Special palm in Amsterdam?
by Christopher Dillman- 1 follower

Wife and I spent a few days walking around the canals of Amsterdam back in July. Morning walks were most ideal to enjoy some solitude, that is before the summer holiday crowds came crashing in after 11am. Never saw a single palm in Amsterdam, except for this one.. Must have been special, because the retailer would unshackle these and wheel em out in giant pots for outdoor enjoyment. Then wheel them back in and locked up at night. Any identification welcomed. Just found these quite curious and highly unusual in my walks throughout Amsterdam.

Sexing Palms with DNA
by oliver- 3 replies

Question for the plant biologists out there. I know that species of palms are starting to become classified according to DNA, but how hard would it be to determine the sex by DNA analysis. It would be nice to know what sex a seedling is before buyiny it. This would be applicable to a number of palm species, but would be really nice for other expensive plants such as cycads. Phil could jack up the price of his baby Microcycas if he knew it was a female, and knew I had a male. Same goes for palms. A dealer could easily justify increasing the price on a pair of Bismarkia for instance, if they were known to be male and female.

In the Morning garden (semi-shady place) we are used to play with the light and sun rays coming through the tree-canopy. So we planted more Adonidia merrillii "Yellow form" and one variegated form. We'll see what happens.

Help with Euterpe oleracea
by GMann- 3 replies
I planted two of these Euterpe oleracea before Christmas. Both had one large trunk and 2 suckers on each. The 2 main trunks seem to be surviving, even though the older leaves turn brown very fast. But the suckers seem to be doing very bad. On one plant both of the suckers are brown and looking basically dead to be blunt, and on the other one of them is brown and dead looking and the other is surviving and growing. (Pics attached) I think when I bought them the guy told me something about along the lines of "if the suckers die because of cold damage then just chop them down to the ground level and they will grow back again". At the time I wasn't really paying attentio…

Parajubaea

I have been growing these two palms for about three years, originally from two seperate sources and apart from the obvious size of the seed ( which was still attached to the palm at the begining ) can somebody tell me the distinction between the two. The largest I have are about 1.4m from the base of the trunk and appear identical in every aspect apart from the fact that the microcarpa seem a little slower growing. What is the distinction and when will it happen ? Gracias

Howea palm help
by daybora- 3 replies
Hello group, I manage the tropical dome at the Missouri Botanical Garden in St. Louis, Mo, USA. I have a Howea palm, at least 40 years old according to our records, that has developed a lean. It's about 40 foot tall, and the crown is leaning over, towards the northeast. I've had plants lean to the southwest, towards the light before, but this is not the case here. attached are some pictures. Any ideas? Is it old age?

Historical palm ID?
by radicalis- 3 replies
Hi All, Can anyone identify the palm featured in this century-old photo? Is it just a Trachycarpus that has gotten a bit etiolated from growing indoors, or could it be a Cryosophila or Thrinax or something like that? Apparently my great-grandfather bought it for $700(?!) sometime around 1917, and the photo would have been taken in New York not long after that. He was not a plant collector as far as I know, so I assume it would have been something that was relatively common (if overpriced!) at the time. Appreciate your expertise.

Experienced, yet novice advice

All, I really enjoy everyone's "home grown" pictures of their private slices of paradise. But one thing that I continue to note in some photos are how some let the grass grow right up to the trunk of a palm. Remember that grass is a thief. It robs the soil of irrigation, oxygen, and nutrients....essentially leaving less for your palm. I have mulched my ENTIRE yard, front and back, leaving all too much sod for my neighbors to mow, edge, and fret over. Pull the sod back to the drip line of your palm. The drip line is the widest diameter of the fronds as if rain were dripping from the outermost tips of the fronds. Mulch this entire area, leaving a small gap betw…

Lemurophoenix a la Marcus revisited
by Geoff- 3 replies

Sadly, I missed this plant in its crimson splendor and even more sadly, I was trying to keep up with Jeff's whirl-wind round-the-garden tour and did not stop to take a photo with a human being next to this palm... it is TALL and huge... looks sort of ordinary in this photo but I assure it is way bigger than it looks... but the crownshaft, though strikingly pale purple, is not it's brilliant red (maybe it needs a new leaf to fall off). But there is still their smaller Lemurophoenix and it looks incredible

Okay, so a few of you may know that I have been dealing with a rodent infestation for many months now. I live out in the country and have neighbours who insist on putting out bread and birdseed, which ultimately attracts rodents... and as a result, I have had serious problems with rodents in my garden and house. I have baited the heck out of my house and garden, but this has not stopped the rodents from chewing through my palm seedlings, tomatoes and pepper plants! Just this week alone, I have lost 2 Chamadorea seedlings and 6 pepper plants to this rodent species, which have had their stems chewed through. Just last night I went outside with a torch and saw 4-5 of t…
