Is my mule palm dying?
by Klmoon- 1 follower

Hello everyone, I live in Texas (Houston area) I had a couple fan palms die after the 2021 freeze. I had those removed and two mule palms placed last July. The mule palm on the left wasn’t thriving so the company replaced it in October. (So, the palm on left has been in the ground for 6 months and the one in the right has been in ground for 9 months.) we had another freeze in January but I made sure the trees were wrapped. I might be paranoid but I am concerned with the look of them. Any feedback is very appreciated!

Hydriastele benguinii "Obi Island" form seeds
by Kaname-kun- 1 reply

Do these Hydriastele benguini "Obi Island" form seeds need to be cleaned before being sprouted? Can I just plant them uncleaned directly into community pots? First time with such small seeds for me. . . .

For some reason this came up in my youtube feed. Do these provide a cool effect or just tacky fakes? If you could afford a 20M place in this location could you not have real, well maintained Washingtonia and just replace them when 5-10 year freezes take them out?

Dumb Germination Questions 1 2
by JohnAndSancho- 41 replies

I've had some seeds (bottle palm and Pinanga Coronata) germinating in community pots on a heating pad since 10/15 and they've done nothing. I'm keeping them moist and misting regularly. They're just planted in crap potting soil because it's what I had - since it's been 2 months with no germination, can I put them in some coco peat in baggies? Also, I had some Chamaedorea Microspadix soaking before cleaning and I guess I forgot about them - they've been in water for a week and uh... This water stinks. I soaked them in H2O2 and cleaned them off today. Should we be cool to throw them in a community pot? I do have more peroxide and copper fungicide if necessary.

Lakeside Palmetum, Oakland 1 2

We were in the San Francisco Bay area over Christmas and stopped by the Lakeside Palmetum on Lake Merritt in Oakland. We had never known of its existence until we joined the Palm Talk Forum and saw it mentioned several times. The palm collection was terrific, good collection of cool weather palms. Unfortunately the garden was in pretty bad shape when we were there, as recent maintenance and upkeep had been minimal. Most of the palms had skirts of dead fronds and the undergrowth was crowded and weedy. To make matters worse, there were few ID tags in the Palmetum. In general, the Oakland Botanical Garden (inside of which the Palmetum is located) didn’t look that w…

A pic of a neighbor’s lipstick palms, and pics of my little yard, including the lipstick palm that’s finally starting to take off after barely growing for 3 years, and our neighborhood beach with a chunk of tree in the water from December’s massive floods. We’re in Kewarra Beach, which is just north of Cairns

Hole In Sylvester Date Palm?
by Pee Dee Palms- 2 followers

I noticed this almost perfectly round hole on the side of my Sylvester Date Palm, and I'm wondering if I should be concerned. The hole isn't massive, probably about an inch or so deep. The palm has some other "wounds" on it for whatever reason. The trunk has been slightly squishy for several months, but otherwise appears very healthy. I got the palm when it was extremely sickly, and it has been making a very nice recovery since getting it planted. Only thing is this weird, round hole and the other scars on it. Just wondering what this might be and how I could prevent it.

Chamaedorea radicalis (tree form) cold damage

I do need some important advice about these fairly newly planted trees. Both are only about 3 1/2 feet tall and both have suffered cold damage. I have checked the very bottom and they are still green, but seem dead after about 1/2" from the bottom. Any advice concerning cutting the top or to continue leaving these palms with the dead stem and the dead leaves. Would greatly appreciate if anyone has experience with this type of palm. Thank you, Carol

Ventnor Botanic Garden & Isle of Wight (2023)
by UK_Palms- 15 replies

Last week I was able to visit the impressive Botanic Garden in Ventnor on two separate days. It is located on the south coast of the Isle of Wight, which is on the south coast of England. This is probably one of the best exotic gardens in the world, given its northern location (50N). Starting with some of the Phoenix Canariensis… Beahea Edulis Brahea Armata Washingtonia stand - likely one of the most impressive in the world given the distance from equator/latitude (50N).

Pretty new to the community and learning. Picked up two coccothrinax argentatas and recently planted them. They're 7gal size and looked like this when purchased. Recently reading up on lethal bronzing, it had me worried that these are symptoms, possible leaf bronzing and necrosis inflorescent. Could this possibly just be a potassium deficiency rather? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I am planning on planting a Pindo Palm right now it was about 18-24” of trunk and is about 5-6 ft in diameter including fronds and about 4-4 1/2 feet tall not including the pot. (Photo is from December and has more fronds now). The options are a circle platform about 4-5’ in diameter in the open and a space that is 6’ by 7’ (NEAR A FENCE!!!). What would be the best option for long-term development?
