Hey guys. Long time since ive posted. I just noticed somthing alittle weird happining with my majesty palm. Im not sure whats going on. From what I understand these guys like a lot of water. Ive got him on a drip that runs for a half hour every other night. I also water it by hand pretty often. I dont think the problem is a lack of water. but I could be wrong. Can You over water a majesty palm ? Any idea whats going on here ?

Help w/ mystery sabal palm identification; Florida...?
by Dunedin Steve- 1 follower

Any guesses on what kind of Sabal this guy might be..? Got him at a palm show in SoFla way back when. Put him in the ground about ten years ago. I always thought it was a Causiarum, but not sure. Really wide and sloooow, but blooms regularly. Dark greenish-gray, almost. Similar shape to Bismark in background. Old growth has neat kinda "crossed-fingers" pattern, if you're looking down from the top. Sure doesn't look like any other common Sabals I see around town... Thx, Steve

Orlando area palm nursery recommendations?
by Oviedo_z10b_lol- 4 replies

New guy here. Do any of my fellow central Floridians have any suggestions for good palm tree nurseries in and around Orlando? Somewhere with a solid selection and perhaps some rare or z10 palms. Lukas Nursery is nice, albeit a bit overpriced. Apparently MB Palms is the go-to? (Selfishly, the primary reason I ask... I’m looking for decent sized A. Cunninghamiana, B. Alfredi, and A. Engleri) BUT, I’m always keeping an eye out for new places to waste an afternoon and a few bucks. Thanks in advance.

How does one tell 5 gallon jubaea from beccariophoenix alfredii? I have inadvertently commingled some, and while there are noticeable differences when these palms get larger (such as yellow petioles for the beccariophoenix alfredii, and the jubaea fronds and leaflets are stiffer), for smaller plants I'm having difficulty telling them apart. Does anyone have some easy keys for differentiating them? Marc

I have a series of Veitchia joannis planted next to a wood fence, and one of them with a west exposure but didn't have the building sheltering it took a beating last weekend when a storm blew through South Florida. All the fronds got blown off or broken. There is a new spear, with a slightly brown tip. Is it in serious trouble?

Hi folks! I have a bunch of these seedlings that someone unloaded on me. Now, I know this is a relatively new variety and I've only just begun my search for information on this one. I figured I'd ask here first if anyone has any info or links I can take a look at to give me more info. Ive read a few things comparing them to T. princeps, but I really don't know. So, if anyone's got any info. for me, please share & it's very much appreciated!! Thanks in advance... Pat

Transplanted Phoenix Canariensis
by Jose34- 4 replies
Hello. I got this Phoenix Canariensis transplanted in clay soil about 6 weeks ago I just released fronds and had to cut some of them cos they were dry or leaning to one specific side. After 6 weeks of transplant they look like this. Do they look like they would make it? I just added fertilizer now and some neem oil to prevent weevil or other pests. I would appreciate advices in case I’m missing something to make them stronger. As you can see the one I trimmed is the one to the left and a little smaller. I know I have to protect them from cold. Thank you for all your advices

Help with Pindo Palm in NC
by palmkiwi- 4 replies
Hi there, I would love some help if anyone has a few minutes. We moved into a house with 4 Pindos in November of last year (Wilmington NC). One has struggled the whole time with stunted fronds, and a generally unhealthy appearance. I've tried fertilizing it, and watering it (we have sandy soil so I figure I cant over water). Its looks like its now dying ,and I want to make sure what ever afflicted it does not get the others. The other 3 are flourishing btw. The top crown frond is brown, and has not grown in 8 months. The 5 of so fronds it has have not grown at all, and have rapidly declined in the last week. The lower frond stumps peel off the tr…

Unexpected rapid Jubaea germination
by CodyORB- 1 follower

Last month I began round 2 of Jubaea chilensis seed germination. The first round (described here: https://www.palmtalk.org/forum/index.php?/topic/65681-jubaea-germination-update-5-months-other-cocoides-and-a-c-macroglossa/&tab=comments#comment-958127) was a partial success and I wound up with 3 healthy, lasting seedlings. I sold 2 of them (BIG mistake!) and one of them lasted outside for almost a year in a pot full of perlite (story here: https://www.palmtalk.org/forum/index.php?/topic/66306-repotted-my-jubaea-seedling-in-florida/&tab=comments#comment-964419. It was bulletproof in the winter. It kept growing despite receiving no water but rainfall every 1 or 2 wee…

I was cleaning up some old growth at the base of this Marojejya darianii in anticipation of putting it in the ground soon, and as soon as I remove some old leafbases, I discovered this shot of hidden color. A new frond is going to open soon, so I was expecting to enjoy the pink blush across the newly opened frond, but now I don't have to wait for color from this palm.

I am so happy!

Yes, i am very happy because after 6 months, my Neo storckii seeds are germinated. I was reading that these seeds are difficult to germinate but i am a lucky man. And yes, i know, they will be impossible in my climate but may be in a few years, thanks to global warming, they will grow in my garden. I was reading bad experiences in California, but i was reading in a book that here in Spain, at least one is growing healthy in climate like mine, may be warmer in the lows temps but my place has better max temps. Well, it is only a dream, who knows!!!

Rhapis humilis
by chris.oz- 4 replies
- 2.3k views
One of my clumps of R. humilis has just flowered, and I have discovered its male. According to a number of authors [ Jones: Palms throughout the world, Riffle and Craft : Encyclopedia of cultivated Palms ] female plants of this species do not exist. In the recent revision of Rhapis in Palms June 2003, it is stated that female plants do exist in China at Mt. Omei and Lungcho. Recently, seed was offered for sale through RPS. I believe this palm has a very high degree of horticultural value, it tolerates much more sun in temperate latitudes than R. excelsa, it grows taller, so can be used as a very effective screen, and most of all it grows at least 2 ti…
