Hi Fans, After a very strong dry season first rain fell yesterday since the month of Mai. I had a lot of work to keep my palms alive. Dry season also reagarding my internet connection. But now I am back and already asking for your help: I bought this a few months ago from a dealer in Kinshasa in very miserable condition. Now she is going well. As the stem seems to form a triangle I thought ìt maybe a Neodypsis decaryi? But as I never have seen one before I am not sure whether I am right or wrong? Best regards Mpiodi

Volunteer Seedlings
by Kathryn- 4 replies

I have some volunteer seedlings in my yard, but I don't know where they came from. There are about 20 spread throughout the yard. The only palm in my yard (or anywhere near it) producing viable seed is Phoenix roebelenii and these aren't roebelenii seedlings. These are rather stiff with a little bit of a blueish tint. I guess I must have left some seeds out and the squirrels planted them for me. My first guess would be Sabal minor, but I'll have to wait a few years to know for sure.

Questions about germinating Dypsis and Syagrus

I was able to get some free D. baronii seeds from Gonzer (thanks!) yesterday, and they are soaking in the greenhouse. I also picked up a few seeds from the nicest queen palm in my neighborhood. It was planted the same time mine was and is easily twice as tall now. I'm thinking future canopy in the corners of my backyard. Here's a photo of the baronii mama, since we all like pictures.

Yesterday was very exciting, as I finally found a home for the huge, honkin' Queen Palms that graced the front of my "parking cutout" and drank more than a school of [insert fave nationality] fishies combined. Here they were on the eve. Those are normal size chairs and a normal size car . . . .

Livistona benthamii
by Keith N Tampa (ex SoJax)- 20 replies

Last weekend I purchased a Livistona benthamii from fellow palm enthuiast (and board poster) Nature Girl. I'm not going to plant it in the ground until the threat of frost passes next spring, but I've little experience with this species. I know it's from Tropical Northern Australia, but Riffle and Craft report it good in zones 9-11, and Ed Brown III reported its good to about 20F (-6C), or a degree or two colder. Merrill Wilcox reported that it eventually failed in Gainesville, FL. Can others expound on their experiences? Whose had one long-term? What kind of winter weather has it endured? I'm on seasonally swampy ground which should be to it's liking but I'm tryi…

Nice Old Sabal Causiarium
by pg6922- 5 replies
We have been demoing lots of old condemned houses in the old parts of North Fort Myers,Fl and have been finding some nice palms. We are not removing any vegetation, only the structures. Anyways, I'm assuming its a S.Causiarum because of the massive smooth trunk and no skirt. It has to be 40 plus years old. Its nice to see such a nice specimen. It is surrounded by some very old Kapok trees that were probably planted at the same time. PG

I got my issue yesterday and WOW. I saw the Dypsis makirae on the back cover and said, "Don't know what it is but I want one." Ditto the new Syagrus evansiana from Brazil, to go with the S. duarti I've been wanting. And back to Makira, Madascar for Dypsis thiryana, D. coursii, ankirindro, ankirindro, mocquerysiana, etc. What a great issue! Has anyone else received theirs yet?

Palm garden
by Tyrone- 24 replies

Here are some before and after shots of a job I did for a client over the last couple of weekends. They had a pokey little courtyard with a black wattle tree growing on the boundary and some ground which the dog kept on digging up. They wanted a tropical garden, so that's what I did for them. There's also a nice new Chambeyronia leaf in these pics. I timed it well I think.

30 year old Chamaedorea elegans houseplant
by Eric in Orlando- 4 replies

I visited my grandmother in Illinois last week. She has a potted Chamaedorea elegans on her porch that is nearly 30 years old and over 6ft tall. She brings it inside during the winter. We brought this to her from Florida, it was one of those tiny palm-in-a-box plants tourists take home. I've watched grow all these years.

Seed germination at last
by JLeVert- 3 replies

I was out checking the palms in the yard the other day and noticed that seedlings were coming up under both my Trithrinax acanthocoma and my Butia paraguayensis. They have both been dropping seeds for years and finally some have germinated. I don't know what did it except that the sprinkling system was broken on that side of the yard and then we started having a lot of rain. Could it be the wet/dry treatment? I also mulched over the seeds with pinestraw in the spring. I'm excited.

Cocos nucifera

We went to the local flea market on Saturday and came across this dandy coconut palm seedling. While I love and prefer tall coconuts, they are LY magnets here. But this Malayan gold dwarf (correct me if I am wrong) really caught my eye. The seed was enormous and filled the 7g pot. The seller swore the seedling palm is only 4 months old (is that just hype or can a coconut grow that fast?). The thing, sans pot, must be 4 feet tall. Anyway, I bought it, as I still don't have a Cocos. I planted it just across the property line on the vacant property next door. I figure it someone ever builds on it he will keep this palm as part of his landscaping. Anyway, I took photos. …

I had a great time at the PSSC meeting in Altadena. It was a beautiful, very warm day. I attended the board meeting, made some new friends and saw many people from the So-Cal chapter I already knew, toured the garden, ate some great food and helped with the Auction. In between it all I got a few photos. So here they are- Another shot of the front of the House, Caryotas, Cocothrinax barbadensis

I've cleared out an area under my large H K Orchid tree. Its quite shady and close to the house so it should be protected from the cold weather and Santa Ana winds we get here in south Orange County. I've already planted Chamaedorea ernnesti-augustii and C. geonomiforma and have room for a few more. Thanks!
