Foxtails
by Tyrone- 28 replies
- 2.8k views
I've got to go out and diagnose some sad foxtail palms today in a beach side property south of Perth, in Port Kennedy. The soils there are beach sand with the odd lump of limestone and pH's ranging from 8-10. How tolerant of high pH are foxtails. This guy has a row of 4 and by the sounds of it is doing everything correctly, but one is stunted and pencilling down while the ones next to it appear fine according to him. My soils are 6.5pH so I can't take any info from my own experience. What do you guys reckon, especially those on limey sand in South Florida. Is high pH and issue with Foxtails? Best regards Tyrone

Foxy Lady experts - please give your opinion
by Jeff in St Pete- 31 replies

I've never grown a Foxy Lady before and I'm not sure what they look like at this stage. Does this look like one? I bought it about two years ago as a two leaf seedling. The first year it was very slow and barely grew. The second year it exploded in growth. What do you think? Thanks in advance for any help!

Herbacide that wont harm palms?
by PalmGuyWC- 12 replies
- 1.3k views
I have a couple of Chamaerops var Cerifera that are very bushey and thorney that have grasses that have grown up around them and in them. (and some other palms too). It would be impossible to pull the grass away from them without ripping up my hands and arms, even with gloves and it would be to tedious anyway. Does anyone know of a herbacide that would kill grasses and not harm the palms? I think Roundup would be much to riskey. Dick

The L.muelleri is one of my favorite Livistonas, but is seldom seen or spoken of. Is this Livistona hard to find or to common? Do people not like the look of the palm? Why...?

I'm referring to the tiny fungus gnats that sometimes get into potting soil, as must have happened in my case. Short of repotting (which I would much rather not do because of the pot size), what is the best route for eradicating these little buggers?

Bismarcks

Hey everyone Im new to Palm talk and really palms in general however Ive worked with plants my whole life. I have an extra shadehouse that I'd like to turn into a palm field and I couldnt think of a better palm to start than the bismack. I've been reading about their germination and I'm kind of getting mixed signals on the length of time and how to do it the best. So if anyone could give me a step by step process with an amount of time before seeing each result that would be great. Pictures would be even better. Thanks Tyler

african oil palm frond
by Walt- 1 follower

I'm sure many of us here that live in areas that have hard frosts and freezes have seen this phenomena many times, where one or two fronds of a palm are undamaged, yet all the rest are fried from the freeze/frost. This was the case this past January with my African oil palm, where one frond was totally unhurt by the freeze/frost, when my open yard temperature dropped into the high 20s F for several nights. I didn't protect this palm, and all fronds basically had the same exposure. In fact, the pristine frond is actually on the N.W. side of the palm.

Shopping palms against the winter blues
by Z4Devil- 20 replies

Hi, folkz - to shorten it: I am fed up to the back teeth, sorry. For 12 weeks we have masses of snow, for 14 coldness. The total horror. Although I have no palms outdoor, my indoor ladies show me that it is enough. I am fighting at all front lines ... And what is better than shopping palms now and wait with shipment until temperatures allow it? Nothing, absolutely. Dan (US), Jeff (Honolulu), Alain (France) and Hans-Guenther (Germany) are waiting in the starting blocks to ship some beauties to Verena in Germany. Interested in what I have bought? Here we go: 10 x Acanthophonix rubra (seedlings, from France) 10 x Acanthophonix sp. rousselii (seedlings, from…

Dividing Chamaedorea stolonifera
by Mark Wuschke- 9 replies
- 1.2k views
I've had a couple of Cham stolonifera's in containers for a few years, and there are half a dozen plantlets hanging off the main plant, with several leaves on each. The stolons are starting to branch profusely too. All of this is above soil level. With the pots getting a bit crowded, I'd like to split it up. Is it a simple case of cutting the rope-like stolon somewhere, and sticking it into a pot with regular potting mix? Having no roots, I wonder whether the plantlets will survive. Thx for any tips.

I found what I believe is a Cocothrinax argentata at a small older local nursery that I frequent. (I've bought probably everything of interest he had.) I was amazed at the handy pot work. The soil top was crusted with salt from fert. I'm gonna free it from it's prison soon. How long do you think it took to get this size? Randy
