Butia odorata

Germinated in 1994, it has the best fruit I have ever eaten, the seed that produced this specimen came from a tree, where an old house built in the 1800's, on the corner of the first canal on the back road to Cape Kennedy. When the government took over the Cape the house was so far gone, they tore it down and all that was left was the tree, I went back in 1995 to collect fruit, and the tree was dead, I dug this seedling (then) up at the base of the dead tree, just pushing its third leaf, Ed

Single Dypsis ID
by Pedro 65- 3 replies

The trunks are more "lime" green than Cabadae and with many Dypsis hybrids the leaf/frond has a little "twist" as you can see mainly on the specimen on the right. Again, excuse the "weeds" but they are left to their own devices and I visit them "now and again" Look fwd to replies. Pete

Cycad up in a palm?
by Fusca- 3 replies
I was checking out this huge Butia yesterday and saw this. It's common to see Butia volunteers in the old boots but a Cycas revoluta? Never saw that before. Must have been the work of a rat taking a big seed up the trunk to munch on.

This little Livistona is growing in Proserpine (Whitsundays, North Queensland)........... I am trying to identify it.........It seems to be quite a compact grower and its seeds are black and only half the size of other Livistonas.......Any clues??............ Our local species here are L. decora and L. drudei as well as L. australis 'Eungella' at higher elevations.

Pelagodoxa henryana
by realarch- 3 replies

The Pelagodoxa's have been looking pretty good as of late and sharing is a good thing. Two of them are more exposed to wind than the other one and appear a bit more 'tattered', but overall seem happy. The amazing thing is how little soil these three are growing in and the roots must have found some fractures in the blue rock they are sitting on. Hey, when all you have is rocks, you make gravel........or something like that. Mulching really helps too and the growth and overall health is noticeable after a fresh batch. Tim

Does anyone have any success with this palm in a greenhouse or indoor setting? What about any pictures of it growing near you, if you have it in your area?

I purchased 5 seeds of it on RPS, thinking I made a steal when they were the last ones in stock! Unfortunately I didn’t realize that also means they’re probably the oldest seeds from the harvest, probably sitting around for months with the embryos left to toast. I’m aware this is one of the most difficult species to germinate. Considering the additional delay period, are there any unique ways I could get a better chance at sprouting here? I did once see a tip on here where you find the largest “eye” of the three on the seed (since it’s related to Cocos) and place it on the bottom underground. Oh, and it’s been 10 days since I ordered and it’s still “proce…

confirming ID for two palms
by miamicuse- 3 replies

I need some help confirming the ID of two palms in south Florida. I will describe one in each post. This palm is about 30' tall, solitary. This picture was taken earlier this week, and as you can see, it's producing fruits this week. Here is a picture of the base of the trunk. Here is a picture of the red fruits. I have a tape next to them for scale. Is this a Adonidia merrillii?

Hyophorbe indica maybe?
by WaianaeCrider- 3 replies
This was bought years ago from a big box store w/a crazy name I never heard of and have forgotten. I believe it was a few people on the FB page that thought it was Hyophorbe indica. What do you guys think. That white pole is my palm measuring stick. I took a 6' length of bamboo and cemented into a 1 gallon pot. I then spray painted it white and marked off the foot points. It has flowered in the past but some how I don't have any pictures.
