Palms in group ? If yes, how ?
by Mangaratiba- 3 replies
My seedlings are going to be big enough to be transplanted soon in pots, I wonder if it is worth planting them in groups (species by species, no different species together), in the same pot, to get the maximum visual effect. Note that I live in France, so they will live forever in pots. Here are the candidates : Cyrtostachys renda : 5 seedlings Dypsis baronii black stem : 4 Euterpe edulis orange crownshaft : 3 Chamaedorea plumosa : 2 Question 1 What would be the best number ? What about suckering species cyrt. renda and dypsis baronii BS ? I’m OK to remove suckers… Or not ! Question 2 What would be the bes…

Palm tree roots lifting brick planter around pool
by Chad(Louisiana)- 3 replies
I have 3 planters incorporated next to my swimming pool- They measure about 6 ft wide, 4ft long and 2 ft high- We planted Sylvester Palms and they are absolutely beautiful- Last year we noticed 1 of the planters raising up on on edge and realized the roots had gotten between the brick and the concrete- I dug down only to find roots everywhere so I cut them back and backfilled the dirt- This year it appears the whole planter box is starting to raise and if not taken care of will be destroyed by the roots. I have a couple of questions 1. Should I just pull them up and plant something else?( if I do that I will have to get a small crane for 1 due to its size and placeme…

How hot is too hot?
by www.dadluvsu.com- 3 replies

Just curious, generally speaking, how hot is too hot? Most of the stuff I'm growing is pretty tropical in nature (I think!)... I just peaked at the thermomter in the shadehouse and it reads 107ºF and 40% humidity... everything is wet in there... Anyone ever cooked a palm due to overly high temps? If things are kept wet enough can't these plants take high temps into the 110's??

I moved one of my palms indoors for the winter but I'm having a continuous problem with mold on the soil. I keep spraying the mold with Daconil but the mold returns within a week. It's a one Gal. pot which has a mix of pine chips with the soil. So is it insects or what? Thanks. dave

Hello everyone! So this is my very first post since joining palmtalk! My name is Von, im 25, and i live in Nacogdoches Texas. I absolutely LOVE palm trees, although I must admit I don't have many "exotic" species, most of my collection is comprised of the "regulars"... Sabal minor, sago, Mexican fan, euro fan, canary island, etc. Since we sit right on the cusp of zones I'm pretty limited because one year temps may stay warm through winter and then the next year we will fall into a deep freeze that kills everything, and I am NOT a potted-plant-person. I religiously try to get plants out of pots and into the ground as soon as possible. However, the point of my …

pruning rattan palms
by kristof p- 3 replies

i've heard that rattans can be pruned to the hight you want them to be but i dont fully understand this. does this means that when you cut, for example, a stem that is 3m high in half that it wil resprout from the place were you have cutted it back. or do they mean that you can cut the main stems and keep the smaller ofshoots? i have a Plectocomia himalayana growing but when it wil reach the 5/6m mark i can not protect it anymore. it would be great if i could cut it back to lets say 2 a 3 meters high and that it wil grow again from there...

ID please!
by msporty- 3 replies

This is a palm from my friend's house in Orange County, CA. He bought it as a "Ptychosperma sp" and it has grown well in filtered light and has great cold tolerance. We figured (incorrectly) that we could identify the species as it grew bigger. Unfortunately, it has only gotten more confusing with time and now we're wondering if it's a Pytchosperma at all (leaflets are not premorse). Hopefully, we can get an ID and then we can buy a few more. Bonus, if you can tell me a botanical term to describe the distal leaflets pointing backwards, towards the crownshaft. We felt that would be a key to identify the palm, but no botanical term came to mind.

Spots on Palm leaf ethnographic basketry toys
by Maria Paula- 3 replies
Hi, I'm currently studying some ethnographic basketry toys from Argentina, weaved from diffferent species of palm leaves. I've observed two different kinds of spots on some of them and since I'm by no means an expert I thought I might ask you about them. The first picture shows some dark spots that might be fungi, I was wondering if this looks like a palm disease that you are familiar with? It could be helpful to know if this was something already present in the plant material or if it was attacked after its manufacture. The second picture shows some reddish spots which are much flatter and irregular than the previous ones. I've observed this particularly on the more yell…

There has been quite a bit of talk about the IPS biennial in The Dominican Republic but not a word about the tour to Cuba immediately after. Not to touch on a sensitive topic, but is anyone heading over to Cuba to check out what must be a lot of palms. Imagine C. cowellii, fallenese, macroglossa, baileyana and hospita in habitiat. Any takers? Robert

Newport Beach, CA - Where to go to see some nice palms?

Hey guys, I'm making a trip down to Newport Beach later this month and I was wondering where I should go to check out some nice palms. I'm just looking for some nice public botanical gardens or something like that. I won't have a lot of time, but I'm guessing there's gotta be a pretty good place to go for a short visit (in or near Newport Beach).

Value of mature coconut palms?
by ThunderSRQ- 3 replies

Just wanted to inquire if mature coconut palms are worth enough that someone would come get them (for free) -- I know developers like their tropical look. There is a waterfront condo being torn down that has 3 of them on the property and they will be destroyed in the demolition process, so please let me know if anyone here wants more info. and/or has any referrals to potentially interested individuals. Thanks...

JUBAEA Discussion
by PalmGuyWC- 3 replies

This has been an unusually cool spring in N. Calif, and only in the past week have my night time minimums crawled above 50 F (10C). I have 4 large Jubaeas and one has been blooming for several years. I noticed about a week ago that the blooming one is pushing out two bloom spathes, and they are about half emerged now. I'm curious to know at what stage the Jubaeas are in bloom growing in San Diego along Mission Bay? Since you have warmer temps. in S. Calif., I'm wondering if the flowering is ahead of or about the same stage as mine. Normally, I would have Butias blooming by this time of the year, but only a few are pushing out their first bloom spathe. I used to think i…

Quick Question about some yellowing on old fronds
by FallbrookCA- 3 replies
Just a quick question, is this type of yellowing normal on a leaf thats over two years old? I planted this palm at least two years ago, but I have just recently planted grass, and installed a sprinkler system. So I'm assuming its normal since the new leaves look great, but maybe its a nutrition defieceny? Sorry if it seems like a stupid question, its my first home, first time planting palms, so just checkin.
