Queen palm blew down
by Buttecreekwoody- 1 follower

One of my Queen Anne palms blew over in a recent wind event in Norcal. This was my smallest in the ground at about a foot diameter and 8 feet talk planted in the ground on my lawn area. I have it roped up against two other palms for now. how do I keep the tree propped until it grows strong enough to survive? I’m thinking about building a couple A frames around it. Should I pack some soil in around the exposed roots? Wrap Jute?

Wodyetia advice

I picked up a few (5) Wodyetia Bifurcara palms from a local palm grower last year just before winter. I have 3 , 5 gal. And 2 , 3gal. They were not in the best of shape , two of them looked ok and the other three are marginal. None have died over the winter. They are still in their pots on the southwest side of my house under some nice canopy with dappled sunlight all day . I think the two will be good to plant soon as they are showing growth . I spear marked them when I brought them home. I have had two previous failures over the last 27 years that I lived here and still not sure what caused it. Two blocks from me a friend planted two and one survived, I am told they are…

Brahea Palm; Fronds Seem to Die too Soon
by biznagita- 1 follower

I'm seeking professional input as to whether or not there is something wrong with some of my Brahea palms. The issue is, the lower fronds seem to die too soon. In the attached picture of the palm, the fronds at the lower part of the plant are starting to die. There is a picture of one of the fronds. I see other Brahea palms, and the fronds don't seem to die so soon. Thank you, Steve Mott

Clean slate in Leucadia

A couple years ago I posted a thread on here (which I can no longer find) about wanting to remove about 20 stumps from the north side of the front yard to create a new planter. Well I finally got around to it and since then I’ve been bringing in soil to level out the planter and prepare it for a new row of palms. Since I had already collected and acclimated a good number of palms in the meantime, once the planter was ready to go it was hard to hold myself back, so needless to say this all came together pretty quick. Here’s some photos of the progress as well as how it looks today. There’s room for about 2 more palms to complete the row so it’s almost done.

I was gifted some red Areca vestria seeds so the best thing to do was germinate them asap this batch I had a very poor germination rate the seeds were fresh I helped pick the seeds so no faults in fresh quality seeds I did the same germination technique as the last batch of red Arecas i received with 50 percent success this time I only managed around 20 percent success rate I was told they have a low germination rate and this batch of seeds was certainly that still a gift of seeds is win in any situation no matter how low the germination rate

Dumb Soil Question
by JohnAndSancho- 5 replies

Just curious here. A few months ago, I bought a couple bags of Miracle Gro palm/cactus soil because it was cheap and available locally. I've used it in the past, and it wasn't great, but it seems like it's gotten way way way worse. I planted some seedlings in cups that had more holes than OJ's alibi by the time I was done and it still takes forever and me squeezing the cup to get it to drain. I've replaced it, but still have a bag and a half of the stuff and I hate to waste anything. I also bought some more Repti Bark to fill a Chewy order to get the free shipping. Anyway yes, perlite or pumice or turface would be ideal but will bark aid in drainage in crap soil?

verschaffeltia splendida disease or nutrient deficiency?
by Sandbarhopping- 0 replies

Hello palm lovers, please help me save this beauty. I've had it for a few years and it always had little random brown spots on it's leaves but now they've suddenly gotten damaged very quickly. It sits alongside 4 other exotic palms in the corner of my pool patio in Miami and the other 4 palms don't show any problems with their leaves. The newest leaf looks great, the second one has some brown spots starting, and the next 3 leaves are riddled with the brown damage. Would very much appreciate any advice. Thank you, Susan

Butia capitata
by Tyrone- 28 replies

I have a Butia that's been in the ground many years at my place, the trouble is, it's a fullsun palm and my rainforest has grown up around it. It's now sad and gangly looking, and isn't going to last for much longer in the dark. My thoughts are to dig it up and put it in the trailer and take it down to my mother-in-laws place along the south coast and put it into a fullsun position down there. It should adjust to fullsun really quickly if it's transplantable. Having never done a Butia before I have no experience to call on. So what do you think-do Butia's transplant OK? Best regards Tyrone

Bismark trees not happy, need help
by Mark S.- 2 followers

I have three Bismarks in my yard (I live in Phoenix, AZ). Occasionally each one will kick out a dead frond even though the petiole keeps growing. Each year it seems to get progressively worse. Now, for the first time, one of them is kicking out two dead ones at the same time. Any ideas or diagnosis would be appreciated.

Planting day

I bought this Chamaedorea plumosa in September last year as a 27 cm squirt from Happypalms. (thanks possum) It just rocketed upwards and outwards and now it's actually 50cms taller than the C plumosa I planted nearly 3 years ago. I was going to repot it again but after 3 days of solid rain, I knew digging would be a minimal effort, so dug I did and here he is in his permanent spot and I think the samurai will appreciate the shade too. Peachy

This little beastie had bifid leaves and was 30 cms high. It didn't take it's first winter well and looked like it was about to croak. Come the spring the new spears came through but they opened as feather leaf type. It grew reasonably quickly over summer but when winter hit again it looked pretty ratty but not as bad as the first one. This year it has really started to take off and needed putting in a much larger pot. Now that summer is over I don't know what to expect this year from the cold. Anyway all you clever clogs out there might have an idea of what he actually is so I can treat him according. Peachy

Cutting encroaching areca palm
by adwizard- 0 replies
Hi all, I have Areca palms that are encroaching on my foxtail palm tree. I want to completely remove a big stalk at the base of the areca to allow the Foxtail to have more room to grow. Can this be done without killing the areca or the rest of the areca? I'm assuming areca palms grow several shoots (stalks) per plant. So if you cut one stalk, the others will survive. Correct?

I had a couple of macrocarpa seedlings that were not up to my standard so i thought why not plant them it takes a long time to bring a unhealthy palm back full health so why not plant them in the ground they will recover a lot faster

They are always a welcome surprise in the garden when they first catch your eye in the garden there is something about the colour red in the Australian bush it just glows against the contrasting colour of the Australian bush

Hey everyone, I've been growing Palm trees in pots in Boise, Idaho for several years now and I've been wanting to put some in the ground. I've been watching James Palms on youtube and have decided to plant a couple in the ground this summer. However, I'd rather not go to all of the lengths he goes to if I don't have to do so. I've been looking for places similar to Boise where palms do grow, the closest thing I can find is St. George, Utah. So anyone from St. George on here I'd love to hear about your experiences with palms in the winter in St. George. Comparison of Boise/St. George climate …
