Some Easter plantings @
by MattyB- 14 replies

Well, I stayed home this Easter weekend and got some work done around the house. My neighbor, Bob, almost got his truck stuck down my hill trying to dump a load of compost. We eventually got it back up once we lightened to load and the 4 wheel drive kicked in. Had time to plant a few things too. Here's some pics. First off is Euterpe precatoria! I was lucky enough to acquire one of these last year as a liner. It was completely rooted out in a tall 3 gallon pot so it was time to get it into the ground under the Jacaranda tree. Everything needs to be staked at my place due to the strong winds that come up the hill during storms. Just for the record this are…

I had to get up on the second story roof top to take a look at a cable and decided to carry the digital camera along. As often as we look at our own palm gardens, this view is even amazing to me. Front yard Carpoxylon front and center.... Satakenia reaching up for more sun on the right side. Chamberyonia macrocarpa at the front door

Judging by the inflorescence I found hanging down this morning, it looks like my Queen out front is now no longer a baby. BOOO HOO! This palm has grown up fast as its 3.5 years from a large 3 gallon/small 7 gallon.

Drymophloeus litigiosus

Anyone have any experience with this palm? I bagged some seeds on the 20th (that's 9 days ago) and I just checked them. Most have already germinated, and some have roots a few inches long already. These have to be the quickest seeds I've ever germinated - faster even than Washingtonias. How about pot culture requirements on these? Anyone growing them? Thanks.

I planted this palm in the ground last march 2007. this shows 1 years worth of growth. It will hopefully start speeding up now thats its getting established. notice how it was more green when it was planted and how it silvered up over time. also note I have not trimmed ANY fronds on this palm in this 1 years time. all stay healthy and green. note the lowest smallest front on the bottom left in the 1st photo. it is still there in the second photo healthy as can be be curving into the ground. before after

What I did on Easter (after church) and

Hello All, It rained here all day Saturday (a good thing; we have a serious drought) and I figured I'd get nothing done this weekend. But on Easter Sunday, rain stopped & sun broke through now & then, so we got to work in back yard. We starting a shade palm Eden beneath our spreading queen palms (so, yes, they are good for something). Just beyond the 9' Areca concinna we planted last week, we dug up a plot and planted a Dypsis albafarinosa and two Dypsis pusillas.

Are these regular queens?
by joe_OC- 7 replies

I had a friend over who is also into palms. He looked at my queen palms and noted that he did not think they were regular queen palms because of the shape of the trunk. i never thought about it until he mentioned it. I just took these pictures and was hoping that someone can confirm what type of queens I have. Note the slender trunk for the height of palm Group Shot Thanks in advance. Joe

Too much rain

Here in the panhandle we have had more rain this spring than in past years that I can remember and its starting to take its toll on some of my plants.. My pygmy's took a beating this winter all except the ones under a large oak tree had their spears pull so the rain really isnt helping them but I just noticed today that 2 of my p. reclinata's have spears which are brown at the growing point and broke when I pulled on them, the spears are still bright green.. Two w. robustas did the same and also my brahea edulis which came back to life after the spear pulled late last spring.. its really aggrivating but I dont know what to do.. I cleared all the debris from the centers su…

Clinostigma Samoense and Ponapense
by Palm Guy- 13 replies
- 1.4k views
Hi all, I'm considering purchasing some of the Clinostigma ponapense seeds offered on Ortanique's website but I've noticed they have been available for quite some time now. Does anyone know how long these seeds are good for? I might just try my luck and hopefully I get a few to pop. Also, does anyone know if Samoense or Ponapense will be able to handle salty, windy conditions? Thanks, Mike F

Is this a pure Livistona decora?
by Alberto- 6 replies
- 1.1k views
I have eight Livistona decora (formerly L.decipiens), bought as seeds from RPS and they are five year old now. One year ago I bought a little L.decora at a nursery in São Paulo. The palms I have grown from seeds have stiffer leaflets and they don´t show any weeping to it until now. The fans also are a little, how I can say it, plumose,...the fans aren´t flat!

Satakentia
by soro- 12 replies

Hi guys, has anyone had any luck with the latest batch of Satakentia seeds from RPS? I got 200 but haven't found a single viable seed (sliced about 50 already). They look healthy all around except the embryos which are soft, mushy, porridge like and smell fermented. Am I the only one? Does anyone have any idea where Toby's seeds come from (it is not Japan) and how old they are? If it is Hawaii then someone on this forum must know about it a bit more... Cheers, Marian(o)

Is anyone growing Hyophorbe verschaffeltii x lagenicaulis in SoCal or places in FL that might see 30 degrees or so sometimes? I am wondering if this has the 'hybrid vigor' or if it is wimpy like Hyophorbe lagenicaulis to the occasional cold snap. Does anyone have these for sale in 15 gallon or so size?

Maypan Question
by rozpalm- 14 replies
- 1.9k views
First off if this has already been discussed before, I apologize and if you could point me to the thread that would be cool. I have several Maypans growing in my yard. They seed regularly and for some time I have been planting the seeds and letting them grow. About a year ago I was told by a former nurseryman that I should not plant the Maypan seeds since they will grow tree that is genetically defective. When I asked him why he really couldn't give me a good answer, so I am guessing its something he was told. I researched the Maypan and read that it was an F1 hybrid. When I read about what that meant, I did read that the offspring are regarded as F2, and it is not…

OK, Time for the Weekend Reports 3/16/08 1 2
by _Keith- 49 replies

On Saturday Cel and I went out to the Louisiana Plant Festival at Forest Hill, La. This little town has a population of 500 or so folks and over 100 nurseries, many very large. Not much in the way of unique things there, but killer pricing. On the way home, we passed this little hole in the wall nursery. I wasn't even going to stop, but then Cel saw that the ower also sold jewelry, so that was that. I started walking about the 3 rows of plants and low and behold there was a phoenix palm that looks a bit different. I asked the attendant "what you got there?" to which he answered "that's one of them sylvester palms." Score. Phoenix sylvestris was on my wanted l…

How My Palms Fared this Winter
by osideterry- 17 replies

In December's worst freezes, I pulled my 25 potted palms into the garage. I decided to leave them outside from then on. My palms experienced below freezing at least 3 times, and saw a low of 29.7F. Anyway, here's the photos. First a Hyophorbe indica (green form) I picked up as a LINER at Jungle Music in November. Potted it up to 5 gallon. No damage at all.
