Lemurophoenix a la Marcus revisited
by Geoff- 3 replies

Sadly, I missed this plant in its crimson splendor and even more sadly, I was trying to keep up with Jeff's whirl-wind round-the-garden tour and did not stop to take a photo with a human being next to this palm... it is TALL and huge... looks sort of ordinary in this photo but I assure it is way bigger than it looks... but the crownshaft, though strikingly pale purple, is not it's brilliant red (maybe it needs a new leaf to fall off). But there is still their smaller Lemurophoenix and it looks incredible

Okay, so a few of you may know that I have been dealing with a rodent infestation for many months now. I live out in the country and have neighbours who insist on putting out bread and birdseed, which ultimately attracts rodents... and as a result, I have had serious problems with rodents in my garden and house. I have baited the heck out of my house and garden, but this has not stopped the rodents from chewing through my palm seedlings, tomatoes and pepper plants! Just this week alone, I have lost 2 Chamadorea seedlings and 6 pepper plants to this rodent species, which have had their stems chewed through. Just last night I went outside with a torch and saw 4-5 of t…

Bearded Washingtonia

Me next to a grouping of Washingtonia planted at my brother's old house about 15 years ago in Bushnell, Florida (central Florida just south of I-75 and where the Turnpike starts) Also dug a couple smaller but fruiting Butia palms with beautiful silver-blue coloring and transplanting them to my house in Jacksonville for future mule palm production. Interesting was a Butia next to these that is nearly three to four times larger, though all were planted from three gallons and received the same level of neglect since 2007...

Soft water vs. hard water
by Logolight- 3 replies

I'm trying to start a small garden in my back yard and I'm using "Seed starter soil" for germination. So I pour the soil into the peat pots, and as I attempt to wet the soil, the water just pools on top and doesn't soak in. I took me all of 10 minutes to mix around the soil and finally get it moist enough to sew the seeds. Since dry soil that repels moisture is a continuing problem for me, I'm starting to wonder if it has anything to do with the hard water here in Florida and the way it reacts with the soil. Does anyone know if water type has any affect on the ability to moisten soil? Thanks. Dave

Need palm ID
by PalmatierMeg- 3 replies

I got this little palm from a FL grower last fall. It has struggled ever since. I kept it in a pot and nursed it all winter, spring & summer. It finally put out new fronds so yesterday I decided it would have to hack it (or not) in the shade garden. But in the course of a year I lost its label and am no longer sure what it is. The delicate fronds are yellowish green, the trunk and incipient crownshaft definitely yellow. In the back of my mind I think "Euterpe precatoria". Am I spot on or delusional? Thanks for all input. Natural defence mechanisms of palms against rpw

Any comments or thoughts on the conclusions of following research?(https://www.researchgate.net/publication/298420874_Susceptibility_and_possible_resistance_mechanisms_in_the_palm_species_Phoenix_dactylifera_Chamaerops_humilis_and_Washingtonia_filifera_against_Rhynchophorus_ferrugineus_Olivier_1790_Coleoptera_Curculi)? Based on my own experience, I can say that P dactylifera had been infested occasionally by rpw in my garden. Namely the central stem of the deglet nour cultivar and side shoots of the medjool one. Also the rpw is considered in Middle East a threat to dactylifera commercial groves. How is this compatible with the conclusions of present research? I had…

by Alicehunter2000- 3 replies

Bob Hoxie, VP of Panama City div. of the Gulf Coast Chapter of the American Palm Society recomended the following formula to get rid of mealy bug and other pests on palms. 50/50 mix of Murphys oil soap and mint mouthwash both can be purchased at the dollar store for cheap. My question is........will this work for mealybugs on Ponytail (palms) and does anyone know Bob? His yard is full of interesting palms (also alot of palm hybrids) He also recommended 13/3/13 Lesko fertilizer....anyone have experience with this? thanx

Compared to the other garden, (Morning garden) this evening garden start pom a bare land in january 2012, we ( ands the plants )suffer from the hot sun, but on the top of the land we planted our Bismarckia army. For the rest, it's a race between the growth opt the plants and the shade we can obtain, I hope the Rhopaloblaste we planted or the Actinorhytis will start and enjoy. Close to the artist's workshop, Roystonea is getting fat: our Loxococcus growing nicely, with dark Crinums around: Our Bismarckia army:

Pete's picture shows a valuable distance between those two palms, distance I can copy in my next plantings. these are seedlings we planted in august 2016, afte 1 year in a pot.

Questions about palm seed germination
by Sabal_Louisiana- 3 replies
1. Is it okay to pick up a planted seed from the soil (and then put it back like it was) to inspect it for signs of germination? 2. Can I go by the float test to see if seeds are viable? I'm experimenting with the seeds of Queen Palms, Sabals, Livistona, Washingtonia, paurotis, and Dates. 3. A few of the Queen Palm seeds have 'eyes' like a coconut - does this mean the seed is bad? Thanks, guys.

Hello, I’m doing a landscaping project that needs a 6-10 ft cordyline australis, I’ve searched all over online for a container farm or any place that sells them but I can only find ones in the UK. Does anyone know of a place anywhere in the US that sells the size cordyline I’m looking for?
