6 seedlings to identify
by fiji jim- 33 replies
- 1.4k views
Hi all, In the last few days I have been starting some stock-take and decided it was time to attempt to identify some unknowns as they are now old enough to show some distinctive characteristics. They are all between 10 to 20 inches tall (25 to 50 cm) and more than 2 years old. Any help would be appreciated. #1 entire view

Pot Planting
by Shon- 16 replies

Seeing what Colin did in the Basselinia thread got me thinking. What are the advantages and disadvantages of planting a palm in it's pot? I'm in the opinion that it might be a good idea for marginal palms.

People afraid of tall palms
by osideterry- 25 replies
- 1.9k views
The neighbor thread has me thinking of another weird bias I've noticed. I work 1-2 times a month with a local palm nursery (hey Johnny, how's it goin') and I've noticed a lot of folks just don't care for palms that get more than 15 ft tall. You'll be showing them palms, and they ask how tall it gets, and when you say 25-30ft, they make a face like someone nearby has flatulence. It doesn't seem to be related to powerlines or overhead obstacles. Often, these same people's biggest complaint is that they can't grow a lot of tropical plants because they don't have any shade in their yards. Anyone else notice this bias?

The Floridians won't be impressed, but I've never seen an Adonidia at a big-box store before. For this size, and only $20.95, I figured it could live inside from November to March. It will never go in the ground. Size 11 Court Classic for scale.

Thrinax radiata
by Patrick- 3 replies
Hey all. I've got some Thrinax radiata growing at the house here and so far they've seen a few nights of 29 degrees and one night at 27. They seem allright at the moment. I've given them minimal protection as they are somewhat experimental. I think I've put them under a small queen palm on cold nights. Is anyone else growing these around where it gets colder, or does anyone else have anything that has suprised them as to the hardiness of the plant? On thing that's suprised me is my Chamaedorea plumosa. They're supposed to take only 28, but mine took 23 with protection. The spear pulled and I counted it as dead, but it came back! It was the same story for a neighbor…

Cold Tolerance "Attalea cohune"
by buffy- 3 replies
- 1.8k views
I've hunted on the web for awhile. The most confident sounding information is posted on Floridata. I'm in Zone 8a/8b and am trying to figure out how cold kills this palm. What is the limiting factor of the biology? Also, who has any old mature specimens? Obviously this plant is pretty well protected until it finally starts growing upward.

Coccothrinax mystery
by Al in Kona- 17 replies
- 2.1k views
Below are 4- photos I just took of a Coccothrinax sp. growing in the garden that I really find attractive but don't know what it is. When it was a bit smaller I had asked what some of you thought it might be and a few suggested perhaps it was in the C. barbadensis complex despite the fact that I purchased it as a tiny seedling with the tag of Coccothrinax scoparia, which apparently was wrong. There's always a chance it could be a hybrid also. Please look it over and give me your input on what you think, especially those of you who have experienced seeing or been around a lot of the Coccothrinax. This palm stands at about 2m (6.5 ft.)

Trachycarpus latisectus

On a recent palm buying trip, I spotted this stunning "tropical looking" palm among the pots of cold hardy plants. Having seen this size plant, I have decided to leave my existing slow growing T. l's in the ground. I was very tempted to remove them awhile back! If this palm is as cold hardy as it has been claimed, it has tremendous potential here and in other parts of USDA 9. Any other pictures of this palm? Post them please!

Transplantation Question
by JimR- 4 replies
I am getting ready to do a significant remodel/addition to my house in San Antonio. Unfortunately, the addition will require moving 2 T. fortunei with 3-4 ft. of trunk. Construction will probably last 6 months+. I am considering trying to transplant the palms into large pots until the construction is done and then re-planting them in the ground. Is this reasonable? What should I worry about in carrying this out?

Large ohi'a tree vs. palms
by bgl- 37 replies
- 1.4k views
Typically, the tradewinds here (95% of the time) are very pleasant and gentle, and windy conditions are extremely unusual. About once a year we have very strong gusty winds for several days. Last time was in late January 2007, and two large Ohi'a (Metrosideros polymorpha) trees fell down. One of them landed right smack on top of a Dypsis sp. bejofa and I posted photos at that time of the damage. To my surprise, the Dypsis survived and is doing just fine now. For the last several days, the entire state of Hawaii has experienced strong gusty winds with plenty of rain, more so in certain areas. When I walked around our garden this morning I couldn't believe my eyes: a very …

Weights of various palms?
by Bob Johnson- 13 replies
- 19.9k views
Our society recently recieved this question from a local landscape architecht: "I am currently conducting research on a rooftop garden and would appreciate any help you can offer. We are in the process of designing our planting materials and are looking for weights of different palm trees in various sizes. Do you know of any calculations or tables that would be useful to us for calculating weights?" Does anyone know of a source of such info? I would like to be able to give him some data or at least point him in the right direction.

New Dypsis
by ellidro- 19 replies

I bought some seedlings from a reputible dealer in southern california. He said the seeds were bought as dypsis albofarinosa from gunther in Madagascar about a year ago. These seedling look nothing like the albofarinosa that Jungle Music or Floribunda are selling. Apparently these seedlings are only a little over a year old and have grown way faster than any other dypis he has grown including onilahensis and baronii. Let me know what you guys think, its stumped a few pretty knowledgeable socal growers.

Palm That Can Handle Cold to 20-25 Range
by _Keith- 9 replies

First., this list is getting big, which is cool. It is a not a "safe" list. This is a list for folks who get cold fronts in the mid to low 20s that are looking for a single comprehensive list of plams to try. Some may go fast, some may last a few years, some may last longer than you. Where did the list come from? They were either listed on Palmtalk as someone growing them in a climate similar to above or found on some website's cold hardy palm list. I will keep adding and updating the list, but to be one it, the palm should be planted in the ground favorable microclimates OK, and not given undue protection except maybe when young. And of course, no potted palms. …
