bismarck update

A couple ofweeks ago I posted some pics of possible bud rot and later of a frond that was getting brown streaks. Kostas suggested the streaks might be root rot or salt build up. Well now the frond is getting much worse but its still growing and its pushing through the bud rot. They areas start out dark brown and then dry out after awhile. I don't know how it could have gotten root rot I let I dry out very good between waterings. The other 2 fronds are fine, it really sucks that it was fine all winter until right before spring hits and it can go back out. I would hate to loose this palm. Thanks in advance for all sugestions and advice Here are some pics of the frond in qu…

Palm Care Advice
by cwd388- 4 replies

Hello Palm Enthusiasts, I am a recent transplant to Florida from Michigan. Obviously in the Midwest we don't have palms, so I am a little perplexed about some of the nuances of caring for palms. Specifically, I have three of the palms in the attached pictures growing right near the front entrance to my house, and there are what I can best describe as "ferns" growing uncontrolled from the base/roots of the palms. These "ferns" drastically impede the front entrance and create a very unsightly, overgrown appearance at the front of my house. I don't know if these "ferns" are a part of the palm tree or a different plant entirely, and I want to know what my options are…

Jubaea in decline, what is happening?
by Phoenikakias- 4 replies
I had planted two Jubaeas very closely together, cause I had been thinking that the older one would not survive. Finally it made it and as the stems of both plants were gradually expanding, I knew that one day they would compete for their lives. Now the smallest one has entered a rapid decline process but I am not sure about the actual causes. Does it get 'ran over' by the bigger one or is it something else like fusarium wilt or infestation by rpw (for last possibility European growers are perhaps more able to answer)?

I gather it's because of some damage at the base of this one of 3. It's a bit to elevated and could used a boost of soil. Be interesting to see if it actually develops.

Palms of Izmir?

When I was in Izmir, Turkey a few years ago, many of the main boulevards were lined with tall palm trees with a dark brown wood and dark green palmate (I think) fronds. I've attached a photo of them. Would appreciate knowing what they were. (In the photo, it's the tall trees to the right, not the small palm on the left.) Thanks!

I have opened a Cafepress Store for the International Palm Society and am eager to get some IPS merchandise available for everyone to purchase so we can show our support for PALMS!!! But, we all need to agree on a logo for the promotion of our society and it's cause, hence the artwork contest. In this thread I would like to get everyone to submit artwork that they feel appropriate for this use. The winning logo will be used to represent our society on shirts, hates, stickers, etc... all around the globe! Out of all the artwork submitted, a group of volunteers will select no less than 3 and up to 10 of the entries. Those final submissions will be posted here on Palmt…

Afternoon sun over Caesia

I'm so lucky to have a Pinanga caesia growing at home, this angle with the afternoon sun struck me as photo post worthy. It has some sun protection from the Dypsis lutescens, plus that whole look is kind of cool in my palmble opinion.

Arenga species ID

This Arenga in the garden looks very similar to the A. engleri, except for the irregular spaced and clustered leaflets. The seed look identical also. Anyone have a real ID? Here are pics of the regular Arenga engleri for reference.

Is anyone of those young plants Arenga tremula?
by Phoenikakias- 4 replies
There are 6 plants growing each three in a single pot. The seed, where they grow from, is supposed to be from Arenga tremula. I admit that I am entirely clueless as to how a genuine Arenga tremula would look like at this age. So please could you recognize among those 6 plants the possible appearance of tremula?

Dictyosperma album from Seed
by bgifford- 4 replies
- 1.2k views
Hey everyone. i hope everyone had a great start to the new Year. A friend of mine brought me some Dictysperma album seeds from her Sisters Tree in Florida. I have been soaking them to get the fleshy part off easier. My questions are: 1) After I cleaned them, how long do you soak them again? 24 Hours? or longer? 2) What method of germination works best? I have a Heat mat for seedlings. 3) Once germinated, what medium is best for the seedlings? I will document the progress. And as always..... Thanks for all the insight.

Dypsis ovobontsira in FL
by palmtodd- 4 replies

Anyone else having luck with this species in FL ? Also curious how it's growing for people in CA. It seems like a winner. Got some pics of my biggest D. Ovo opening its colored new leaf. This plant in around 7 foot tall and it definitely picked up speed since I planted in full sun a few years back from a 3gal. I have 2 others in pots that were kept in filtered light / moderate shade and they are only about 2-3 ft tall. Even though it's handling the sun I think I'm going to plant a King or Foxtail next to it for at least some protection from future frosts.

I picked up 8 seeds from the massive California Fan Palms in downtown Sacramento Capitol State Park to see if I could grow them from seed. I thought it wouldn't come to much but now all 8 have sprouted. How big should I let them grow before transplanting to their own pot?

A buddy of mine is in Oxnard, CA and took a picture of this gorgeous palm. Because of the fronds, thick fibers and no crownshaft, I think it is an Alfie. Are Ravanea Rivularis like this when unkept from the base?

Dear Terry who doesn't post as much as he used to, kindly sent me some palm photos some time ago. I lured him, and feel bad, as I intended to reward him with seeds which I still haven't forgotten. Anyway, Terry takes great photos in juicy color - I mean, fuji color! Here are some examples all chopped up. Put them back together and see if you can name them all!
