fuzzy stuff in seedling pots
by Lucinda- 3 replies
Today I found some fuzzy stuff that looks something like cotton on top of the soil in some of my seedling pots. They are in the darker part of the shade house. Many species, but not all plants in each group are affected. Temps here (SW Florida) have been 80F-ish during the day, 65F at night. Windy, but no rain. What is this stuff? What caused it? Will it kill my plants? What should I do. Needless to say, I'm petrified!! Suggestions/cures will be greatly appreciated. Lucinda Haven't figured out, yet, how to load a picture

Dypsis pulchella ?
by Morabeza- 3 replies

Aloha palm folks. I have really grown to love this species, acquired as Dypsis pulchella from Jeff Marcus in his 2007 offering. I would be interested to hear from others who are also growing this. It has been one of the easier to grow understorey Dypsis for me in Honolulu, more tolerant of the hot aridity so long as it has shade and ample water and protection from the tradewinds head on. Pictures: I donated this plant to Lyon Arboretum in January and I think it will do very well there.

Butia odorata

Germinated in 1994, it has the best fruit I have ever eaten, the seed that produced this specimen came from a tree, where an old house built in the 1800's, on the corner of the first canal on the back road to Cape Kennedy. When the government took over the Cape the house was so far gone, they tore it down and all that was left was the tree, I went back in 1995 to collect fruit, and the tree was dead, I dug this seedling (then) up at the base of the dead tree, just pushing its third leaf, Ed

Fallbrook California - so many growers there. whats the story of the palm mecca of the southwest ???? "Fallbrook is an unincorporated community in northern San Diego County, California. The Fallbrook census-designated place (CDP) population was 30,534 at the 2010 census, up from 29,100 at the 2000 census. Fallbrook's downtown is not on any major highway route. It is 6 miles (9.7 km) west of Interstate 15 or 5 miles (8.0 km) north of State Route 76. Fallbrook is situated immediately east of the U.S. Marine Corps' Camp Pendleton. Single Dypsis ID
by Pedro 65- 3 replies

The trunks are more "lime" green than Cabadae and with many Dypsis hybrids the leaf/frond has a little "twist" as you can see mainly on the specimen on the right. Again, excuse the "weeds" but they are left to their own devices and I visit them "now and again" Look fwd to replies. Pete

Some of the biggest I have ever seen in Florida, look to be doing very well for the area, the gravel must drain well which helps a bit. https://www.google.com/maps/@28.4889132,-82.6627379,3a,44.6y,269.54h,99.73t/data=!3m6!1e1!3m4!1sjUa-bwWydE7r2ivbXfJwpw!2e0!7i16384!8i8192

Cycad up in a palm?
by Fusca- 3 replies

I was checking out this huge Butia yesterday and saw this. It's common to see Butia volunteers in the old boots but a Cycas revoluta? Never saw that before. Must have been the work of a rat taking a big seed up the trunk to munch on.

This little Livistona is growing in Proserpine (Whitsundays, North Queensland)........... I am trying to identify it.........It seems to be quite a compact grower and its seeds are black and only half the size of other Livistonas.......Any clues??............ Our local species here are L. decora and L. drudei as well as L. australis 'Eungella' at higher elevations.

Pelagodoxa henryana
by realarch- 3 replies

The Pelagodoxa's have been looking pretty good as of late and sharing is a good thing. Two of them are more exposed to wind than the other one and appear a bit more 'tattered', but overall seem happy. The amazing thing is how little soil these three are growing in and the roots must have found some fractures in the blue rock they are sitting on. Hey, when all you have is rocks, you make gravel........or something like that. Mulching really helps too and the growth and overall health is noticeable after a fresh batch. Tim

I purchased 5 seeds of it on RPS, thinking I made a steal when they were the last ones in stock! Unfortunately I didn’t realize that also means they’re probably the oldest seeds from the harvest, probably sitting around for months with the embryos left to toast. I’m aware this is one of the most difficult species to germinate. Considering the additional delay period, are there any unique ways I could get a better chance at sprouting here? I did once see a tip on here where you find the largest “eye” of the three on the seed (since it’s related to Cocos) and place it on the bottom underground. Oh, and it’s been 10 days since I ordered and it’s still “proce…

confirming ID for two palms

I need some help confirming the ID of two palms in south Florida. I will describe one in each post. This palm is about 30' tall, solitary. This picture was taken earlier this week, and as you can see, it's producing fruits this week. Here is a picture of the base of the trunk. Here is a picture of the red fruits. I have a tape next to them for scale. Is this a Adonidia merrillii?
