Phoenix reclinata

I wanted to plant one of these at my In-laws house,(they have 5 acres, so no problem with room) I showed my wifes folks and the love it. So my next question would be, where can i get one at a decent size, maybe 15 or 25 gallon. And how many years in your experience will it take to get the same size as the one in the photo? I want them have it long enough to be able to enjoy it (they are in their early 60's), I want a huge one, but im quite sure i could not afford a full size palm like this one pictured? I looked in my "Betrock's" Landscape Palm book and it just states the growth rate is "Moderate." This photo was taken by me at the new Wiregrass Mall in Pasco.

Palm ID Please
by pg6922- 5 replies
The problem I have with identifying a palm is not knowing what they look like at a less than mature age. So, I would guess this palm some form of pseudophoenix but I cant find any photos that look like these. They have a really pronounced heel. I know its probably pretty easy, but not having a trunk is throwing me. Thanks, Patrick

What's going on ?
by Miccles- 28 replies

Hi all, My healthy P.Cocoides has been growing care-free in a pot for several years. This afternoon I noticed something a little unusual about it and had a closer look. This is a solitary species, so what's going on here ??? As mentioned above, the palm is otherwise healthy, with a new spear just about ready to emerge. Is this due to injury, stress... other ?? Can this "just happen" ? Any pointers would be most welcome !! Regards Michael. Photo of palm:

Blue Jubaea's
by kristof p- 23 replies

while those blue Jubaea's are available to most of us (the seeds) there is not much information on these Jubaea's. are they just as cold hardy as the 'normal' ones, where do they come from, etc... after a search on the net i did find pictures of Jubaea's of differant wild populations and one of those wild populations shows those blue Jubaea's. could this be the place they are coming from? if so they come from one of the most northerly populations....and maybe just a little bit les cold hardy? look at the pictures of the population of Pedegua, those look very blue... the article is in spanish so i have mostly no idea what they are talking about. How often do Palms Set seed
by Zayin- 1 reply
Trying to figure out how often certain palms set seed. I know that the local Trachycarpus Fortunei and Wagnerianus seed around Dec-Jan and then again in mid-late summer. Do all palms seed around this time? I know that this might sound like a wierd question, but Im thinking of planning a trip to Cuba and may want to collect a seed or two... from the local Copernicia population.. anyone know? anyone? I had to extend a trip in NZ to collect seed from the most silver Butia Yatay I had ever seen, as they wouldn't be ready for two weeks. ( still waiting for them to germinate) I don't think that I could ever get away with doing this ever again...

Need a Rhapis ID
by JD in the OC- 5 replies
This is a Rhapis I bought recently. Its leaves are lanceolate and very stiff. It is not Rhapis KOBAN because I already have that. This one takes full sun at a young age, has a thick trunk with robust petioles, and is a very profuse clumper. Any ideas? I have been calling it "Rhapis lanceolata"

Dypsis "fine leaf"
by PalmatierMeg- 27 replies
- 2.5k views
Last fall I bought a Dypsis "fine leaf" at the D'Asign Source sale and kept it potted thru winter. We will be doing a planting binge this weekend. I haven't been able to pin down specific info about this palm, such as How tall does it get? Is it understory, emergent or in-between? Does it require rich soil with lots of compost? Will it take sun or require deep shade? I appreciate any input. I want to give this palm the happiest home I can. Thanks to all

Germinating Seed
by carolinapalms- 12 replies
I am trying to learn how to germinate seeds. I have been successful with Sabal Palmetto. However some other seeds seem to have fungus growing on the exposed surface. I have sprayed these seeds with fungicide. Was this the correct thing to do? In the future should I put some fungicide powder on seed? If so, what product (Name Brand would be helpful) should I use. I am using the baggy method. Thanks, Tim

It ain't all pretty
by _Keith- 10 replies

It is spring here. I just hauled in my 5th yard of mulch. By my best efforts I have 12 yards to go, hauled in one pickup truck load at a time. Not to mention the fertilizer, glad that winter is over, and now waiting for rain for I know soon to come is the spring drought before the summer rains begin. And the Roundup and the weed eating. Compost in the beds I envision starting this year. I am working my butt off to insure that the (palm) growing season goes well. I could go on and on about my efforts this spring to insure a good summer. Tell me about yours.

Hello palm lovers, When I went to Jeff's spring sale this year, I carried my camera and took photos of the fabulous palms that landscaped his nursery. I will post these with little comment. Some of them I recognized, others I wasn't so sure. But centerpiece for me was the enormouse Raphia (take note, Kris, the trunk is massive).

Seedling smells of mildew
by freddyuk- 5 replies
I have several year old seedlings in various stages of growth. Some have stalled in growth after the first two leaves emerged at the end of last summer. The seed pods are still firm so i assume have nutrients left in them but no sign of any new growth. One seedling definitely smelt mildewy so i decided to repot in fresh medium and in the process check for damage to the root and find out what was going on. I was amazed to see a huge root system with white roots showing so i assume they are viable? I had to find a bigger pot as the roots were so large. Is this normal and should i have left it as it did smell rotten but obviously was not dead. Was there a better alternati…

Dypsis boiviniana
by PalmatierMeg- 2 replies
At the Searle sale last Saturday I found this little Dypsis boiviniana. It is a tiny thing and I cannot find much info about it. I assume it is an understory palm, that it requires shade, rich soil, lots of warmth and moisture. Correct me if I am wrong. But can it take SW FL alkaline sandy soil (even with amendments)? I know many Dypsis can't. How tall will it get? If necessary, I keep this little guy potted. All opinions considered. Thanks.

Had to dig up my Bismarkia - Bad 1 2
by _Keith- 44 replies
- 5.6k views
I have some tree work being done tomorrow, aka removed. Tree person advised that I dig up the bizzie as he could not guarantee it not taking a falling branch. It has been in 1 year and was maybe a 30 gallon. So, I dug it up. Horrible time of year to do so. Would it be better to leave it in a pot till late spring and plant then, or just do the transplant and pray? Whether in the pot or in the ground, it will be in the same microclimate.

Linospadix monostachys and me
by PalmatierMeg- 8 replies
- 1.4k views
Hello to all, So I went to the Searle spring sale on March 7 and spent some of my kids' inheritance. And I will surely annoy many people during the coming days with photos and questions about some of my acquisitions. During my 4 hours at the sale I must have trolled the shade house at least 20 times. And midway along the main isle early on I saw a lone Linospadix monostachya (walking stick palm), which, according to FTG needs warmth (which I can provide in SW FL most of the year), shade and acidic soil and is probably a poor choice for south FL. Every time I walked the aisle, this little palm called to me, "Take me home." And I would say, "If I do I will probably…
