   Finally got around to giving this trio of Dypsis rosea some TLC. After trimming off some old leaf sheaths and fronds, they are looking rather epic. On island, we always referred to this palm as ‘Hawaiian Punch’, for obvious reasons. The smaller of the three needed more trimming and doesn’t have much color. These are not small palms. The white 5 gal. bucket for some scale in the one photo is between the two trunks. Tim

   Borassus flabellifer in Australia?

   Hi everyone! I'm new to the palm world but I've been trying to find out if the Borassus flabellifer grew in Australia and to my surprise, there seems to be a few specimens up north. Would anyone know where I could source some seeds of this plant in Brisbane or do you think the botanical gardens in Darwin or somewhere could possibly ship some down for me if I paid them?    I was gifted these seeds by a ips member and had a good germination rate using bottom heating 30 degrees Celsius an ess6 palm to germinate and grow one of the better looking dypsis varieties

   Well I am prepared for my annual battle with the dreaded killer of small palms, Strategus Aloeus, the ox beetle. If you have seen little perfectly round burrows about the size of a quarter within 12 inches of a palm less than 36 inches high, and then the palm died, this was done by Strategus. Last year I tried Spectracide (Triazicide) as prophylaxis against attacks. The results were multiple burrows on 5 palms out of about 60 palms. 3 of the attacked palms were protected by a rock barrier I installed when planting them (see some of my earlier post regarding this). None of those burrows were successful for the beetle. I was able to catch one in the act and kill him. …

    Well it’s now been 4 years since I’ve planted out my new garden. Many palms are now photo-worthy, so I thought it is time to create a topic to document the growth. Firstly, a bit of an introduction to Melbourne’s climate: We have an odd temperate climate full of contradictions; we have the least sunshine hours of any Australian capital city, yet our summer sun can be brutal on a hot day. We have the highest recorded temperature 46.4C/115.5F (even hotter at my location nearly 20km south east of the city centre) of any Australian capital yet also the lowest (-2.8C/27F).     I recently was lucky enough to come across an advanced pinnatifrons that was grown with love and care i thought I know the exact spot for it to go in my garden where it will been seen often and remembered as to the day I acquired this lovely little palm note the still frame on bottom left providing some protection for my pittipi palm from falling palm leafs

    Losing My New Florida Foxtail...HELP NEEDED

    Hello, I purchased and planted a 30-gal potted single Foxtail Palm in October 2023. Located in Manatee County, Fl. Palm was about 8-feet and healthy (dark green fronds) at time of planting. Planted in good sandy soil, direct sunlight, with base of roots exposed as recommended. Added some 8-2-2 Sunniland Palm fertilizer in the hold and blended some potting soil in the native soil. Installed weed barrier and lava rock above. Watering is by irrigation 3x week (Tues, Thurs, Sat for 25 min per day). Sprinklers do reach the base of the palm. Unsure about water quality, it is a reclaimed source, hard w/ calcium hardness but I don't know much else besides that. …

    Attalea root system

    I just planted this attalea cohune today it's my first palm with a heel. When I planted it the root ball fell apart I saw the root system was dark and the roots looked unhealthy. Alot of them were black and squishy and broke with ease. Part of the heel is dead too is this normal will the palm replace those roots easily what can be done to help it along the growth seems slow for the few weeks I had it in a pot it any and now I know why the roots were in terrible condition. The heel is still above ground I knew to keep it like that here are some pics of the heel and palm.

    Germinating is a fun hobby you always have something starting to appear if I have ten or twenty seeds of certain varieties i usually pot them up as soon as the new leaf or shoot appears picking them out as they appear so I end up with a mixed variety of seedlings where labeling them is important I recently got it wrong with what I thought was attalea cohune turning out be astrocaryum allatum now looking at the names together I can see how that happened the first and last names switching the brain around so thank you idontknowwhatnametouse without your correct identification I would have known no different thinking they where cohune palms

    A new chamaedorea to be planted in my garden the linearis being a new one recently collected there are so many chamaedorea varieties it’s easy to get side tracked with so many available the species does well in my garden with good seed production of all the varieties I have to the point they are a weed but a easily controlled a group planting in a shady place in the garden under irrigation once again for future seed production
