Dear folks today i felt that the Canarian Isalnd Date Palm which is in a small terracota pots, needs to be changed to a bigger plastic barrel.before it is finally grounded in the most desirable place in our house garden. And pro's who are running nursuries, kindly bear with the crude method used by me.this is a simple method for all the new commers who have entered the arena, to learn how to transplant from one pot to a bigger pot ! Areca catechu/West Palm

This is an old, mature spesimen at Ann Norton Sculpture Gardens. To quote Riffle and Craft: "Year-round warmth is essential to this palm, limiting it's cultivationto Zone 11,but it sometimes can be found in the warmest parts of 10B." In habitat,it reaches 100 feet but in cultivation half. I would estimate this palm to be close to 50 feet with it's swings and crooks: I stumbled on this with my buddy Bill DeBoe during PRA

Chambeyronia Macrocarpa Group Planting
by joe_OC- 4 replies

I have a single Chambeyronia Macrocarpa (planted as a 15 gal a year ago) that I want to add a couple smaller sized ones next to it to form a group planting. Is this a bad idea? If not, how close can I plant them to the established palm?

Caryota zebrina impresses me
by junglegalfla- 6 replies

This palm may have more potential here in St. Pete than I realized. I bought it as an experiment as a little seedling. Last fall I set the pot on the side yard and forgot about it. We were in the low thirties quite a bit. This morning we dipped to 38. I just stumbled upon it and it looks like it hasn't missed much of a beat. I see the newest frond looks a little washed out but from what I read, the leaves show striping so it may be normal. All my potted palms get dynamite. Most of my seedlings look a bit weary but not this one!

Trachycarpus princeps seeds and seedlings
by garrytsen- 22 replies
- 6.6k views
2.5 months after we collected Trachycarpus princeps seeds , few of our Trachycarpus princeps seeds begin to germinate yesterday and we put them in the pot with peastmoss ,sand and clay. We have a warm winter here of about 10-20 C in average and so T.princeps may not need a cold treatment for germination as we previously thought. Our fully original seedlings which we took from the source still have 2 leaves after 1 year's growth. They are growing such slow. They seem to stand still for a whole year without growth.

Euterpe oleracea (Pará Dwarf) - "Super Berry"
by Mark_NoVA- 12 replies
- 3.6k views
The description from Rare Palm Seeds makes it sound like this could be nice in a container--fruits at 1m after 3 years, stays relatively short, large amount of good quality berries (which I imagine would be attractive). What has been your experience with these? Is anybody selling them?

Nostalgic Photos.

I was looking through my photobucket album and came across some old photos, and felt like posting a few interesting ones. The only palm I didn't plant personally in my yard back in March of 05. Anyone who has seen the yard can see how much this has changed. Palmfest 2005, how many Palmtalk members can you see? Chambeyronias in full sun at Montgomery: Hemithrinax ekmaniana, 2006. Collected originally by Carlo Morici I think.

Stumbled into this awesome Bismarkia nobilis at the local hardware store by accident last Saturday. I have never seen any in Tasmania before anyway i am going to plant it in my front yard ,with my well drained soil and all time low of 28 f it should be ok ( hopefully !!! )but slower growing in our cooler climate I hear that the roots are very touchy so i will be extra careful planting this one out .

Melbourne Heat/Drought Damage 2009 1 2 3 4
by Adam from Oz- 121 replies
- 7.8k views
Hi All, We are now into the 12th year of this drought and with water restriction - still. We had a heatwave lasting four days. The temperatures peaked at 45.1C (113.2F) with our first ever occurrence of three consecutive days over 43C (109.4F). This, combined with the fact that we are severely restricted in our ability to water, humidity down to 5% and there's been no rain in about a month has led to some damage and loss. I have lost about 10 palms completely with others showing browning off. I took some pics of palms around my neighbourhood. Here we go: Toasted Howea forsteriana:

Hello Palmtalk members, I was contacted by EPS member Mike Horwitz who lives in the UK. He will be visiting the Ft. Pierce area of Florida at Easter and would like to know where he can go to find cold-hardy palm seedlings. I know many members here live in or are familiar with central and north Florida. I suggested to Mike that he consider a long day trip up into north Florida to find palms if he knew exactly where to go. I am quoting his request to me that includes his e-mail. Please be helpful and contact him with suggestions and info about palm sources so his visit to FL is fruitful and memorable. Thanks to all. TO ALL FLORIDA PALMTALK MEMBERS: I was wonde…

pruning rattan palms
by kristof p- 3 replies

i've heard that rattans can be pruned to the hight you want them to be but i dont fully understand this. does this means that when you cut, for example, a stem that is 3m high in half that it wil resprout from the place were you have cutted it back. or do they mean that you can cut the main stems and keep the smaller ofshoots? i have a Plectocomia himalayana growing but when it wil reach the 5/6m mark i can not protect it anymore. it would be great if i could cut it back to lets say 2 a 3 meters high and that it wil grow again from there...

ID help with what was labeled B. edulis
by war_eagle- 10 replies
I picked up what was labeled as a Guadalupe Palm (B. edulis) over the winter in a 75% off sale. I can't find many closeups of young B. edulis', but the more I read about it the less I think this tree is actually B. edulis. I believe the fronds are much more deeply divided and more palmate, rather than costapalmate. My ID skills are extremely limited, but I'm thinking this may be a Livistona, maybe decora or australis. What do you guys think? Let me know if any more pictures would be helpful.
