Having trouble deciding which would be best for the area. I'm in 9b Northern California, the area gets full up until 2 or 3pm. Clay soil, about 7ft away from a pool. I have Kings but the are pretty sheltered from our hot summer sun. Thanks.

Adopted palm parent looking for help in San Diego County

Hello, I am new member of this forum. Please forgive any etiquette or traditions that I am unknowingly missing. I am desperate for help. We purchased an abandoned property with an overgrown yard and a gorgeous Canary Island Date Palm. It was trimmed by a reputable tree trimmer in September. Over the course of the last two to three weeks, the entire crown fell off. Ignorant until I searched the web, I believe this is the murderous weevil. I am looking for any type of professional assistance/ service to try to save the tree if possible, and give me a diagnosis. If not salvagable, I am looking for a reputable company to responsibly do what has to be done with this massiv…

Planting time again this time my polyandrococos caudescens growing in a 200mm container the amendments to the soil has been done the usual irrigation treatment and placed in prime viewing position in the garden another 5 years and some loving gardening techniques should see the garden looking a little bit better with the silver underside of the leaves combined with the visual pattern on the new spear will certainly make for a conversation piece

I’ve grown a fair amount of fruit trees but Euterpe Edulis is the first palm I’ve tried growing. I tried a year ago at starting one of these but I put it in a spot that was try much full sun and it died pretty quickly. In January I planted another young Euterpe Edulis palm and the leaves are starting to brown, see attached image. Is this likely an artifact of the cool/dry season? What else might cause this? What is a typical routine for planting and caring for a young palm of this species so I might do better moving forward?

We have just made PDFs of the Palms of New Guinea book freely available for download! We hope that this makes it even more available to the widest audience. Of course, we still encourage you to buy a hard copy - but the electronic version allows everyone to use it in different ways. We've made two version available - one low resolution and one high resolution. The low res one works really well on a phone. I hope you enjoy it! https://doi.org/10.34885/qepn-3c65

Clean slate in Leucadia

A couple years ago I posted a thread on here (which I can no longer find) about wanting to remove about 20 stumps from the north side of the front yard to create a new planter. Well I finally got around to it and since then I’ve been bringing in soil to level out the planter and prepare it for a new row of palms. Since I had already collected and acclimated a good number of palms in the meantime, once the planter was ready to go it was hard to hold myself back, so needless to say this all came together pretty quick. Here’s some photos of the progress as well as how it looks today. There’s room for about 2 more palms to complete the row so it’s almost done.

The Azores

Can a Coconut Palm survive and or flourish in the Azores?I have started a collaboration with Michael Ferreira (Palm Guy) of Bermuda to answer this question.Palm Guy has recently posted an incredible group of photographs in the Travel Log section of this Board showing numerous Tropical specimens. We have identified Ponta Delgado,Azores as a likely candidate for this endeavor. The Azores is a group of Islands ranging from latitude of 37 to 39 degrees North.Ponta Delgado is located at 37.7 North. If established, this would constitute the furthest Coconut Palm on Earth from the Equator. Several major factors give reason for optimism. The first is the Azores location in thos…

Are the Azores right for coconuts?

Hello all. The question remains unanswered, but we're getting closer. These two have been with me since last May, always outdoors, protected only from a couple of major wind and rain storms in December (brought indoors). They like the white washed south facing wall. While the little guy on the right is struggling and possibly on its way out, the one on the left is doing well. The winter has actually been cooler than normal, but only slightly, with the Jan monthly average at 59. Feb looks about the same. They are Dutch greenhouse specimens, so I had a tough task keeping them alive from the beginning. If either one makes it they are going on the ground in May…

Clinostigma question
by Kaname-kun- 2 replies
I planted this Clinostigma samoense one or two years ago that had this to me strange appearance at the base. I assume it had been potted too long in too small a pot at the nursery? Anyway, there is a smaller trunk beneath a larger trunk. It's hard to see in the photo, but some adventitious roots are beginning to emerge at ground level. It is very healthy and has grown considerably since planting in the ground. Is it OK as is, or should I heap more soil up to the new larger trunk? I have other Clinostigmas I have grown from seedlings and planted out when they hit five feet or so, and none of them show this feature.

sabal causiarum shriveling up

I posted this in potted palms, but I'm going to try again here because it's an emergency, and I don't know what to do next. I let it sit in water for 30 minutes or so the other day, and it just didn't bounce back, but luckily my other one did. This one isn't bouncing back, and it's starting to fade in color. I'm so worried about it. I don't know if it's ready to be planted out because they both have roots coming out of the bottoms and have been in these bags for 2 years now, I think. I was going to plant them anyway this year, but I don't know if I should just plant it out if that would help or not.

The first time I saw it I thought it was a phoenix. But when I looked closer, it appeared that I wasn't sure. It was found that the branches did not have sharp thorns like the phoenix pusilla. So I'm not sure what kind of palm it is. If anyone knows about the problem, please specify. Thank you.

What do I do now?
by Than- 5 replies

I planted these seeds of various species few weeks back. I put the plastic cups in bleach and the medium in the oven as always.. yet now some of them are covered in these white fungi. I tried a fungicide but didn't do anything. The cups have been covered with plastic film and have been placed on heat mats. Are the seeds damaged? Should I remove, sterilize and repot in new medium? If a seed sprouted, would these fungi damage the seedling?

Today wandering the garden as I often do while taking a break from work I noticed that my Beccariophoenix madagascariensis seems to be starting to put on a little size. I can’t remember exactly when I planted it. It’s been about 6 years I would guess. It was a small 5 gallon. Over those years it has consistently put out new leafs, but it never really seemed to get too much bigger. While still considered small, it seems to finally be putting on some size. 5 gallon bucket in 2nd pic for scale. So what palm in your garden caught your eye today? It doesn’t have to be your favorite, just something that stuck out to you today.
