Palms in Cyprus

Discuss palm trees here in Cyprus. Increasing variety is now available in local nurseries, such as Royals, Kings, Triangles, and to a lesser extent, foxtails. Never seen cocos yet, but they seem to be becoming more common in local nurseries where i believe I saw them near Timi, but I will stop to confirm if my eyes did not deceive me. Some pics around Paphos area

Kentia Palm soil height help

Hi everyone, new here so sorry if this is in the wrong section. four months (October here in syd, aus) ago I transplanted a mature kentia palm (about 2m of clear trunk). It lost a couple of fronds in the wind and it has paused the new fronds it was pushing out when it went in. I’m guessing it’s still putting energy into roots and staying alive after a transplant as it’s made no change all summer and it’s only got one good frond. today I noticed that while gardening around it a few months ago I’ve inadvertently buried the trunk in another 5cm or so of soil (2inches). when I went to clear it I noticed it’s full of small, fine roots t…

I can’t find my acquisition photo but in Nov 2020 I bought an Areca catechu in a small pot, it was maybe 2’ tall, here it is in June 2021 and then today, it has somewhat outgrown the adjacent red Ti plant. Pretty decent growth rate.

The palm and cycad society of Australia annual plant sale had some rare and common varieties for sale well worth a visit for any collector of rare plants the show was held in the grounds of mount cootha botanical gardens in Brisbane they had some wonderful palms on display along with cycads as usual you have to be first in the door to get the super rare palms which would have sold out real fast as they say first in best dressed so the early bird gets the worm next time perhaps the prices reflected the market prices for rare palms I believe the growers of rare palms deserve what ever price they put on there plants as a grower myself I fully understand what goes into obtain…

Hi I recently got a canary palm installed and noticed these dark spots on a lot of the cut portions. Most of the spots were soft in the outside area. Anyone know what this is? I also noticed a very large amount of ants living around the base of the tree.

Digging Rhopie babies in California
by DoomsDave- 12 replies

Howdyall: I've got a fellow palm nut nearby that has a Rhopie sapida that dropped seeds and they sprouted and the babies are about 8" - 12" (20 - 30 cm) tall, going pinnate. He wants to clear the space and invited me to come dig them out. Anyone do this? Is this the best time of year? I thought it might be because my Rhopies seem to love the cool in the winter time. Or, should I wait till the weather warms later? All thoughts appreciated! And, for those who don't know, Rhopies are well worth the trouble!

Something wrong with my Areca vestiaria
by Dimimelbourne- 2 replies

I’ve had this beauty for a few years now. It’s grown a lot in my care and when it looks good, it’s stunning. I’ve managed to keep it alive indoors in Melbourne (AUS) a temperate climate, outdoors in Cairns, a tropical climate and now have it with me approx 28°S in a subtropical climate in filtered morning sun. Obviously it did the best in the tropics but got a bit crisped up on the road trip down to where I am now. The new leaf looks really pale and unwell… any thoughts as to what’s wrong with it?

Brahea dulcis, so small spines?
by Phoenikakias- 4 replies

I got a juvenile plant under this name and turned out desperately slow. Besides petioles are armed with very tiny spines, initially they were almost invisible and one could feel them only by the touch. No they are visually more perceivable and can be caught in a picture, but they are still tiny. Is that a common trait for this sp or only related to certain ecotype(s) or strains?

Germinating allagoptrea arenaria

I purchased some allagoptrea arenaria seeds from rps and so far quite successful in the germination department to import seeds it’s a long wait from source to getting them to sowing usually 8 weeks or more with customs taking there time and other times clearing them within days of landing in the country with many emails and phone calls involved in the process along with certain fees applicable but it’s all worth it when you’re seeds start germinating I used spagnum moss slightly moist bottom heating 30 degrees Celsius in two sealed plastic bag creating more heat I have used this technique before and it worked well for me

Is my mule palm dying?
by Klmoon- 1 follower

Hello everyone, I live in Texas (Houston area) I had a couple fan palms die after the 2021 freeze. I had those removed and two mule palms placed last July. The mule palm on the left wasn’t thriving so the company replaced it in October. (So, the palm on left has been in the ground for 6 months and the one in the right has been in ground for 9 months.) we had another freeze in January but I made sure the trees were wrapped. I might be paranoid but I am concerned with the look of them. Any feedback is very appreciated!

For some reason this came up in my youtube feed. Do these provide a cool effect or just tacky fakes? If you could afford a 20M place in this location could you not have real, well maintained Washingtonia and just replace them when 5-10 year freezes take them out?
