Planting Parajubaea torallyi vt in Real Clay. 1 2 3

Hi All, This palm has a history. J. Australis bought seeds about 15 years ago and gave them to me to germinate. A few weeks ago, after the near-death experience of my little tor tor in the front, I got Jo's spare spare that I had germinated through manipulation and "favours". Here it is, "home" again after all that time. Needs to be put into the ground: I don't have soil. I have muck called clay that is high in nutrients but low in interest in letting water pass through it. I dug a deep hole in it over a period of weeks, put Claybreaker in it filled the bottom of the hole with bags of compost and put together a rather large garden bed. Then I bought …

Searle Brothers Nursery, Inc. & The Rainforest Collection® presented the... Spring '14 - Plant Extravaganza! March 7th - 16th, 2014 Before the Spring 'Ganza could begin, there was a weather issue we had to contend with. Prior to the first weekend, the week or so leading up to it, there was mass media coverage of this one bad front that was expected to move through the area. Those of you in Florida should remember it clearly. They were not sure if it was going to hit Thursday, late Thursday night or Friday morning or how long the rain would last. We watched the weather reports and waited hoping the first Friday was not going to get rained out... …

SO, as usual you will have to deal with my usual "lack of photo's and skills" but you can get some of the flavor of a Full day of Palmyness... First stop was at the 30+year old garden of Jim Wright. Some of my racing friends from my "past life" and my avatart photo have been getting more interested in Palms lately. So I invited them to a tour..She made it, he couldn't. So Leslie stands in front of Jim Wright's schizolobium (sp)? for scale. Her hubby Mark, is a big fan of these and planted one in the front yard last year. Here is looking around from Jim's rooftop orchid greenhouse...

why do people hate palm trees? 1 2 3

I don't understand why people hate palm trees so much. Tropicals have falled out of favor in the landscape world. http://www.dmagazine.com/publications/d-home/2010/september-october/why-does-dallas-need-palm-trees http://missionviejo.patch.com/groups/leslie-eskildsens-blog/p/bp--oso-creek-trail-is-a-mission-viejo-treasure-but-w5b809e7cec http://ireallyhatemiami.blogspot.com/2009/06/palm-trees-whats-point.html?m=1 Apparently even Darwin thought palms are ugly: http://www.kew.org/plants-fungi/Jubaea-chilensis.htm

Well, the gardens looking about as good as it's gonna get after a nice growing season so I decided to shoot some pics. I have a small collection in a small yard so you've probably seen most of these palms, so I've thrown in some pics of my ranchhand to spice it up a bit. Enjoy! Palm Planter #1: Front row left to right: A. myolensis, Coccothrinax fragrans, A. cunninghamina right behind the (2) Ptychosperma elegans, Ravenea glauca. Back center: Kentiopsis oliviformis.

With correct spelling, I humbly restart this thread. This is my Sabiaria magnifica that I have had the last seven months on my front porch. It was a one leaf liner that I planted in a one gallon container. It has shed its original leaf and large seed and produced two new leaves. If anyone else is growing this, please post pics!

Speeding up Seed Germination 1 2 3

After spending time to read about palm seed germination and after losing few seeds from mold due to long time of inactivity, and after reading John's posts "tickling the embryo" and "old seed germination", i decided to sacrifice 1 seed of each species i am trying to germinate, to locate the embryo and try the "de-lidding" process to see if it would work. After all, what's the difference of destroying a seed with a knife and losing it from fungus? So let this be a guide to those who are trying to germinate the following seeds with no success so far 1. Hyophorbe lagenicaulis I received the seeds on May 10th 2013 (nearly 7 months). Although they were cleaned from …

Dypsis Mystery 1 2 3
by Urban Rainforest- 99 replies

At one time I thought this palm may be the true Dypsis Ambositrae (it still might be) but everyone is convinced that the palm Jeff Marcus is selling as Dypsis Onilahensis is the true Abositrae. The problem with this is having grown both from seedlings they are NOT the same palm. So are any of you growing this one? I have never seen it in anyones garden. Not even in Jeff Marcus garden and thats where it came from! I have had people guess that it's some kind of weird triangle or Leptocheilos hybrid among other things. So what do you experts think it is? Just don't say Decipiens . Here is a few pics from 3 years ago.

So many Carpoxylon, so few grown to their potential... 1 2 3

I will start by saying I'm not the biggest fan of this palm. In my palm snobby opinion, Carpoxylon is going the way of the foxtail; very rare and highly desired in its introduction to cultivation, only to turn into a now common palm hardly grown to its potential. Don't get me wrong--the story of Carpoxylon is a great one--once thought extinct, and now assured of it's survival due to some amazing photos in habitat and in Hawaii. Having said all that, I am encountering these palms more and more in the common landscape. Judging by some of the pictures you see on the internet, you might think that's a good thing. However, when the requirements of this palm are not met, the re…

Marojejya 3 different forms! I’m sure that others have noticed that there seems to be 3 different forms of Marojejya we all know Marojejya darianii with its massive entire leaves, and is quite fast growing under the right growing conditions, it also has a distinctive seed that can be easily recognized. And then we have Marojejya insignis which is often sold as M. darianii it’s seed is quite different to it’s brother M.darianii both these palms can look very similar as small plants and if you had not seen the seed it would be very hard for most to tell the two apart, the only way that I can tell them apart besides the seed is that M.insignis has some red coloration to t…

Ravenea glauca from Andringitra 1 2 3

One of the plants that I was looking forward to seeing in habitat was Ravenea glauca. As of right now there are two areas to see Glauca, one is Isalo where they grow in the canyons and make for the famous photo for palm lovers. In talking to Dransfeld, what we knew as Glauca will most likely become a new species. The second location is to go to the Andringitra area. This is where I just came back from and was excited to post some photos and details on this beautiful plant. Having seen both now, in my opinion it is easy to see they are two separate species. In Adringitra, there are two areas to view them - both require a 25 km jeep trail drive to Camp Catta. Onc…

As you may have read in some of my earlier posts, I had responded to a newspaper ad for 2 "free" Washingtonia Palms. Well after a month of hassle of trying to get the first palm company to dig these babies out.....I finally found another company who got it done! Here is the two palms resting comfortably at their former home.............not knowing life as they knew it was about to change.

I thought this would be a great place to share and document the growth of my cool weather palm garden on the northeast side of the Big Island of Hawaii. I am located at about 2400' and get about 60-80' of annual rainfall. Summer weather is highs of 80-85 and lows of 65ish. Winter weather is highs of 75-80 and lows about 55-50 but I did see a night at 45 about a month ago. I'm a bit colder than I was hoping and that may limit some of the palms I can grow but I do have amazing deep soil that I'm not use to coming from Phoenix AZ and then Kona. I can dig 3' down in 5 minutes and not hit a rock and only need a shovel to do so. I have been collecting palms for the past 2…

Spear pull on beccariophoenix alfredii 1 2 3

All the beccariophoenix alfredii growing on the hill here made it through the Winter in a splendid fashion, super healthy, all are pushing new growth. However, the large alfredii I planted out in the open at the bottom of the hill as an experiment to expose it to cold has spear pull. Proof to me that this is not a very hardy palm. It was exposed to 26F down there. Bummer!!! Me thinks this might be a USDA 10a palm after all.
