could be the year I finally get some viable seed? Well, it's looking promising so far.

   Attalea guacayule in the garden. This is the Attalea that grows in the Puerto Vallarta area in Mexico. In fact this palm came from seed collected there.

   This is a follow up to the thread from some months ago regarding injecting (acid, fertilizer, etc...) into the drip system. Here is the old photo of the original wall mount. I have included the portable version I have mounted on a dolly, trailing an IN hose from the hose bib and an OUT hose to hand water.

   Coconuts at Lowes

   I was wondering if 299.99 was a good price for 12 to 14 foot coconuts. Lowes in Riverview FL has some for sale that are quite large. The root ball is wrapped at the bottom and is big. Some even have fruit on them and all have flowers. Seems like a steal to me. One could have a mature, fruiting coconut for around 300 USD as long as they own a flatbed truck and some other heavy machinery to plant it

   Hey, I just got a small Sabal minor a week ago and was wondering if I can still plant it outside. Would it be better to wait for Spring so it can develop roots for a whole growing season or can I still plant it outside now? I am located in the Eastern parts of Austria, near to Vienna. So winters might get cold, but shouldn't drop below -12°C / 10°F.

    well i woke up and got the urge to get myself a couple new palms. after seeing the presentation on madagascar given by Mr. Marcus i figured id add a few dypsis species... The first palm i saw and dont know really any information about is Dypsis saintlucei...with the powdery white crownshaft with little speckles in it i thought it was a must have. hopefully it grows decently in southern california. The second was Dypsis tokoravina... or so the tag said.. it looked a little more like carlsmithii another palms i am not to sure about...it had a heal and looked like it would get big! any info or pictures of some nice specimens of these guys would be appreciated esp…

    When I was in LA a couple weeks ago...I had the pleasure of meeing Dave from So-Cal. Got to see some very cool palms and left with a few goodies one of which was bag full of A. cunninghamia X alexandrea hybrid seeds. This will be my first attempt to try and germinate palms from seed. The seeds are going on their third day of soaking...What's the best method to removing the fibrous husk on the seeds? Thanks in advance.

    Pritchardia experts needed!

    Bought a number of Pritchardia from Jeff Markus and Phil a few years back and put them in pots. Unfortunately, labels were lost and/or faded after a few years. I put several of them in the ground about 4 years ago and two of them have done very well, surviving the 24hrs of 29 degrees and freezing rain about 2 years ago. I was under the assumption that both pictured were "remota" however they are obviously different. The second one has much rounder and bigger leaves (around 4 ft in diameter) Any thoughts on possible ID's. I think that the first one might be a remota, but I doubt the second is. It did survive sub freezing temps and therefore ??could not be pacifica?? Does l…

    Are these Hyophorbe lagenicaulis in this picture? I took this picture at the Pineapple Park on Okinawa back in 2007. There were literally hundreds of these there scattered amongst the pineapple fields.

    Syagrus botryophora

    This is a 6 to 7 month old Syagrus botryophora seedling, germinated last October from seeds sent to me by Gileno. The first leaf is about a foot long! Still waiting on the second leaf... I thought they were faster than that!

    palm list by mature height

    Does anyone know of or have a list of palm trees by mature height? Either/or the reproductive height, or final height at old age in cultivation? Im daydreaming a sunken conservatory and those numbers all put in a list would be helpful. I'll make one if not, palmpedia has the numbers mostly just in each category. Then people can plan around their dreams with reality; so many people try seedlings inside only to have it die when it's too large and freezes to death outside. Knowing what to expect in advance may help people make good choices too, or decide it's worth the effort.

    "Whats in a name", many can say, but in the "Palm World", I like to pin down "What Palm" it is so I can find out more about it , like where it comes from, how big it gets, etc etc. Anyway, it has similarities especially down low to Licuala distans ( pic 453 and 454 is distans leaf), the Licuala in Q is the other 2 pics.     Another potting mix thread, but with a twist

    I need to move a lot of palms, different types, from compots to individual pots. These palms are all destined to go in the ground, in mostly clay loam soils. In the summer they need to be able to handle Louisisana's long hot summer days without having to be watered every day. I am thinking sand, a little clay, and some compost as a mix. If so, could I use regular old builder's/play sand? Should I rinse/wash it? I am open to other suggestions/alternatives. Let your thoughts flow.
