I thought it would be fun to start a thread on my up and coming garden in Vista California. I wasn't planning on doing a thread but I got pressured into by a few PSSC members.. you know who you are...lol My wife and I bought and investment property almost 3 years ago in Vista California. My wife doesn't understand the palm disease like most of my friends so I needed a place to plant a garden where I can grow bigger stuff. I've been officially working in the garden for about 6 months. It's been a very slow project but its finally starting to pay off. I recently started planting palms on the south facing slope in a good micro climate. I've wanted to do this for some…

I was wondering if it would be nice to have an Arizona thread where the few of us Arizona people can directly discuss with each other growing (or trying to grow) palms. I feel that while the input from others in CA and beyond is very helpful it does not always apply to us in AZ. I see people say that this or that palm wants full sun, and while that is the case for CA or elsewhere not too many palms can take full AZ sun. Hoping a few other Arizona people will chime in on this thread and maybe use it for posting AZ specific questions. I will throw out the first questions. I see Mule palms and Parajueba palms recommended for full sun. How many hours are we talking f…

This is a cool palm where one of the potential identifying characters is a swollen but. Know what it is?

I would like this to be a thread where Palmtalkers post cold sensitive zone 10 palms you come across in the Orlando area. The ever-increasing effects of the urban heat island are more evident each year. The first is an updated photo of the Cocos nucifera growing at Smashburger near downtown.

With all the origin threads going on I figured what a great way to start the new thread. This new thread will start off with how/where I got my kickstart into the nursery business and my love of plants. I am not going to dump a 100 pics at a time, we will work on this little by little, we have all year to get it done, and the way 2008 is starting off looks like I am going to have some really great projects going on.

Hello! As you may have read in many topics of mine,i have a house in Pyrgos which belonged to my grandparents till a few years ago when they both passed away Anyway,a year ago we(my parents and i) started fixing the house and did a renovation to it...Now finally the time has come to plant the relatively small garden it has...I hadnt done anything with it before due to the dirty jobs from the house and the soil needing a thorough clean up by hand picking the MANY garbage it has scattered eveywhere...To these, add the scrap cement, paints and others from the recent house renovation, and you end up with a soil full of garbage and ugly things This had always detered me from…

Today wandering the garden as I often do while taking a break from work I noticed that my Beccariophoenix madagascariensis seems to be starting to put on a little size. I can’t remember exactly when I planted it. It’s been about 6 years I would guess. It was a small 5 gallon. Over those years it has consistently put out new leafs, but it never really seemed to get too much bigger. While still considered small, it seems to finally be putting on some size. 5 gallon bucket in 2nd pic for scale. So what palm in your garden caught your eye today? It doesn’t have to be your favorite, just something that stuck out to you today.

Hello everyone! First of all this is my first time here and wanted to greet everyone, secondly I am just an amateur that started as simply a curious person for palms overall and more specifically coconuts! I have been on Madeira (have a house there and go there 2 or 3 times per year) this summer and took a few pictures of the coconuts located in the marine of Funchal. When I was searching for coconuts one year ago I discovered on this forum that Madeira had some just in front of my nose! It is my belief that this is one if not the northern most region where they survive without extra man care with just the natural conditions (I believe at most maybe watering, don'…

We need a bit of color on the board. Post away! I'll start with some Calyptrocalyx in the garden, all going off at the same time. Understory gems for any garden if they will grow for you. C. leptostacyhs, C. pachystachys, and C. pachystachys 'mottled.' Tim

Dear folks i have illustrated the general method that i follow to seeds germination.. First requisite is freshly picked palm seeds from your neighbour's garden, better still from your friends garden socked it well for 3 days, but keep changing the water daily and the water should not be chill.if you are in cold countries then you will need a thermo flask to maintain a luke warm water to assist in waking up those seeds from dormancy_ and on the final day treat the seeds with mild liquid bleech solution for 30 minutes, after which allow the seeds to air dry before putting it in to the baggie bag containing slightly moist damp-off,peat moss or coco-peat. w…

Inspired by @palmsOrl's thread for Orlando, I'm starting this thread so we can share remarkable palms in the greater Tampa Bay area. What I mean by "remarkable" is a palm that's unusual for the area it is planted. A 10' coconut in Wesley Chapel would be remarkable whereas the same palm in St. Pete Beach would not be. Just use own judgement and err on overposting. The "greater Tampa Bay area" is somewhat ambiguous. For the purposes of this thread, let's go with a very broad definition and include all these areas: Hernando Pasco Hillsborough Pinellas Polk Manatee Sarasota

Jubaea is a stunning palm that I would love to add to my garden, but it's just too hot and wet down here. I do have a JuButia x Butia that is growing nicely toward flowering. I hope to introduce syagrus R. pollen when the time is right to hopefully produce JuButyagrus (waiting patiently while holding empty fertilizer bag)! I have some massive bonsal queens here that will be the pollen donors. The bonsal queen seeds that I got from Eric Anderson at www.seedcoseeds.com produced very bulky queens with the expanded base similar to those in topic "fat bottom girls". Who has a large Jubutyagrus. I would love to see one. Tim

Zone 10a | .29 acre Acquired this property not too long ago and have spent a majority of the time updating the fundamentals as well as the interior while deconstructing the landscape here and there. Now it's time to have a little fun with the landscaping... The goal is to really push the limits with design. My style is modern eclectic. Here is a view of the front of the house where there was once a box hedge... I had cut it down to stumps and reshaped the regrowth into circles for the time being. Everything else was lawn.. I had removed some sections and did temporary flower beds underneath the front windows but it is ready for its next phase. I hav…

Some have claimed the Newport Beach Coconut might be the farthest north in the ground with sustained growth, at around 33 degrees, 37 minutes latitude. Please submit any other farthest from equator claims - be sure to include exact latitude position, north or south.

In August of 2017 my wife and I bought our home in Hilo, Hawaii. This thread will attempt to document the creation of our Hilo garden and also serve as a main thread for me to update over the years with progress pictures. Before moving to Hilo, we enjoyed living in Fallbrook, California. I spent 8 years there building our garden from scratch. We had the privilege of having many visitors come to that garden over the years including a meeting of the Southern California Palm Society. We are currently renting that home out and while many palms remain there, several of the prized palms were moved to some amazing Southern California gardens to better ensure their sur…

Ok I didn't get a good look but I drove by this tree this morning almost certain it is a cocoa. DoomsDave confirmed it as well through text. Here is a picture of it . It is located in south corona California I don't know how it survives but it is also very healthy.
