New Butia x Parajubaea cocoides
by Tropicdoc- 4 replies
- 1.2k views
Got my new babies. High dollar palms, so I want advice. They are Butia paraguayensis x Parajubaea cocoides. I transplanted them from root bound 1 gallons to 25 gallon tubs. They receive about 3-4 hours of sun a day. I started watering them about 1 gallon of fresh water from my pond daily. It is in the high 80s during the day and high 60s at night. I was thinking of wrapping the pots in reflective insulation to help keep the soil cool. I will grow these until they can no longer fit under my pop-up greenhouses that I use in winter, so they won't see freezing temps. Then I want to plant them poolside (I have yet to move into my permanent house and dig pool BTW)

Anyone growing Pholidocarpus macrocarpus
by Mike Evans- 4 replies
- 1.1k views
Is there anyone growing Pholidocarpus macrocarpus? They have very colorful double yellow stripped petiole. They seem to be closely related to Livistona, but more tropical in nature with a hunger for water.. Heavily armed like L. saribus. I noticed that someone posted a pic of one in Pinecrest garden from the Biennial. Here are a few pics of small ones I have. They normally sit in a tray of water. Would like to hear any ones experience with these. Here is one in the Marcus garden. Very beautiful.

I admit I feel totally helpless. There is so much I do not know about the biology of Australian palms, only available knowledge is that Calamus caryotoides is dioecious. Following are the best close up pictures of the flowers on my plant, I could shoot with a non-professional camera.

Pseudophoenix vinifera
by RainForestt Robert- 4 replies

I visited the Dominican Republic two years ago. While there collected some seeds of Pseudophoenix vinifera. The germination rate was extremely good, almost 100%. I gave a few seeds to a friend who, with no experience, germinated most of them. She grew two specimens in her shadehouse that outgrew all my specimens. She then kindly "donated" them to me in exchange for a bismarck seedling. In two years, the P. vinifera have grown to 6 feet from soil line to the tip of the newest leaf. Pseudophoenix vinifera I still have not gotten around to placing my palms in the ground as the house construction project has slowed considerably. I took 3 Carpoxylons and place…

Hyophorbe indica question
by gavilan1- 4 replies
I added this Hyophorbe indica to my meager collection of container palms a few weeks ago, but every time I look at it, I can't decide if it is green form, as it has tinges of orangish color and is not uniformly bright green. It may be too young to differentiate at this point - I just don't know, as I am unfamilar with this species. Any help here appreciated. Thanks in advance.

Do you believe it is prudent and/or proactive to put a little of the fungicide down? I have seen thin, stringy-like fungus beneath the mulch. Background: This palm continues to shoot out new growth but the fronds pretty quickly get this splotchy browning and start to look necrotic. About 3 months ago, I posted in this forum and got some good feedback to plant potassium spikes, which I did. Someone else said to apply a system fungicide. I have fertilized with a good palm fertilizer and continue to use potassium spikes, but the tree just seems weak, in general. Like the fronds seem to be drooping even more than in the past. Thank you for any advice, I am open ears!

The Surprise Flowering
by Kim- 4 replies

During my July visit to the Big Island, Bo had shown me a huge inflorescence that had seemingly appeared out of nowhere on one of his D. prestoniana. At the time it was humming with bees. More recently this September, we stepped out to look at the seeds and realized a second inflorescence on the same palm had appeared, again, seemingly out of nowhere. By then, the first one was forming seeds. The next day, walking the path to my place, I hear a busy humming nearby... bees! Another D. prestoniana had flung forth an inflorescence here as well. Can you see it? From a different angle... ...the flowers were falling steadily to the ground…

Adonidia merrillii Hybrid
by BPK Palm Addict- 4 replies
I have been noticing for some time in lots of nursery’s that the Adonidia merrillii for sale do not look like the old ones in my yard. The leaf base scars are very wide apart making them a very fast grower. I suspect they are really hybrids. I did a little research here on PT and found a little info, most recently from PalmatierMeg. I have put some pics in from one in my yard. It was here when I purchased the property. I allowed some of the seeds to naturally grow as they fell. It is easy to tell just from the trunks they are not the same. Could anyone weigh in and confirm.

I had this little date palm seedling in my garage only getting sun when it was open and was only watered literally four times this Winter. It was tilted and everything and I just straightened it out and put it into the sun. It has a new spear and everything, it looks a lot better than my christmas palms which were in the same situation, that's for sure. Spring cleaning for me is finding plant stuff in my garage, including a ton of old seed that I lost (hopefully that Washingtonia filifera are still good)!

Unknown Windmill Palm ID

New palm owner here. I hope I am posting this in the right area - I recently purchased 4 windmill palms (2 listed as T. fortunei and 2 as just “windmill palm”) and the unspecified ones look a little different in their leaves than the fortunei that I have already planted. Leaves must be younger as they are not opened up as much? Anyway, hoping for an ID on these two: Thank you all! I am so excited about these palms I just want to make sure I know what they are so I can properly care for them. - Garrett in zone 7a

I have 3 palms that I am unsure of.. Any help identifying them would be great. I believe the small one with the dark crownshaft is a New Caledonian palm, and the single tall palm is from the Philippines, but not 100% certain. NOTE The first 2 pictures belong together, then the next 2 and the last one is separate palm,

Palms as weapons
by PalmatierMeg- 4 replies

Hello, fellow palm lovers. The heat and humidity here drives people bonkers but that doesn't usually happen till August or September and it's only June. However, In Deland, FL, a guy tried to rob a convenience store using a palm frond as his weapon (gimme the money or I'll stab you). Fortunately, the store clerk wasn't injured and the robber (already dressed in black/white prison stripes) was captured. What abuse of a poor palm. I hope this link works because there's video, too. Extra points to palmophile who IDs the species. Here's the web address: http://www.local6.com/news/16654677/detail.html

Dear Friends Three pics of a strange palm (is it a palm?) grown from seeds. I have forgotten from where they came. Long time - may be 3 years - this plant grew extremely slowly - or not at all. The leaves came out of a strangely inclined short "stem". Now it has straighten up and, since some months, it's developing better and looks healthy. No spines, coriaceous leaves. What do you mean?
