Solitary Lutescens-type seedling question
by Hilo Jason- 2 replies
I’ve posted this palm several times here on PalmTalk. Collected as seed by a friend in Madagascar. He referred to it as Dypsis “column” due to its size. It’s a stocky solitary Lutescens-type palm. It recently started seeding for me and I’m getting about 100% germination on the seeds. But what’s interesting is that some of the sprouts are green and some are golden. Does this also happen with the regular common Lutescens? I’ve never sprouted Lutescens so I don’t know. Would love any input. Parent plant: and here are a couple of the community pots of seedlings showing the golden and green coloring: Also interesting to note is …

Help ID This Coconut Pest
by agroventuresperu- 3 replies

Some sort of scale? They are on the undersides of the leaves, and looks like they excrete a black substance that ends up on top of the leaves. Lots of ants, so it appears there's some sort of mutually-beneficial relationship going on. Any organic solutions? It's the only coconut on the whole property I've ever seen with this problem. The coconut is probably the fastest-growing specimen we've ever had. It's in a spot that has access to more fertility. Lots of compost and sawdust has been placed around it during the past couple years. It's also received the same additional inputs as all the other coconuts this past year: ulexite, dolomite, gypsum, and potassi…

Bismarckia nobilis from seed - progress 1 2

I struggled a bit to get my first Bizzy to sprout and only 1 did from this batch which I think was my second or third try. The first pic was taken April 3rd and the second was taken today October 3rd 2021. 6 months of growth from when the first leaf broke the surface give or take a day or two. Maybe a minor achievement to many but I’m kind of proud of this little palm lol. After maybe 3 months of trying it finally worked, Next milestone will be a palmate frond hopefully soon!

C. onilahensis--keep or remove offset?
by Foggy Paul- 1 follower

Hi all. Our C. onilahensis has been in the ground about three years now. It was very slow but is starting to pick up, probably helped by the past two good rain winters. We planted out two, a five and a one gallon if I recall correctly. The five gallon has always been bigger of course, but the one gallon is catching up. My question is about the five gallon. It has four offsets, the smallest of which doesn't seem to be oriented very well in relation to the other three. Would you let it develop or remove it? The one gallon plant has three very solid looking offsets. TIA for all suggestions. The plant overall: The offset in question: Another view: …

Medemia seed germinated like little rockets, all together. Ive taken a shot and put them straight in the ground in deep sand just over 2months ago and we are coming into the begining of autumn in south west WA. They've def got a good hold in the ground, been a warm dry summer by our standards giving roughly weekly deep watering. im hoping to see some leaves soon. Wondering if any of you palmos can share experience with direct sowing medemia, cheers

Hello! I’m located in Mexico City, which has a mild weather with ultra rainy summers, definitely NOT a cocos nucifera territory. But turns out I was just driving by and ran into the weirdest palm, it looked big, thriving and certainly similar to a COCOS NUCIFERA and i just couldn’t believe my eyes because it was big. I made a small investigation and turns out that palm tree has been there for a long time, since 2016! It was a small baby and it’s been growing ever since, now in 2020 it really got bigger but there’s no street view imagery, i promise I’ll bring current pictures, but here’s some detailed views of the palm tree and how it’s evolved throughout the years, is …

ovobontsira
by mike in kurtistown- 2 replies

This post is a response to a question I received on Facebook, and I am responding in PalmTalk because of the facilities for a more lengthy response. It involves growing a species of Dypsis (now Chrysalidocarpus) identified as ovobontsira in offerings from RPS that I sowed in June 2009 and in September 2013. The only seedling survivor of the 09 seed batch was planted on March 2019 and has grown well. This is what it looks like today (lawn chair for scale): I found another seedling in a seedpot that contained very different palms, obviously misplaced. Looking at my records, I saw that I was raising "orange crush" (now Chrysiladocarpus paucifolius) which the…

Bismarckia nobilis (Post Yours) 1 2 3
by SoulofthePlace- 8 followers

It's about 6 years old, growing slower in the Azores, and is wobbling. Probably because the planter has a tall rock bottom inside on one side occupying more than half of it and then it slides down to a deeper ground which has got no bottom and it was planted a bit on the high side, exposing the roots for 1/2 inch or so, so perhaps the palm pushed itself up a bit and never released its full potential roots into the soil. I added sand under it and I hope the roots will be released or I may have to stake it. Would staking it potentially damage the sensitive roots?

How do you find out the fungus that killed your palm, so you know what to use to treat the others with? Just lost a Mule this week; having it removed - stump and root ball and all. But I want to treat 5 other Mules in the area, and 2 Queens. Read a previous thread about a Sylvester Palm Fungus (and some additional remarks over 2 years) - suggesting many things for the person who posted and what fungicides they already had on hand. I'm looking for a heart / crown treatment and a soil drench. Are there fungicides that do both? Looking to buy something asap and get my remaining palms treated. Any suggestions to help me treat my other palms would be great, thanks!
