Florida Lethal Bronzing Status in 2022.
by BlueMarlin226- 1 follower

Anyone with knowledge about the subject able to provide a current status update and outlook for this terrible disease? Most of the articles I find are from 2019/2020, and don’t provide much useful info. I used to live in Lakeland and didn’t notice it until 2020, and in the past two years it seems to have gotten so much worse in the I-4 corridor. Apparently it’s been in the state since 2006, so why has it seemingly spread so much in the past few years? Is it likely to get much worse, or is there any reason to be optimistic? Thankfully it doesn’t seem to be too bad on the East Coast at this time, having lived in and near Jacksonville for the past year and traveling around a…

Help with Sylvester
by Flnewbie- 1 follower

I live in central Florida and had 4 Sylvester palms planted about 18 months ago. This palm started turning brown and the fronds don’t seem to be opening fully. Fertilizing with lesco and applying black cow. Watering with a bubbler 3 x a week. I’m having trouble finding an arborist to come out and help. Does anyone have any suggestions? I’ll be sending a sample to USF to rule out lethal bronzing.

Opinions on Butia
by Gville Palms- 12 replies
First of all, I know there have been many different threads on identifying Butia varieties and I have gone through many of them (all that I can find) but they have not really brought me any closer to an answer regarding a question I have about a Butia that I own. I bought this three years ago as a three gallon from either a Home Depot or a Lowe’s as just a cheapo plant for my side yard - it was maybe 25 bucks but looked nice. It was of course labeled as a pindo palm (Butia Capitata). Anyways, it grows and looks nothing like the other butias that I have. Within a matter of a couple years it has easily tripled in size, the trunk seems to be much more narrow than m…

Dealing with Ganoderma

Most places agree there is no treatment for Ganoderma. However, can the soil be treated once the blighted tree is removed? I wish to plant a plan in the same location, but don't want the same disease to reappear.

Pictured is Ravenea rivuralis. How do we know that the seeds that are emerging have been pollinated?
by Alexberm- 1 follower

I'm not sure what Ravenea Rivularis seeds are producing right now. It is a seed that has been produced by breeding. Because the male and female plants are not on the same plant. Could it be that the seeds seen in the picture have not been fertilized yet? The seed size is now only 1 millimeter. Normally the seed size used should be about 7-8 millimeters. Please help educate me on this matter. Thank you.

Partial spear pull?

Hey y’all it would seem as though one of my super mule palms has partial spear pull and I’m seeking advice. Any one ever encounter something like this before? I’m thinking that when we got really cold the outermost sections of the spear got killed but protected the inside fronds. whats funny is I have another super mule planted about 12 feet away and there doesn’t seem to be any damage there.

first big palm order and it's progress 1 2

My Floribunda order is on the way! Three boxes😳, coming tomorrow night. They will get a couple weeks worth of summer heat before it starts to cool to more typical temps they knew before. I have read plants remember heat stress for the future when it occurs again, so I'm hoping they get a taste and are ready in spring. I will be documenting their arrival and performance over time here while I prepare them for planting. Most are in pots already, but a few will be potted into a basic cactus and citrus mix while they adjust and I learn their quirks. I will show the successes and failures as well as what I think happened. Chime in if you have thoughts or questions and all …

With temperatures approaching 30c, combined with the postal service from hell, I was afraid to open my box of young palms that had been floating around in the nether regions of the state for 4 days instead of the express delivery they were meant to do. Fearfully I cut away 200 metres of tape, lifted the lid and expected to see little dehydrated crispy things but thanks to very careful packing, they were fine just wanted a little drink, as did I after the experience. So here are my pretty babies, Satakentia, Lanonia dasyanthus, Licuala kunsterii, Chamaedorea adscendens and Calyptrocalyx yummytummy or some name like that. I bought these little beauties from Australia'…

These are one of my favorites. They grow well for me with plenty of water and fertilizer. This was originally planted in probably 2015 or 2016 and was in a 2 gallon pot with 3 others. I let them all grow in the ground for a year or two but then decided to edit out 3 of the 4 so that I could get a big, fat trunk going. Show off your Majesty Palms!

Lipstick Palms 1 2

I just purchased 28 7 gallon Lipstick Palms. They are all in pretty good to very good health, many pushing 4' and ready to be potted up to 15 gallon. I am planning on putting them in an area where they have overhead protection over the winter. They will remain potted, receive water 6 times a day for one or two minutes. I will try placing a couple humidifiers that I have on hand in the middle of the clump, tiki torches outside the clump of plants and a lamp hanging above the plants emitting heat. They will be protected from north / northwestern winds. Does this sound like a good plan? Is fungicide absolutely required? If so, what type / where should I buy it? Am I cr…

Just a couple of garden shots the palms up the back of my garden are in a very dry spot at certain times of the season hence the varieties planted up the back garden are some common die hard varieties except the chambeyronia it’s planted in a very wet area along with the kentia dypsis saintelucei archontophoenix they may be common but definitely adding to the tropical look

I finally made it down the hill to do some work!
by Harry’s Palms- 15 replies

Fellow palm folks, about 7-8 months ago I broke my hip and had to have it repaired. Anyone who has been through this knows it is life changing. I will be 70 this year but I’m in very good shape and the doc says my bones are “super strong” for my age. I have been back on my bikes for a few months (avid cyclist) but haven’t ventured down the hill to visit my palms that are down there. I was afraid of losing balance and falling , it is steep. We have had above average rainfall so the weeds have really gotten bad. My wife and I have taken advantage of a cloudy day to clear out around our palms. My , how they have grown! I thought I would share some pictures of them. Harry

A question for the Brisbanians

Greetings to Brisbanians, especially those who don't live in the bayside suburbs. This will be the first winter for my Pelagodoxa henryana and I am uncertain of it's cold tolerance. I have seen photos of them growing outdoors in Orlando Florida which gets a lot colder than here but the specimen in the Mt Coot-tha gardens in in the conservatory. Now I am certain there are people out there who are much smarter than me who know the answer to this predicament, so here is your chance to gloat, skite and boast if you have grown one in the garden successfully and maybe share your secret. Please speak up too if you have proudly planted one only to have it croak at the first h…

I've been meaning to start this thread for awhile now, but have been too busy with the work that this new property has needed to have much free time to post about it. We are rained in here on the Big Island for a few days, so the time has come to finally document this project and what will soon be our new home here on the Big Island of Hawaii. Quick recap, our family moved from Fallbrook, CA to Hilo, Hawaii in 2017. We have a great home in town on 1/2 acre of land. You can read all about the creation of that garden here. It's amazing how quickly you can fill up 1/2 acre here, especially when there was already some existing fruit trees and landscaping that we ha…

Inspired by @palmsOrl's thread for Orlando, I'm starting this thread so we can share remarkable palms in the greater Tampa Bay area. What I mean by "remarkable" is a palm that's unusual for the area it is planted. A 10' coconut in Wesley Chapel would be remarkable whereas the same palm in St. Pete Beach would not be. Just use own judgement and err on overposting. The "greater Tampa Bay area" is somewhat ambiguous. For the purposes of this thread, let's go with a very broad definition and include all these areas: Hernando Pasco Hillsborough Pinellas Polk Manatee Sarasota

I would like this to be a thread where Palmtalkers post cold sensitive zone 10 palms you come across in the Orlando area. The ever-increasing effects of the urban heat island are more evident each year. The first is an updated photo of the Cocos nucifera growing at Smashburger near downtown.

Costapalmate Fronds 1 2 3

There have been a couple of questions in a couple of threads lately asking "What is Costapalmate?" I think I understand this term (maybe someone can post the definition again), but when I was first learning it was a difficult thing to picture in my head from just word descriptions. I had to really seek out palms to try to understand. I thought it would be educational for many here, lurkers and maybe some members and myself, to show photos of the costapalmate fronds, especially the UNDERSIDE, of many palms. It would also be educational for me to have a list all in one place of many costapalmate palm genus & species. It would also help sharpen ID skills for many…
