Some rare and unusual palms in the collection the chelyocarpus is yet to survive a winter with protection but the dypsis and geonoma have survived two winters and are looking stronger each season time will tell if the chelyocarpus lives but I certainly will be placing it in the hothouse that’s for sure the geonoma has an incredible new leaf colour and from memory I think the minuta was at least ten years of age what I should have been doing is every pal: that come into my collection I should have created a file it would be a lot easier that way

how long does it take until a palm nursery is profitable? is it a good businness in Australia?

Hey, I'm just wondering if a palm and other plants nursery would be a good business. Because I would like to study horticulture and maybe have a nursery near Brisbane and Sunshine coast, but I don't know, Anyone knows how's the demand on exotic palms and plants on that area of Australia? How long would it take until you start making money? Would you need a lot of money when you start off? How do you even open up a nursery? If anyone has any kind of information about this matter, it would help me a lot. Thanks

Not really my choice of palms as a collector but the biggest question I get asked is do you have any golden cane palms for sale unfortunately you got to grow them for the market I usually steer them towards a dypsis baronii or dypsis black stem petiole but they insist on golden cane palms not a problem but in a few years it’s leaf city on a Sunday gardening job

This might be hard. I was wondering if this is filifera or hybrid. This trunk is thick, 20 inch diameter, others are a lot more broader looking. There is definitely robusta (Not pictured) on the other side of the shopping center.

I was wondering if it would be nice to have an Arizona thread where the few of us Arizona people can directly discuss with each other growing (or trying to grow) palms. I feel that while the input from others in CA and beyond is very helpful it does not always apply to us in AZ. I see people say that this or that palm wants full sun, and while that is the case for CA or elsewhere not too many palms can take full AZ sun. Hoping a few other Arizona people will chime in on this thread and maybe use it for posting AZ specific questions. I will throw out the first questions. I see Mule palms and Parajueba palms recommended for full sun. How many hours are we talking f…

Long story short: I got scammed by an Indonesian seller who was supposed to be sending me some Pinanga seeds. When the seeds arrived, it was obvious that they were something very different than what I had ordered, but I don't know what species it is. It looks like some sort of Areca species (Paul Craft thinks so), so if someone has an idea of what it is, I appreciate any and all help! The location where the palms are was given to me as "Location of Nanga Mahap sub-district, Sekadau district Indonesia's West Kalimantan province". It looks like there are about 17 Areca species on the island of Borneo, and some can easily be ruled out. Of course, it might not be Areca …

Dypsis baronii “black petiole”
by Billy- 1 reply

So I got this palm from Joe Palma labeled as baronii “black petiole”. I’ve posted about this palm before but no one seems to know if “black petiole” is a species of it’s own or if it’s just a colorful baronii. Who knows. Doesn’t help that I can’t find any info on it. Super pretty palm whatever it is.

Beccariophoenix Alfredii Grove 1 2

After doing some yard week this weekend, I had to stop and really admire our little Beccariophoenix alfredii grove and thought I would share. I took a chance and planted these palms (22’ spacing) back in early December. They really needed some help in the iron department, which isn’t uncommon for this species, but the cool weather wouldn’t allow for any uptake...but all that changed a couple weeks ago. After I get around to taking down a Black Cherry or two, more alfredii will be added for sure Big shout out to @Mike Evans for not only the palms, but also for having the patience to answer what I feel like are never ending questions....thank you sir!!!

just outside my friend's community in sylmar (san fernando valley) is an overgrown "oasis" that i recently started adding fruiting plants to along with some support species (ie nitrogen fixers). throughout the year there's a trickle of irrigation runoff that provides enough water for a dozen full grown willow trees, several large fan palms, an elm tree and other weedy species. in the past couple months i've planted more than a dozen fruiting size trees as well as numerous seedlings. so far the only palm i've planted is a small green butia odorata... in the same hole i also put a couple small seedlings... jackfruit and surinam cherry...…

Potting up some Johannesteijsmannia magnifica sprouts
by happypalms- 2 replies
A easy palm to germinate the magnifica taking around 3 months bottom heating 30 degrees Celsius coco coir perlite mix and growing them is just the same as any other water loving palm once a few leaves have been grown you can pretty well much water them daily in summer about the thing you have to worry about is breaking the roots when planting or repotting so my advice is grow them on benches so the roots don’t grow into the ground in containers or even better sit them in a tray of water these seeds where purchased from RPS so far its looking like a 75% strike rate not to bad considering there journey around the globe to get to Australia and a delay in customs Australia

Hey everyone! I live in Queen Creek Arizona and currently have mule palms and pigamy date palms in my yard. I just spent a week in Hawaii and fell in love with the tropical palms and plants here. I have a big area on the east side of my house that is currently empty and gets afternoon shade. I would like to plant a Royal Palm as well as a papaya tree, banana tree and birds of paradise. Am I crazy or is it doable? Any advice on how these plants do in the Arizona desert or how to take care of these plants to make sure they survive? Or any ideas where I can purchase these plants in the valley? thanks in advance!

Pindo (Jelly) Palm

We had this small Pindo palm planted by a local nursery in the summer of 2022. In September of that year we had hurricane Ian come through and we had flooding in our yard. Then we had some bitter cold that December (17 degrees for 4 nights in a row). It actually looked fine last year with new fronds but it doesn't seem to be growing much. This past winter we had several very cold nights (low 20s) and now it's springtime and it's looking a little rough. The new fronds coming in have black on them and the older ones have brown on them but I don't think they're the ones that should be ready to cut off yet. What should we be doing?
