Here are a few selected palm photos taken by a friend and collector (from Uberlândia, Minas Gerais State) called Ricardo Péres, in Rio de Janeiro last year. He's sent me a CD sometime ago and I had told him I'd post these in Palmtalk. Thanks Ricardo for the eye candy: First a few from Jardim Botânico:

ID help with what was labeled B. edulis
by war_eagle- 10 replies
I picked up what was labeled as a Guadalupe Palm (B. edulis) over the winter in a 75% off sale. I can't find many closeups of young B. edulis', but the more I read about it the less I think this tree is actually B. edulis. I believe the fronds are much more deeply divided and more palmate, rather than costapalmate. My ID skills are extremely limited, but I'm thinking this may be a Livistona, maybe decora or australis. What do you guys think? Let me know if any more pictures would be helpful.

So it's raining ahem...(<---borrowing "ahem" from Dave) AGAIN...and I get a great idea...why not go outside and empty out the greenhouse so the plants get some REAL water for a change.. and that's exactly what i did: Greenhouse now empty (of everything that matters): Here is the mystery Dypsis base (anyone want to guess what the heck it is?): Here are the mystery Dypsis leaves:

Phoenix rupicola
by palmaddict- 16 replies

My Phoenix rupicola has flowered for the second year with more seed this year than last. This is my favorite Phoenix by far. The fruit is about ripe and I have no plans on harvesting it so if someone wants it please come and get it. I already have four rupicolas in my yard so no need for more. The rupicola has such great scale and is the softer look is fantastic. My largest is planted in a bed with barrel cactus perfect for San Diego.

Phoenix sylvestris thorns poisonous?
by phatmiata- 15 replies

So im wondering if i need to worry about the thorns of Phoenix sylvestris ??? I have been poked before, but just lightly. Well somehow i managed to poke the heck outta myself on Friday moving one that was in a bucket off my truck. This one left a really sweet bruise on my forearm and was sore for the rest of the day. ts no longer sore but i have a 2" bruise where the tree left its mark. Just wondering if any of the nursery guys on here know if i need to just chalk it up as a battle wound, or do i need worry about some infection, or poison it may carry, etc etc. I think i will run duct tape around the base (thorns) next time i move these, doh!!

Hello, I'll come in Miami for holidays. I wonder where are the best places to see palm trees in the parcs in Miami. I wonder to see the wild palm trees in the countryside (Sabal, Rapidophyllum...)too. I would like to visit some private gardens (tropical garden). I'm very interested to meet people who share my passion. Thank you CED.33

Growth Rings - made to measure 1 2
by Walter John- 58 replies
- 3.1k views
Using my measuring tape, I went around the place and measured the growth rings on various palm trunks. This may be a "so what" thread to some, but I think it's a worth while exercise, see how well things are growing, perhaps use this a guide. Another excuse to get up close and personal with the palms of my jungle, I don't think they mind a little trunk tickle every now and then. That's centimetres by the way, 2.5 cm = I inch. Gotta move on Archontophoenix cunninghamiana Carpentaria acuminata Dypsis leptocheilos Dictyosperma album

Death of a Foxtail
by _Keith- 25 replies

My Foxtail is officially dead. You said it wouldn't last in my climate. And you were right, but it was not last winter, or this winter that did it in. It did take a hit last winter, but was recovering nicely. I think it would have recovered fully and made it through this winter as well. It was the dual hurricanes that did it in, hitting while it was mid way in recovery, the windburned killed the still tender new fronds.

Digging up Chamaerops
by NorCalWill- 3 replies
I have 2 individually planted Chamaerops in my back yard that I have decided I want to dig up and get out so that the smaller one (in the back of the pic) can devolop into a nice multi-trunked tree without these other two in the way and looking separate. I planted these two trees 6 years ago from a job site I was working on. They are two separate single trunked trees. I believe they were trained to be single trunked. I dug a huge amount of root in this move, so much that I needed a crane to get them moved into my back yard. I don't have room for them anywhere else, and was thinking of finding a buyer ( good deal of course) and having them moved immediately to a …

I must have passed this palm 50 times in the past without noticing it here at the UCLA Botanic Garden. Last week I finally took a good look and it's a nice palm! Somewhat reminiscent of a C. crinita with the trunk. Is anyone growing this one? And another one: Closeup of trunk:

Bats in palms
by Mike Evans- 9 replies
I was walking through my nursery today & noticed something in the corner of my eye. At first, I thought of a wasp nest. But, a closer look amazed me. A small bat was hanging on a small petiole of a Chamaedorea elegans. Of all the large palmate leaf palms in the garden, that would provide him w/ excellent protection, he chose an open environment to hang out. I have seen bats under large fan leaves before. They seem to make good hang outs for them. I figure a lot of other people have seen bats in their palms, & would like to share their photos. Lets see them.

Caryota Before & After
by el-blanco- 5 replies

Here are a few shots of my C. Gigas/Obtusa (not sure which, just BIG!!). I think this was a small 15 gallon about 6 years ago. I water the fool out of this treeand dump good old manure on it every month. The before was obviously a summer shot. Everything was ripped out 4 months ago so I could repair some dry rot damage to the house. A patio goes in this summer. Dypsis Decipiens added for the heck of it. PG That is a Blue Bell Decipiens. Gracias, Jefe

Washingtonia x Pritchardia?
by Hollywood Palms- 10 replies
- 1.3k views
Hi, I was wondering if anyone was trying to cross Washingtonia x Pritchardia? It would be great to get a more cold-tolerant Pritchardia, with a shorter trunk and much less split fronds. Sort of a Pritchardia pacifica for us north of the tropics? Or, are the two not closely related enough for a cross? Thanks, David

Watering the indoor palms
by John Case- 14 replies
I have been watering my indoor palms with aquarium water weekly for the past 4 months (they will all go outside once the minimum temp is above 50F) and it looks like they seem to be very pleased. I would like to inquire if anyone knows of any potential problems this may present, as I am considering rerouting my backwash piping into the drip system for the outside palms (and other plants) as well. Thanks!

New Caledonia indifferance
by pogobob- 22 replies

I was wondering why it is so difficult to get palm enthusiasts in New Caledonia to exchange and relate to the rest of the palm people around the world. It can't be language barriers, politics, or religion. Why is there such a lack of palm community and spirit of palm interest, with the exception of one occasional fine fellow?

Thanks to a heater and some mellow winter weather, my greenhouse is out of control. Most of the big things you see will be planted out. So I will clean out a lot in spring. How do your greenhouses look right now? Here is a pic looking from the door. The plant in the front, left-center is a Euterpe espiritosantensis. I bought that from JDA and had if bungi-corded in my truck bed. Well, the cord broke and that thing hit top of crown first into the tailgate when I hit took off from a stoplight. Smashed it and actually bent the top to 90 degrees. Now look at it, it is growing back! Damn palms are tough. Stuff waiting to go into the ground this spring:

Trachycarpus nanus
by PalmGuyWC- 11 replies
- 2.3k views
I have a T. nanus that I've been growing for 3 or 4 years, and it's one of the slowest growing palms I've ever seen. It's in a 3 gal. container and only grows 2 or 3 fronds a growing season. It's big enough to be planted and I'm wondering do they like full sun or part shade? Last summer I had a heat wave with temps toping out at 113, and the tips of the fronds on the Trach were burned and it looked sad for awhile, but I imagine the roots got to hot in the container. It has since recovered and is growing again. Anyone have any cultural suggestions? I'd sure hate to lose it because its the only one I have. Dick
