Brahea dulcis, so small spines?
by Phoenikakias- 4 replies

I got a juvenile plant under this name and turned out desperately slow. Besides petioles are armed with very tiny spines, initially they were almost invisible and one could feel them only by the touch. No they are visually more perceivable and can be caught in a picture, but they are still tiny. Is that a common trait for this sp or only related to certain ecotype(s) or strains?

C. hovomantsina revealed the pale yellow band that will eventually turn green. The very next day, Lemurophoenix halleuxii dropped a frond to spectacular effect. Photos were taken within an hour or two of the event, allowing capture of the saturated colors. Got some color? Show it off here!

Germinating allagoptrea arenaria
by happypalms- 0 replies

I purchased some allagoptrea arenaria seeds from rps and so far quite successful in the germination department to import seeds it’s a long wait from source to getting them to sowing usually 8 weeks or more with customs taking there time and other times clearing them within days of landing in the country with many emails and phone calls involved in the process along with certain fees applicable but it’s all worth it when you’re seeds start germinating I used spagnum moss slightly moist bottom heating 30 degrees Celsius in two sealed plastic bag creating more heat I have used this technique before and it worked well for me

Starting hardscape renovation

Hey all, We purchased our home in 2002, and started doing some landscaping within the first year or so after that. Our backyard is on a slope, which creates a nice landscaping effect, but which is much more difficult to maintain. At the time, I had a lot more time and energy than I had money, so I set about creating two horizontal pathways (razorbacks), one halfway up the hill, and one nearly at the top. On the high side of the upper one I used railroad ties that I “stabbed “ vertically in the dirt to create a bit of a planter bed on the high side. On the middle path, I did something similar, but used all the large rocks that I’ve been digging up throughout the yard…

Is my mule palm dying?
by Klmoon- 1 follower

Hello everyone, I live in Texas (Houston area) I had a couple fan palms die after the 2021 freeze. I had those removed and two mule palms placed last July. The mule palm on the left wasn’t thriving so the company replaced it in October. (So, the palm on left has been in the ground for 6 months and the one in the right has been in ground for 9 months.) we had another freeze in January but I made sure the trees were wrapped. I might be paranoid but I am concerned with the look of them. Any feedback is very appreciated!

Do these Hydriastele benguini "Obi Island" form seeds need to be cleaned before being sprouted? Can I just plant them uncleaned directly into community pots? First time with such small seeds for me. . . .

For some reason this came up in my youtube feed. Do these provide a cool effect or just tacky fakes? If you could afford a 20M place in this location could you not have real, well maintained Washingtonia and just replace them when 5-10 year freezes take them out?

Dumb Germination Questions 1 2
by JohnAndSancho- 41 replies

I've had some seeds (bottle palm and Pinanga Coronata) germinating in community pots on a heating pad since 10/15 and they've done nothing. I'm keeping them moist and misting regularly. They're just planted in crap potting soil because it's what I had - since it's been 2 months with no germination, can I put them in some coco peat in baggies? Also, I had some Chamaedorea Microspadix soaking before cleaning and I guess I forgot about them - they've been in water for a week and uh... This water stinks. I soaked them in H2O2 and cleaned them off today. Should we be cool to throw them in a community pot? I do have more peroxide and copper fungicide if necessary.

Lakeside Palmetum, Oakland 1 2

We were in the San Francisco Bay area over Christmas and stopped by the Lakeside Palmetum on Lake Merritt in Oakland. We had never known of its existence until we joined the Palm Talk Forum and saw it mentioned several times. The palm collection was terrific, good collection of cool weather palms. Unfortunately the garden was in pretty bad shape when we were there, as recent maintenance and upkeep had been minimal. Most of the palms had skirts of dead fronds and the undergrowth was crowded and weedy. To make matters worse, there were few ID tags in the Palmetum. In general, the Oakland Botanical Garden (inside of which the Palmetum is located) didn’t look that w…
