This palm germinated for Arden in Feb 2011, so its 5 n half yrs since germination, and thats pretty much its size 5ft 5", so V fast growers in the right conditions they seem to love the Sub tropical climate here, the pic of me holding it is in May 2012. I try and replicate their environment the best I can, thats why you see the mossy bush rocks. "Please" show yours , and thanks Arden for selling me 2 a few yrs ago Pete

First time my T. Fortunei has flowered. I believe it's male. Can the flowers be cut off at some point? If so, what's the best way to prevent harm to the tree?

King palms scorched by the sun??
by Sandy Loam- 2 followers

Two weeks ago. I planted several archontophoenix cunninghamiana/alexandrae out in full sun. Now they all look like they have been scorched by the sun. Is this sun intolerance or is it that I have not been watering them enough? My soil is sandy and it has has not rained at all. I have watered then a bit (not a lot) almost every other day, but I don't want them to die if they can't handle full sun anyways. Are these Archie palms for shade only? If I let them tough it out in the sun for the next couple or years, will they eventually become acclimatized...... Or die instead? PS. They are juvenile, each about five feet tall with roughly 6-8 inches o…

Palm ID's

I have collected lots of unusual stuff from Jeff Marcus. Many times by the time they are big enough to go in the ground the tags have lost their name. I'd enjoy knowing what some of these sweet little ones are. Palms 2, 3 and 4 seem to be clumpers, 1 is solitary .

Geonoma undata leaves become perforated
by Foggy Paul- 1 follower

Hi all. I know this species is notoriously difficult, but I'm in a climate where it should be reasonably happy--cool summers, no frost, plenty of fog and moisture. Our baby Geonoma continues to grow (slowly), but eventually each leaf develops perforations that really detract from the appearance. I have looked closely many times and found no evidence of mites or anything else that would seem to cause it. Any ideas? Or is this just a hazard of growing G. undata?

Phoenix canariensis sex type?

Hi I'm new to the forum. I was just wondering if canary island date palms are either male or female like other date palm varieties? I recently harvested some seeds from three canary island date palms but all three had dates on them. I was wondering how they might have dates if there were no males in the immediate area? Also I have never seen offshoots from canary island date palms so I was wondering if there is a difference between CID's and regular date palm varieties in the way the reproduce? Any information would be greatly appreciated.

Are there different types of Queen Palms?
by Hamandah- 1 follower

2 of our neighbors have queen palms. But some of them look so much wider and longer, pretty fronds vs others that have shorter, straight up fronds. From what they both told me they are all Queens. Can there just be a big difference within Queens or are there different kinds? I love the longer more luscious, longer fronds look!

Mr. Petty comes to Leucadia
by Billy- 2 replies

Darold Petty was kind enough to come visit me yesterday at our home in Leucadia. We enjoyed the sunshine and sipped on some cold IPA from a San Diego microbrewery while wandering around the yard looking at palms and talking story. It was a great visit and a pleasure meeting him. Perhaps the most exciting part for me was unpacking the Dypsis baronii “black stem” that Darold brought down for me. He did an amazing job of packaging the palm too. Absolutely pro. After touring the yard Darold headed out and I immediately went to a nearby nursery to grab a bag of soil so I could upsize the palm. Here’s a few photos.

Edit: for some reason, all my photos (other than Grafton hahaha) are uploading as black boxes via my iPhone….. please hold as I work to address. Hey guys! It’s been a while! Previously I’d only ever been able to have potted palms, but two years ago I (finally!) moved into a house and was able to start planting. A few of what are pictured below went into the ground the first chance I got, but I’ve added a lot this year and I’m feeling pretty good about the progress. It needs some more work, and many filler plants need to be added, but I’m really liking the progress. I’m considered zone 10a since the USDA zone update, but I’m less than 3 miles from zone 9b. Many of t…

Does anyone have an archontophoenix cunninghamiana (the "piccabeen palm") in Florida 9b/10a?

I feel like I hardly ever see any pics or posts about these in Florida. Do they not grow well in this climate? I know they do well in CA. They're supposed to be hardier than foxtails, so I was thinking of trying some in my 9b climate. But if they will just look stressed then maybe not.

Can Someone Help Me Identify This Palm

This is a palm at the local botanical gardens in Gainesville, Fl. It is not labeled and in all my years here I’ve never been able to identify exactly what it is. It definitely looks like a Sabal but I have no idea what variety. The frond structure is so unique. Any input would be greatly appreciated.

Planting my parents backyard 1 2

Hello everyone, I've been looking around the forum and enjoying everyone's garden so I figured it was about time to post up my own even if it is only months old and pales in comparison to most here! We are located in San Diego about 8 miles up the coast on top of a hill so freezing temps are rare and with clay soil, hopefully it turns out to be a good spot for growing my garden. All of the palm people that I have met have been more than generous with their time, knowledge, and plants so thanks to everyone for that! I do not yet have any good pictures of my own garden but here are some palm related pictures to introduce myself...

I’ve been looking on here so much my head is spinning! We just redid our backyard but the last thing we need to do how is to landscape and I am struggling! trying to incorporate a tropical feel with the landscape including some smaller to medium palms that can withstand the Sacramento heat and weather. Also the cold! this is our yard. Ive been trying to find a variety of palms that aren’t going to go tall like queens but more of a smaller to medium look maybe? I’m new to learning all of this though so it’s a bit overwhelming trying to figure it out. And our landscaper isn’t a “palm” guy so it’s up to me to figure it out. some I’ve l…

What are the chances

So I stopped by Jimbos Nursery this morning to pick up some bromelieads (which they specialize in) to fill in some gaps in a planter. Anytime I go there you never know what you might find. They usually order a couple loads from some nurseries in Florida every growing season. So I was snowing around one of there shade houses when I saw these bad boys haha If anyone goes to pick up one of these zone pushers you gotta let me know. Only time I have ever seen a Cyrtostachys Renda for sale was in Maui 🤯The 2nd palm was a 25g Licuala Grandis grown to perfection which i never knew was so armed as all the ones i have killed were always small. There was a couple other zone pushers …

Butia hybrids

After discovering a nice looking and mature Butia not far from me, I collected a pile of previous seasons seed off the ground and have had good success with germination. Re -visiting the tree recently to check for fruit, it has an abundant crop with some almost ripe and getting close to 40mm in across which I think are large for this one. In this small town there where the usual suspects for WA, Phoenix canariensis, Washingtonia robusta, Howea forsteriana, Archintopheonix Cunningham I and the Syagrus romanzofiana. This has me wondering as to the chances or likelihood of the seed I’m collecting being incidental hybrids with Syagrus so I thought to ask here if anyone with …
