Small Change to Terms of Service

It has been many years since our current terms of service were updated. Yes, I am referring to that fine print most of us decline to read. The good news is there is exactly one additional sentence and it is just intended to streamline the registration procedures and membership management for our free level IPS membership. Here it is: Registration on PalmTalk.org without an existing membership in our society will constitute joining our society at a free membership level with associated benefits. In appreciation for your attention I will share a palm photo from my farm. Pigafetta , AKA the Black Wanga Palm

New house, first palm!
by ahosey01- 6 replies
I planted the first palm at my new house today. It was a 45 gallon monster with about 3 foot of trunk that had wayyy outgrown its container. Phoenix sylvestris is the species. probably weighed 500lbs. That pygmy palm was there from the builder and is getting ripped out to install a patio, so I don't count it. Edit: Photo working now!

I just received a gift of Ravenea glauca ... I was thinking about planting it out ------- the palm cold tolerance data base lists it to 9A. I would be much obliged for any anecdotal information relative to it cold tolerance --I live in Jax Florida so the climate may be 9A but it is a very different 9A from CA

D. Lafazamanga 1 2

So it’s been 10 months in red solo cups, and all of the Dypsis lafazamanga seedlings and little fragments from floribunda made it. Not too much babying or coddling. Just some fertilizer and water and a fair amount of direct sun. Some variability. I’m about to pot-up. Should I put 2-3 to a bigger pot or leave it at 1, and expect a lot of clumping in the future anyways? Don’t know what to expect in the future. April 29th 2021… 6 seedlings and +3 rando fragments…. Today…. The king of the seedlings….

majesty palm dying
by 2palm- 4 replies

this palm was in the sale rack at lowes when i bought it and it has never recovered the little care that it was given there. it was fine during winter but when we put it outside is went yellow and has started to lean. it has no root rot, it has been fertilized recently, I've checked there isn't fungus, its just not wanting to live. i have already talked about this one a few times and i have not been able to narrow it down to something. im just about to give up with this one. my relatives that have a farm say i should plant it in the ground but im not sure if that will work.

Overwatered Phoenix Canariensis?
by Feng- 14 replies

Hi palm people, I just planted this Phoenix Canariensis in the ground about 2 weeks ago and I have been giving it a LOT of water. I’ve noticed that the leaves are becoming misaligned. Is this because the excess water is causing the frond to become engorged and is this healthy? thanks

This is probably my first post on the forum and thanks for having me. Since I went on my trip to the Philippines I spotted a “Dypsis” looking type of palm and I couldn’t decide whether its Dypsis sp “Mahajanga” or Dypsis Prestoniana. If any of you guys know what type of Dypsis this could be I would be happy to know. Thanks lordbiznezz.👍😁

Lethal Bronzing in the RGV
by ahosey01- 0 replies

Hey Texas guys - I planted this Phoenix sylvestris yesterday. Was a lot of work - don't want to lose it. Do I need to worry about lethal bronzing either a.) down here in the RGV and specifically b.) with Phoenix sylvestris? I assume yes and yes. If so, where do I get the antibiotic injections?

sabal causiarum shriveling up

I posted this in potted palms, but I'm going to try again here because it's an emergency, and I don't know what to do next. I let it sit in water for 30 minutes or so the other day, and it just didn't bounce back, but luckily my other one did. This one isn't bouncing back, and it's starting to fade in color. I'm so worried about it. I don't know if it's ready to be planted out because they both have roots coming out of the bottoms and have been in these bags for 2 years now, I think. I was going to plant them anyway this year, but I don't know if I should just plant it out if that would help or not.

Today wandering the garden as I often do while taking a break from work I noticed that my Beccariophoenix madagascariensis seems to be starting to put on a little size. I can’t remember exactly when I planted it. It’s been about 6 years I would guess. It was a small 5 gallon. Over those years it has consistently put out new leafs, but it never really seemed to get too much bigger. While still considered small, it seems to finally be putting on some size. 5 gallon bucket in 2nd pic for scale. So what palm in your garden caught your eye today? It doesn’t have to be your favorite, just something that stuck out to you today.

Can anyone identify the insects I have on my Pygmy Date palm (Roebelinni)? It looks like there are at least two types and damage to the fronds is occurring. Thank you so much for any help you can provide! I am in Central Florida. I would also like to know how to treat my palm. It looks very unhealthy 😟

Coconut rhinoceros beetle

I have two royals that have been in the ground around 22 years. I treated the first today for Coconut rhinoceros beetle prevention (I hope). with Imicide capsules containing 3 mg each. Hope I drilled deep enough for the liquid to get absorbed and taken up to the crown. Will probably do the next tomorrow as I'm fighting a hernia and bending over hurts. The cost for 24 capsules was $175.95 plus tax. I have 7 pritchardias which will also need treatment. At this price I sure hope I save these. There are at least 16 more large palms, 22 year old palms but so far I don't see damage The one on the right is a Roystonea regia and the one on the left is Roystonea olerac…

Inspire me!

I moved to Brownsville, Texas recently. Solid zone 10a as I understand it, with the occasional unfortunate Texas cold blast. The front yard is mostly grass. I want to keep it that way and grow a few palms in the grass. I like that aesthetic. I have already purchased a large (12ft-ish) Phoenix sylvestris in a 45g pot which will go where the red stick figure palm is. I know it's boring, but Phoenix has always been my favorite genus and I am satisfied by the sylvestris appearance. I am looking for some other ideas for palms to grow on the sides of the driveway, and some small ones in the space between the sidewalk and the street. The grass where the pygmy…

Are the Azores right for coconuts?
by Shoowow- 1 follower

Hello all. The question remains unanswered, but we're getting closer. These two have been with me since last May, always outdoors, protected only from a couple of major wind and rain storms in December (brought indoors). They like the white washed south facing wall. While the little guy on the right is struggling and possibly on its way out, the one on the left is doing well. The winter has actually been cooler than normal, but only slightly, with the Jan monthly average at 59. Feb looks about the same. They are Dutch greenhouse specimens, so I had a tough task keeping them alive from the beginning. If either one makes it they are going on the ground in May…

My sophomore year - road to a personal jungle 1 2

As I have seen others have done I’d like to start a thread to share and follow my own palm growing experience and progress. Hopefully 10 years from now I’ll have a mini jungle to enjoy and be able to look back at the hits and misses here on Palmtalk. Early 2021 was the first year I became aware of my palm obsession and when I started growing and planting palms. I feel like you get a little extra out of the experience if you grow from seed yourself so I try to do that as much as possible however most of the palms I have were already started. So last year I purchased a 5 gal Flamethrower and (2) 5 gal Sylvesters which went into the ground and are doing well. I also picked …
