Hyophorbe indica maybe?
by WaianaeCrider- 3 replies
This was bought years ago from a big box store w/a crazy name I never heard of and have forgotten. I believe it was a few people on the FB page that thought it was Hyophorbe indica. What do you guys think. That white pole is my palm measuring stick. I took a 6' length of bamboo and cemented into a 1 gallon pot. I then spray painted it white and marked off the foot points. It has flowered in the past but some how I don't have any pictures.

Lanai Container Garden Palms, 12-28-20

Today warmed up for the first time in over a week to nearly 80F. All my container palms from the lanai have been trapped inside since Christmas Eve and starting to show the effects of a dark, dry house. Before I let them free I swept and pressure sprayed the lanai for the first time in nearly a year to get rid of grime and spilled soil. Then put out all the palms and gave them a gentle shower and watering. Finally, I took the following photos, their last for 2020. Container Palms on Lanai, Cape Coral, FL, Dec. 2020

Potted Lipstick Palm Set Up
by GMann- 3 replies
Is this the right set-up for a baby potted lipstick palm: In filtered sun/shade, in a deep saucer with 1-4 inches of standing water, depending on rain. Or is there a risk the water will stagnate with such a deep saucer? I am using a deep saucer because I dont know how deep the roots reach within the pot.

Another palm ID
by PalmatierMeg- 3 replies

Hello Palm Lovers, My husband visited his brother in Del Rio, Texas this summer. Brother Bob has had a palm tree growing beside his house for years yet it just reaches the eaves. Bob asked my husband what the palm was but he didn't know either. So he took some photos to show me. I told them what I think it is and they disagreed. So, I am leaving the decision up to experts and posting the photos. A couple of them are blurry - sorry. Photo 1 Closeup of fronds Photo 2 Palm trunk Photo 3 Unripe seeds Photo 4 Palm with house eave Photo 5 Palm and roof What say ye?

Phoenix robellinii

Okay, so, a couple of weeks ago I found this guy at an unnamed nationwide home improvement store, they had 10-inch tropicals for next to nothing and I went snooping in the pile. Anyway, long story short I got it home and repotted it, it's been well watered and seems to be rather happy. Having done my research on this one (after I brought it home....) I realize that this Pygmy Date Palm is going to get rather huge eventually (for a "house" plant). But it is a dense cluster of plants in this pot, I assume for the purpose of being aesthetically pleasing (and that they don't think you'll be able to keep it alive long enough to be a problem). I count Se…

Planting over an old stump
by feef706- 3 replies

I recently cut a popcorn tree down and had the stumb ground. I then built a raised island in the yard and some of it covered the area where the stump was. I got the dirt all spread out how I wanted and went to plant the first plant which is a cidp. I could only dig about a foot and a half down before I hit part of the old stump. My question is if I were to plant this 5gal CIDP over this old stump will it cause problems down the road as it gets larger and possibly unstable if the roots keep running into the old stump or will the stump rot before the tree gets big enough that I have to worry?. Thanks alot, James

Is it possible to identify these young coconut palm varieties?
by Gottagrowemall- 3 replies
My local Asian market sells lots of random plants without anything in the tag and most of the people working there don’t know what they have. Usually I buy their grafted mangos for 40$ each and they never know the variety of the mango scion. Today they had all these coconuts that look different from the ones I see at lowes or Home Depot. They looked similar to my maypan but more leggy or taller before they show character leaves. Could these be a Jamaican tall? The more I look at them I’m thinking maypans

Some Photos

I lurk around here often and have been taking in info but rarely post. I thought I'd share some photos of my palms from last spring (I havent taken photos since then so they are much bigger) with you guys, although they are pretty common for the most part I like um:) In the first is my butyagrus (I think thats how its spelled) from Moultrie Palms in St. Augustine, they have more then doubled in size since this shot. The second are my oldest planted (we have a large sabal that came with the lot) palms (queens) that are about four years from a 3 gallon pot, they have never skipped a beat even when the weather was supposedly 22F overnight. Also there are some robellinis and …

We have a nice crop of 25g Trachycarpus latisectus & T. martianus so I created a set of photos on Flickr with notes that distinguish the two species. They look very similar even in these large tubs, but they look pretty different in the landscape. Hope you find it useful: latisectus vs. martianus .

I planted 7 healthy 3-4 meters Trachycarpus Fortunei Palm trees from pots about 2 weeks ago. They had been growing in pots for about a year. A few days ago I noticed that tips of the leaves turned yellow and brown. All of the leaves are affected except the youngest ones in the middle. Any ideas why? We watered the palms on day 0, 3 and 7 after planting them.

Lost Syagrus schizophylla
by WaianaeCrider- 1 follower

Not long ago someone mentioned Syagrus schizophylla. Then it hit me I think I have one. LOL A bird planted a mock orange right in front of the Syagrus hiding it. There were also about 1/2 dozen seedlings that were going there. Cut them down too. Don't have time to carefully dig out and transplant. LOL Sun is not right for the last picture. I'll try for a better one in the morning if it's not pouring as the weather guys say 70% chance of rain tomorrow. Don't really need any more, weeds are popping up all over the place after a month of 6+ inches of rain. Had to break out the back pack sprayer and Round Up yesterday. Didn't even cover1/2 of the weeds w/two …
